Wow man that just blew my mind! I love it! I could never get it passed at our church but it's something I have the creative flexibility to do during our Youth services/activities. I love that ya'll jumped out there and tried it! Kudos and thanks for that!

Haha it's funny the difference in response people are having over this movie! Yeah, I'm definitely I'm glad I sat a bit further back than I typically do for a movie. I would imagine WHERE I sat could have made the movie worse for me.
You know we were saying the other day, it's almost like JJ Abrams saw The Blair Witch Project and was like: that's cool I bet I could do that cooler! HAHA.
I think the 'concept' of the movie was probably better than the movie itself but the concept of it is what I really love!

D@$% IT!! That CD is one of my favorites of last year and AS SOON as I heard that track (this is how nerdy I am) I brought it to my wife and was like: "this is the ULTIMATE party track! We could totally make a dance to this IT HAS MOTIONS IN THE LYRICS! LET'S DO IT!"

She thought I was very amusing that day but didn't offer any suggestions other than laughing at me trying to dance in the car. I've got to show her this! AWESOME!

...oh and the Potato Head project is a no go :( I was showing it off Sunday at church to rally support and b/w everything else coming up this season (we do Kidstuf and I do Youth and worship etc.) it's not going to happen. Hahaha

Yeah just a "little" Tomlin heavy :) My guitarist is always the first notice when I go that route as well! I absolutely LOVE Glory in the Highest though. Real singable and such a great song! I could never use it as the opener though because our congregation isn't very punctual and I'd hate to toss it away :)

Sol! Great podcast! First timer here , heard about you from our friend over at the Bald Worship Leader. I wanted to join in on the throwdown here. I agree with much of what you said about Everything Glorious. I don't have the United cd yet, but I'm downloading it from iTunes as we speak. Yeah, Tomlin is dandy and all. Live, its effortless the way he engages people and writes songs that you can sing the first time you hear him. Its so obvious though listening to his studio recordings that he is slinking up to the 'contemporary christian' model. I can't stand Arriving. What a horrible rendition of some great songs he's done live. I was also disapointed in the fact that I got both pre-releases and the 1 song they repeat and put exactly the same way on the cd is a Crowder tune!
But my overall comment is that I love the theme of Everything Glorious. From the Tomlin's set (excluding the incredible disaster that is Party!) all the way through to Crowder, God's glory is spoken of. I like that. Although, you do have me looking at the words we use. Awesome, marvelous, amazing, yeah our language is to vast to get stuck in that rut.

Stunned...speachless...uhh...I just wow. I mean when I was at LSU they used to have this group of 'evangelists' that would come down every semester and 'preach' in our Free Speach Ally. They would stand on the benches and yell out 'SINNER, WHORE, PROSTITUTE, VANDAL' things of that nature while their kids handed out tracks. THEIR KIDS, the youngest one I saw was about 6.
Anyway, one time some students from the BCM decided to 'preach back.' Oh man, I thought that was bad. Christians bashing Christians in this ugly fight of scripture and praying and condemning. That was one of the worst displays I'd seen until now.
THAT was incredible. Incredibly awful.

Memories?!?! That happened last Sunday for me!!! HAHAHAHA!
We were playing God of Wonders - capo 2 that was going to go into Indescribable in G - no capo!
And in a moment of the Spirit's sense of humor, I felt led to say something about the song and what we were going to sing about in Indescribable but I never took my capo off! It wasn't quite that bad, thankfully my electric guitarist noticed the capo and got everyone but the keyboardist!! We had this sweet ethreal patch that unfortunately sounded like he screwed up instead of me! HAHAHAHAHA. It was hilarious.

I remember seeing Bebo 'back in the day' and what struck me, besides being stuck by his talented song writing/singing/playing was his pigeon toes! The dudes toes touched together and he was standing up! Then I saw the cover of his CD a few weeks later and it's his feet touching!! Hilarious!

