in In HR, Don’t Say It Unless You Mean It on KnowHR Blog
#1 communication SNAFU that drives me up the wall is "we have an open door policy" when they DON'T.

I honestly think 40 hours per week is too much. Of course, it depends where you work and what you do...

Agreed! One of my least favorite phrases is "that's not my job" or "that's not in my job description". GET OVER YOURSELF PEOPLE!

Good for them for actually "looking under the hood". Prior to applying for jobs I always check out a company's website and if they are public I also check them out on Hoover's, Yahoo Finance and similar. You can learn so much about what they are NOT saying in their employment ads this way.

in Just Communicate! on KnowHR Blog
Try having a CPA as your boss. I take something complicated, put it into laymen's terms for the employees and then then he wants it switched back to legalese. UGH. I stopped showing him communications before they go out. MUHAHAHA!

in Communicate…Then Wait on KnowHR Blog
This post totally validates my PAIN!! I go through this with the president of my company all the time. He will see the initial reaction from a few whiners regarding an HR communication and totally panic. I have to calm him down and convince him to wait it out a bit. It takes a few days for him to figure out the sky isn't falling and most employees are on board with the announcement. I think this is why he says to me "you're a pain in the @ss, but I need you". I'd like to think he really means HR can be a pain, not me personally, but who knows.

Excellent post my dear Frank. And excellent points from the commenters above.
My take: subprime = slime. I hope they ALL rot.

I LOVE IT when random non-HR people try to tell me what is and isn't legal in employment. I could write a book on this very topic.
That being said, I have met way too many HR professionals that have no idea what they are doing. A little bit of knowledge can be a scary thing.

in What Kind of HR Person Are You? on KnowHR Blog
Perrik has an excellent point. It is one thing for me to be a theory X HR person who believes it is HR's job to motivate employees. It is another to do what my employer expects HR to do...and it is different at every company I've worked at! It has certainly taught me flexibility.
What prepared me to be in HR? Honestly the best preparation was overhearing my mother (who worked out of our home while I was growing up) be assertive with problem clients. Her job was of a nature that she often had clients that literally needed a mother and latched onto her to fulfill that need. She was professional but never cold and able to keep good boundaries. She taught me it is ok to stand up for yourself and maintain boundaries even if that means ending an uncomfortable conversation with a client. What more, one can do this without getting huffy or shrill.
