I understand the sentiment, but I don't altogether buy it. Maybe I'll have to see the community-related programming before we can argue this too thoroughly, but I find it hard to believe the heart of the matter is the Big Ten Network's burning desire to educate and inform the public about the good deeds of the Big Ten. That's a perfectly reasonable bonus, but let's be real: this is about money. An extra 1.99 for every basic cable subscriber is almost sure to add up to more than whatever share of the 4.99 sports tier they'd be getting. Call me cynical, but I'm finding it hard to believe the Big Ten Network's benevolence outweighs its desire to make a buck.

Thanks for the compliment. I didn't mean to suggest the actual days of old, or the glory days under Knight or anything like that ... I was just referring to the couple years when Davis' teams had ridiculous non-con schedules which, in my mind, set them like four or five games behind developmentally each year.

I appreciate your observation, but I think you're supporting the point I was trying to make there: Crack is far less acceptable to the average, white, midwestern IU fan than a "party" drug like ecstasy would be. I draw no such difference; to be honest, if Mackey wasn't doing crack, I don't have that much problem with him selling it. The reality for plenty of black male youth in this country is that selling drugs is literally their only option, whether for short-term or long-term financial gain. Without getting into an argument on the War on Drugs in this country (stupid, stupid, stupid), that's how I feel.

So I appreciate your comment, but I promise I wasn't trying to hold up that cultural bias. Rather, I was trying to expose it. I definitely should have been more clear.

Oh, and in terms of booing Stemler, I think it's slightly misguided. At the same time, if you're Lance -- if you're slowest, most unathletic guy on a team of inexperienced, but athletic, players -- your job is to take care of the ball, hit open shots, and play solid defense. Those aren't exactly high expectations, and if he can't do that, you can understand why fans get frustrated.

On the other hand, I can't imagine booing helps any 21-year-old's confidence. Would it help yours? There's a fine line between expressing displeasure -- totally a paying fan's right -- and making a bad situation worse.

Raising a discussion isn't classless. It's not like he's advocating booing; he's merely questioning it. If you want to express your displeasure (i.e. boo him), well, it appears you've done that in the comments. Just don't be dumb about it next time.

Right now it's a small sample size, but Armon Bassett is arguably every bit the shooter Eric Gordon is. Lots of kids at the college level can shoot, too -- not to mention the hordes of sub-Division 1 mid-major players who do nothing but shoot well -- but rare is a player like Gordon who combines that skill with an elevated level of athleticism. That's where he sets himself apart.

Fair enough. I would say (besides his range, which is silly), I'm more impressed thus far with Gordon's sheer strength and speed than I am his shooting. The shooting feels almost like a bonus. But put together ... unreal.

Basically, EJ is good at everything. We can all agree on that.

Brian, not sure. The TV folks said Crawford isn't playing thanks to an indefinite suspension for breaking a team rule. Don't know what rule, or how it was broken, but hopefully we find out sooner rather than later.

I'll be honest, that quote surprised me too. I don't mind a team that drives the lane more than it shoots outside jumpers; that team is likely to be more efficient and less drought-prone than a team of jump shooters. But I don't see how Sampson could look at Tuesday night's film and be satisfied with the team's collective offensive effort.

For anyone without the BTN, Eric Gordon suffered what looked like a back injury in the first half. He was limping around, and getting treatment on the bench. Now, in the second half, Gordon didn't return to the IU bench. Let's hope it's precautionary, and nothing serious.

Like I said in the post, I wasn't trying to diss Stemler at all, simply the media fascination that can credit him for making an obvious pass, while ignoring a considerably more difficult play by Ellis. It's been said before, but I think Lance is good for what he is, and I've learned to temper my expectations.

I guess my point is that I've yet to see anyone on this team not play hard, or not work hard, so praising Stemler for that at the exclusion of the rest of the team -- or for the example I wrote about -- just seems silly to me.

I know it's just one broadcaster and one statement, but it is a perfect example of a larger problem I think is worth looking into. I don't think this is getting out of hand; on the contrary, I think this is healthy discussion. It's good to question why we say the things we do from time to time, and why perceptions are perceptions even if they don't seem all that accurate.

The stripe out was originated by a group of students like two months ago. Their movement gained a sufficient amount of steam to the point that the other night, when a white out was announced, students started to boo. We really had nothing to do with it at all; we were just talking about it because of the conflict between students and the athletics dept. (You are right, though: We're not at all influential.)

Good call on Morgan. He's less of a "post player" than he is an interior scorer, or at least he was last year. I haven't seen him enough this year, beyond his numbers, to battle that assessment.

And Neitzel is a point guard insomuch as the Spartans use him to control the ball. Walton and Lucas bring it up the floor, but Neitzel's percentage of possession is much higher than Walton's, and slightly less than Lucas'. But yeah, I'll cop to having seen the Spartans but once this season, and that was the UCLA game. This was numbers-based, and I'll stand corrected on the Morgan stuff.

I definitely am not one of the "I deserve a good IU team" people -- I hate those people too. Their haughty sense of entitlement makes want to kick them in the balls, presuming, of course, they're male and have said balls to kick.

By "We deserve better", I was just trying to say that it's unfair to everyone involved to waste the talent on this team with sloppy defense and the other ugly stuff two nights ago. I just think it would be a shame to waste this team by being disorganized.

Also a good call. I think there is in general a portion of old school fans -- not just in the IU fan base -- who take any sort of borderline unsportsmanlike play and turn it into a sign that our society's crumbling under our feet. Thankfully, I haven't heard much of that yet, but it always feel just around the corner.

Oh, and Maslow's: I haven't heard that since the one Psych class I was forced to take freshman year. Well done.

Great stuff. I was, actually, a little too young for that team, though thanks to the magic of Big Ten Network I've been able to see at least one of their games from that season. You're right: That was an offensively dominant team.

The feeling was great last night, wasn't it? I felt like a Memphis fan; strategy was so secondary to the talent gap, you didn't even have to stress over high screens or ball movement on offense. It was a breath of fresh air.

We feel your pain. We're all pretty busy peeps, but we're working on getting more content up when possible.

One of the recurring themes on here seems to be the ability to post on whatever you want. I'll add that until we address this, feel free to comment on whatever you want under whatever thread. This goes especially for the end of the day when things have basically been discussed to their logical conclusion. So long as your announce your attentions, and are keeping things relatively within reason, I don't see why posting a threadjack here and there for the sake of conversation is a problem.

After I heard this, I was thinking the same thing. (Though, at this point, I might struggle to hoist 185, which is pathetic.) Anyway, you also have to consider his wingspan. It's way, way harder for a guy with a 7'5 span to lift than it is for someone with more proportional arms, so all told, Durant's probably stronger than his bench shows.

Still, "I can lift more than an NBA player" sure has an nice ring to it.

LB, you know I luv ya, but I think it's a little early to declare Noah's pro career a failure. Oh, and his response ("It doesn't make a difference") was him talking about his feelings, and that of course he doesn't like being benched by his teammates, but that he has to suck it up regardless. Noah's had a rough year so far, but he's also shown flashes of brilliance. Let's not bury him just yet.