Oh man that's quick thinking there man! My guitar player was on the ball this week. We did:

and from here I was to move my capo to the 3rd fret to play Creed by Third Day. Instead, I move my capo to the 2nd fret. In the "30 seconds" prior to playing I get this tap on my shoulder and my bass player is pointing to my guitarist and he's holding up 3 fingers making an X and holding up 2 fingers. I look down and see my mistake and quickly fix the problem before our drummer counts us in! WHEW! That'd have been awful!

I was a late-comer to the United camp but I'm a huge fan now. Their last 2 CDs I have and love. I think it's hilarious b/c I agree that they've moved praise and worship's musical style into the mainstream music arena which is AWESOME!

And I love the live-post-production CDs the best! HAHAHA. I agree, there's just something missed when you have a worship album that's a studio mix. I remember when Passion jumped and did the studio version, I thought it was HORRIBLE! But hey Steve Fee just BROUGHT IT and it was a studio mix so I guess there's hope :)
But I prefer the "live" setting CD much better.

You know I started listening to some "live" worship CDs due to this discussion and realized that you know sometimes "live" stuff is actually distracting. Sometimes there are things that happen live that are amazing that doesn't transfer to the CD. (Party anyone??) Or like Brian's Charlie example. Matt Redman always does that for me. I love the guy live when I'm there, but on the CD sometimes it doesn't transfer.
All that to say, I'm torn now. I guess I'll have to go check out those samples!!

This is such a great question! And great comments.
We have 2 services, but we do a 'dry run' that morning as well so we play the songs 3 times on one morning. I loved the drummer's comment re: 1st - Warm Up 2nd - Real Deal Holyfield. We joke about the same thing.
I LOVE the wife comment! That's actually totally right on the money.
Our service seems a bit different since the 1st is represented by mostly people who volunteer during the 2nd service and typically are familiar with one another and comfortable so they need little if anything other than us to start playing their favorite song.
The 2nd service is mostly new-comers to the church or visitors and need more 'leading' if you will.
So both services are unique and require a different approach to them.

HOWEVER, I can't so easily say "Its not all about the songs." By the time we have a new tune in a regular rotation I've played it like a hundred times! Listening to the CD, playing it by myself, learning other musician's parts, listening to other versions, introducing it to the band, rehearsing it with the band, THEN introducing it to the congregation and so a few weeks later oftentimes that song that was once inspiring and motivating has lost some of its sheen. Sometimes its difficult.

If I may be so honest, selfishly honest at that, 1 service is really about me. Not that I've forgotten about corporate worship and who's there but its more of a time for me to really indulge myself in what the Spirit is doing and my reflection on God. The other service is one more focused on the people in the congregation. Not that I've forgotten about me but its more about them this time. I don't know if this is right or not but that's how I approach each service.

The only blog with relevant shallow church discussion! HAHAHAHA.
May I probe perhaps a further question? One of the reasons I was hired was because I was: "Under 30 and 'hip' perfect to engage with a segment of the church that the current staff all over 40 may not! (Hence the reference to me being "hip.")
So, our pastor doesn't hide who he is: professional, intelligent, bold, and intellectually witty. He dresses as you would expect: collared shirt, maybe sweater over it, slacks, and dress shoes.
And neither do I: college minded, spastic, ADD, easy-going, and Dumb and Dumber. And I dress with long hair, 'hip' jeans, never a sweater, and chucks.

I think there is much truth in what you've brought up here. The problem comes in when it's obvious the staff is trying to appeal to a generation or age group and you can see right through their staged appearance.

I hate being referred to as 'hip.'

Each week we have a get together (typically at Starbucks as well) and review the previous Sunday, iron out the coming Sunday, and talk about the following Sunday.
It depends on how organized I get. I try to get 80% of the songs 2 weeks out. Didn't happen this week but I'm working on it. I love the idea of getting 3 weeks done at a time though. I'm working towards that. At least 80% of the songs, still leaves wiggle room for topically applicable songs to be added closer to that Sunday as we discuss it further.

