in Ubuntu on Microsoft Virtual PC Works Like a Charm on Eddie Awad’s Blog

Oh I see; After I read my earlier post, I apologize if it came off the wrong way. I knew there had to be a reason for the test, but I wasn't seeing it. I haven't tried Vista, and not planning to in the near future.

Were the problems you read about due to Vista + VPC or VPC + Ubuntu or a combo of all 3?

in Ubuntu on Microsoft Virtual PC Works Like a Charm on Eddie Awad’s Blog

Any reason why you would believe this wouldn't work? I haven't find issues with any x86 OS on any of the virtual machine software (Virtual PC for Mac or Windows, Virtual Server, or VMWare).

in You Have Egg on Your Chin on Eddie Awad’s Blog

Well, even in the US, there are different dialects. For example, in Missouri, you will hear people say "you'ins" (pronounced you - ins) instead of "y'all".

Also, in the Boston area, you'll hear people pronounce the letter O as -ah-, like Bahsten (Boston).

in Is it true that anyone can contribute to Wikipedia? on Eddie Awad’s Blog

That's why I don't trust Wikipedia entirely. You gather a few billion (maybe million, who knows) people who claim to know things and entering data. Some of the data is accurate while some is not. It's more or less a holding cell for data on what the popular vote holds. In their own terms, you can't change things constantly, so you can have the correct facts and enter them, only to have many more people change it back to something else. I trust it as much as I do Microsoft.

in Oracle vs. PostgreSQL on Eddie Awad’s Blog

It seems every time I turn around, someone is comparing Oracle to something. Some of the comments I agree with and some seem way off:

<ol>
<li>

PostgreSQL is much more suitable for the casual database developer.
-- I'm a DBA, so I can't see the difference in programming Oracle or Postgres.

</li>
<li>

PostgreSQL has a solid set of features that includes most, if not all, of what developers would ever use.
-- Oy, just because that's all they currently use doesn't mean that's all they should use. If this were the case, then just what are Oracle Corp's (or Postgres or MS) developers working on?

</li>
</ol>

Let's all go back to flat files and skip all this complex relational stuff. :)

I'm using the same them you had:

Semiologic, 2 columns 3.2 by Denis de Bernardy

Works fine on my WP 2.0 release. Did 2.0.2 break it?

in What’s in a Label on Eddie Awad’s Blog

I'm not a developer, but the term GOTO reminds me of writing BASIC on my Commodore 64. I can't believe it still exists, besides in Windows batch files.

in SQL formatter in Oracle Raptor on Eddie Awad’s Blog

As an FYI, R3 fixed the right-click issue.

I use it as a replacement for sqlplus on my desktop, since I can manage multiple databases at once. However, if I'm changing tablespaces or anything that might damage data, I fire up sqlplus.

Just noticed that I can no longer right-click the SQL worksheet area in Raptor R2 Build 08.97. CTRL-B still works, however.

in Oracle Rootkit on Eddie Awad’s Blog

I was a security consultant prior to being a DBA.

I found that many folks tend to think of security as blocking outsiders. Yet, too many times, an internal attack causes more problems, due to lack of auditing for internal users. Further, if a company deploys a VPN with another company, you can possibly have users at another company taking stabs at your data without your knowledge.

Oh boy, what a wonderful world we live in.

in Char or Car? on Eddie Awad’s Blog

For varchar2, I pronounce it as:

var car 2

However, when saying the word "character", the char portion is pronounced "care", so I hear this too:

var care 2

in Cool Firefox extension: Foxmarks on Eddie Awad’s Blog

I'd like to find one that uses a Subversion repository. Thus, not only can I keep past revisions, but they are always accessible via a web browser as well.

I must say I'm impressed so far. Now if they would only get EM 10gR2 released.

in My favorite Firefox keyboard shortcuts on Eddie Awad’s Blog

Don't forget these:

Shift+Enter = wrap domain with www. and .net (so for awads.net, type awads and hit Shift+Enter)

Ctrl+Shift+Enter = Same as above, but uses .org instead

in Oracle Metalink Firefox search plugin on Eddie Awad’s Blog

Now that Firefox 1.5 is out and they have a new domain (http://www.mozilla.com/), do you know if these plugins are compatible with 1.5?

I'm going to test them soon, but our baby is coming, and I'm running out of time.

Ack, the grammar in the PDF is driving me crazy! One would think that they would have done a grammar check before publishing.

I assume that HTMLDB 2.1 is still beta as well as XE, since I cannot find any information about 2.1 anywhere.

Also for supported/unsupported features, here's a good list.