Hmmm I think there's a review out there that brings up this topic as well :) HAHAHA

Yeah we do the Lincoln Brewster version of the tune but after we played it the 1st time we (the band) had the same discussion, something just doesn't click. So we did it again to see if that not clicking was something of our band or of our congregation. But after the 2nd time we still felt the not clicking and we thought it wasn't just us.
It's apparent through this post that some love this song and it works and at other places it doesn't. That shouldn't be too surprising. But I'd give the song a chance on a Sunday morning/evening before making my mind up. See how the congregation responds to it. But I've fallen prey to this, I make my mind up that it's not going to work and I'm gonna shelf it after we've done it this one time and I perform it instead of worship with it and I hate myself afterwards.
Can't wait to hear how it goes!

Right on Los. Funny you say this, after being away from home for 8 days I canceled worship practice tonight so I could spend time with my wife and kid. I couldn't stand to come home after 8 days and spend another night away from my girls. And the worship team was glad I did that! I know that sounds bad, they weren't like 'THANK GOD HE CANCELED PRACTICE! HA GET IT! THANK GOD!! HAHA!" they were like, 'Right on man.' So that was encouraging as well.

Yeah, the worst thing of ministry is how hard it is to leave 'work at work.' It just seems to follow me around everywhere I go, which I suppose some should since our 'work' is to lead people publicly to worship. I've gotten to the point of silencing the phone for the first couple hours home, not opening the computer for emails, and simply enjoying snack and Hanny Manny or Lil Ine-sine and jumping off furniture and chasing the white dragons that look like cats at our house.
And yet, I read your post and am reminded of how important that is, and sometimes I overlook it! I think I'll pick up Chloe early today and try to beat my wife home!

To the right we have a young White family like ours, to my left I have Middle Eastern family, next to them older White family, next to them 2 Asian Families side to side. Back on the corner on the right a family of Black Americans. Across the street we have mostly older retired people. I love the diversity as well. We're in a neighborhood and most people spend their time outside in the front yard or walking dogs or what not. My neighbor cut my grass even...weird but cool I suppose.

I feel your pain, I was set to get a new iPod a while back and got pulled over in a speed trap. Rushing to get my and my kiddo to the grandparents house and I was the first one off the line and they nailed me for 10 over the speed limit. I was hoping my 1 year old would start wailing and I could get off on sympathy but she's incredible and just sat there talking nicely and calling out "Bus" or "Car" as they drove by and such.
I do think it's hysterical you were able to catch all that on video for us!

Wow did someone really say "people from the South are really stupid." And I thought us Southnas were close minded stereotypical egotists :)

Having a problem with geography is one thing but having a problem thinking for yourself is another one. The poor girl floundered because she can't think. Everything else she said in that interview was so scripted and rehearsed it hurt to listen to. Sweet Lord, her answer for what she was going to do next must have been practiced and rehearsed in front of the mirror and her parents more than a dozen times. That's the real tragedy of this clip to me.

Now back to ma pork-n-beans, bud light at 9 in the morning, and Judge Judy!

Gotcha buddy! and I agree with you. One of the most anticipated CDs this year because of the songs already heard (on previous releases) and then if you've been to any Passion event or seen Crowder over the summer you've probably already heard "O, for a thousand..." and "Remedy" and the youtube clip of the guitar hero "Neverending" so it does already seem real familiar add to it the Illuminate feeling and yeah, I'm left wanting MORE!

Dude these posts are just crazy. Rae and I have been traveling to NP for Thirsty or Passion events or NP Sundays or KidStuf or 722 whatever for like 5 years or so now and leave going "Wow what did you think of that guy Andy, Louie, Jeff, Brad, et." and here you are working for them! I think that's hilarious. It's totally been where we go to feel 'normal' and to confirm what God's doing in our lives. Its cool to hear that these people are every bit as authentic and awesome as they appear to be. Thanks for that.

Ever since I've seen this promo out and about, I keep wondering how lazy we'll become in our playing. The Holy Observer even posted a funny article along the same lines with 'The Worship Leader Guitar' that would auto adjust for which ever key you'd like to play in so all you'd ever have to know were G, C, D and Em :)

HOWEVER, your point here is the first time I've actually thought about this in a sincere manner because I totally agree! I've been there/done that and have seen and heard it done before as well.

I'm curious, and maybe this is the difference in the ATL culture as to the BR culture, you even said it yourself: it requires some vocal chops to pull off. How does that help/hinder worship? Do people in the congregation have trouble singing along? What's the thought process behind that when creating a killer new version like that?

But please, I live in Baton Rouge and we are not all "down in the Bayou." Dino's cool and all but I hate the impression that we're all "down in the Bayou." I live in a neighborhood like many found all across the nation and will be without power at LEAST until September 29th. Sherwood Forrest was demolished.

I'm with you man. Rae and I used to casually watch Miami Ink but we are faithful LA Inkers! We've been on the fence since we got married about getting tatts together and now we're truly brainstorming. The problem I have now is narrowing them down :)
My descent is Irish too (I believe.) Conner from my Dad's side and Smith (English) from my Mom's. We don't have a castle however, just a pub! But then doesn't everyone from Ireland! HA!

We found out at a family vacation that playing it with our Gram (who's from Puerto Rico) is the most hilarious time you could ever have. We'd tried a million games but this one takes the cake. Even though I can't remember a time of her actually "living" there the language barrier is still there sometimes and especially in moments of high yelling and buzzing :)

Yeah I used to do EVERYTHING via email just b/c it was easier. I do youth so I have a slew of volunteers to communicate and coordinate with on that side, worship with a team of musicians, small group with a group of about 5 or 6 couples, not including staff and other varied people to 'work with.' I found the more I 'talked' through email the more they did and what a snowball effect of 'assigning motives' comes out of email! WOW! Now, I simply coordinate schedules and make announcements via email and go back to the phone as much as possible. Way more time consuming on the front end but way less stress on the back!!

Steve did you ever really like Ryan in the 1st place??? I think it's pretty spot on. I remember Business School when Ryan took Michael to speak at his college class and Ryan spent the intro on how Dunder Mifflin is going down and behind the times and is 'over.' It fits.

Ok, so was this your 1st time seeing it? I could imagine it not living up to the hype...maybe, I mean there is a TON of hype!! So if your just now watching it I can empathize. However, it's probably my most favorite entertaining movie of the year so far :)
You must have missed my review a while back. That was my one criticism, as much as I loved it, I hated that Michael Bay did it. He can't make an action movie, he MUST make an Actiomedy and pepper ridiculous cheese scenes throughout. Despite that, the action and the transforming Transformers just does it for me!!

Man, I HATE those phone calls. Its hilarious though because what you described is what I did as well: procrastinated for about an hour, wrote down key thoughts and then called. Only, I got that person's voicemail and had to do it all over again later that evening! I've found, for me, the anticipation of the call is far worse than the call itself!

Seriously, though yeah we have "church" in there and we have girl scouts in there and we have concerts in there and graduations for the home schoolers in there, dinner in there, you name it! So it feels weird calling it a "sanctuary."

I'm also with "Brother Bobby" up there :) I'm not a huge fan of labels.

We have some problems regarding room eq, awful reverb prone room, wireless systems, etc. We have a pretty hefty system and 'friends of friends' in "the biz" no longer suffice. Oh man, you have no idea how much this post just put in to words what I sometimes have a hard time saying out loud. I would pend something to the end of your post b/c I typically get objections from this kind of talk but let's be real: yes the Holy Spirit can show up any time any place and any where and worship can break forth. I think it's our responsibility to create an environment that lends itself to leading people to a more conducive place for that to happen in the culture of my church/your church/etc.
That being said, this is a GREAT list of the human side of the equation that after prayer and seeking God to show up, we can do! I'm going to print it out and start my own.

I've never thought about this before but we talked about it last week at worship rehearsal so it's something we are thinking about now :)
I've definitely seen it work. Our pastor is very expressive in his worship and when he's on vacation there's not someone in the front worshipping and it makes a difference.

I've never given Dollar much attention and I wish I had caught Nightline. I began reading their article and was stunned and offended that I had to read all 3 pages.

Why he says he's doing it seems legit. People DO need to learn to balance their check book and budget and do their finances! Good things to learn but it's not fundamental to the gospel and to use the pulpit to do it?! So we focus on peace? love? grace? and that takes a back seat to finances?!?!? Who in their right mind does that?

And personally, just me, I would be DISGUSTED if the people in my congregation gathered up 280k and spent it on a freakin' car! My goodness, I would quit on the spot b/c I would then have validation that everything I was trying to teach them about God had fallen on deaf ears. A CAR!! Seriously!

Dude THAT'S your job?!?! What's that job description so I can put it into the "Must Have" list for next year. I'm with you in that mindset straight-on! I think our church is there as well. Unfortunately, we're at that point where everyone is spread so thin across their ministries and we're growing that we sometimes can't keep up. I currently do worship and youth full time and it's exhausting and yet I see more things that I want to do or more people that need to get better at the 1 thing they do.
But yeah, you're not alone. It's the struggle I have every weekend.

I can't believe ya'll thought this was the best episode of the season? Obviously I'm in the minority though. I found another blog review that agreed with you.
You bring up an interesting theory. I thought that Jack didn't want to see the baby b/c he's assuming it's Sawyer's (since he saw them bumping boots in the video camera and obviously hasn't let that go) and I'm assuming Kate won't tell him b/c she wants him to unconditionally love him and I suppose is testing Jack's love. It's all a bit of hogwash when it's the thing standing in the way of your happily ever after. But what if there is something wrong with Aaron? OR...WAIT A MINUTE...isn't Claire like the daughter of Jack's Dad's mistress or something crazy like that? So maybe there really is just some shame there? I don't know. Off to the internet to see if I made that up.

Rae and I are in the similar predicament. However, home schooling isn't an option for us. Ours is the debate to stay in our parish and send to her to Private school (Christian School) or move to another parish where the public schools are really good.

We have a congregation of about 400.
Sun 9AM - Middle School only
Sun 10:45 - No youth activities
Sun 4:30 - No church but both Middle School and High School meet.

We've identified that 9AM is probably a bad time to have youth in the morning if we can only do it at one time we should do it at 10:45 so we're looking to do that either in the summer or the fall. We encourage High school to serve in the mornings.

Oh Alex, thanks! I remember hearing about this last year. My wife and I personally stopped doing crazy needless stuff at Christmas. I told her 3 years ago to never, EVER get me another Playstation/xBox/blah blah game that I'd play for 2 months and then put away and never take out again. I love this and you're right, that video is top notch!

Wow it always makes me sad when someone goes on TV and runs their mouth about subjects they obviously have no knowledge about. Charles is so quick to try and quote scripture but he appears to have no other knowledge other than his 1 little arrow of "Don't judge."

Oh man our Easter was pretty great. At least for me it was pretty great :) I prayed all morning that something magical and supernatural would happen during our times of worship and that we'd truly celebrate! For me this happened and it was amazing. From what I could tell, it happened for many others as well but I'm working on the video component right now to see how things did go over.

Haha the Altoid tin is funny. For the longest time I used to carry around pics in an old Altoids can. I'd leave it out on my amp or guitar case or somewhere forgetting what it was and people continuously would ask me, "Hey man can I have a mint?"

This is hilarious. I just read a great article one of the editors of Entertainment Weekly wrote about using his Kindle, and just his Kindle, for his time off and no books, magazines, or newspapers! A rave review with a A given to the device.
My pastor just got one. I'm sure he'll love it. Too bad I don't like to read that much :)

I love #7! It's you're "out." Hahaha. Although I suppose that's me. I'm on twitter b/c I love technology and I think it's hilariously fun. I also find it to be a creative way to network and build community with people who don't live within my city. Lastly, I find it a way to connect people to my blog. My blog doesn't sell anything...but me. Again, a way to connect and network and build community.
In the end, even reading this article was fun. I think I might have a weird sense of humor though.

Hey Fred. I'm not sure if you can answer this or not since you may not have one but I remember the deal with the cases for the iPods went something like the leather folios (I suppose like your 1st example) were the best for keeping your iPod intact w/o scratching it. The hard slip cases like the other examples tended to scratch the iPod. Do you know if that's the case with these as well? I think I like the 1st example anyway, with the clip and it simply hugs the iPhone gently. Any thoughts or favorites yet?

WOW. We caught him one Sunday as he filled in for Andy at NPCC. My wife read his book and when she saw he was going to be there got really excited. It's funny because his 'formula' is here on my desk :)

Incredible speaker with some great stuff. He at first worried me because it was all about gaining momentum and alot of self help and I kept thinking, "If he doesn't bring up God here and begins pushing his book I'm walking out."
Then he got to the G, I should have known, which was God. It was great! Loved the whole thing.

Oh this is great! Last week we had spontaneous combustion in a different way. Because of time in our 2nd service we pulled an audible to play "Breathe" during communion and not invite the congregation to 'stand and sing' with us.
It was beautiful. THEY DIDN'T NEED TO BE ASKED TO SING! Here we are playing Breathe and singing it and as the congregation sits down I see them ...singing! Some even had ...their eyes closed! Some even were bowing their heads! Worship broke out without me having to do anything! Thank you God! It was one of the most amazing things I've had the privelage of being a part of!

5:30am - wake up and wonder why kids aren't awake? If they're not I'm not.
5:35am - go back to bed
7:00am - turn off alarm. Wow kids still asleep!
7-8am - Wife and I get ready for our day.
8am - Kids up and house is a buzz!
9am - Out the door to daycare
9:30 - Daycare administer meeting
10am - Heading to work
10-11:30 - Work organization - emails, weekend final prepwork, other randomness to iron out for rest of the week
11:30-12 - Leftover lunch in the church kitchen
12-1:30pm - Sanctuary organization
2pm - Coffee meeting at LSU campus with college student
3-4:30pm - Work at LSU mooching free wifi
5:00pm - Pick up Kiddos from daycare
5:30 - Paper, rock, scissors with wife for who gets to play with kiddos and who gets to cook dinner :)
6:30 - EAT
7pm - Curious George with Chloe on the sofa while Gavin gets a bath
8pm - Gavin's asleep and I'm giving Chloe a bath
8:30pm - Storytime
9pm - Thank Rae for cleaning the kitchen while I tell stories
9:15 - I hit sofa, Rae hits arm chair
9:30 - Realize we have so much more to do for Chloe's birthday party on Saturday!
10pm - Clean house
11pm - Rae collapses and goes to bed
12:00 - My brain finally shuts down and I go to bed

So Fred how does that work? This year we began toying around with making out own videos. I created a 4 week promo video series for a Parenting By the Book series we did. Our own testimonies and 'actors' and such but I used current popular instrumentals as the background score. (DCFC's Possess Your Heart intro, Foo Fighters' Miners of Bakersfield, one of the instrumentals off Viva La Vida.) Being that it was run in house and was not used to collect any money I was thinking I was OK. But also being that it was my 1st, I didn't check or anything either. Did I engage in some violations? Where can I get more info on this?
