No-one turned up, except for myself and Charles. Kat was working until Midnight. By the time we'd been to Doscher and bought meat salad and beer, we might as well ahve gone to a local sports bar, and had some beer and wngs. Still we made the best of it, and it was a relaxing evening.

I found some Blue Moon in Doschers, which is a rather excellent US made, Belgian Style wheat beer. It was around $.530 for six 12 oz bottles. I had some of that on tap the other evening in Wild Wings on Rivers Avenue. Mind you it was $3 a pint there.

Re: Party for Corn and Antonio

Granted that the people that were invited have all valid excuses, but never mind, we will go out before he leaves when we take him to Atlanta and maybe meet up with my cousin, Aya at the City Cafe....

Re: I only went to get a beer

At least I bought enough to last the next evening as well, so I didn't have a stake out again the following night

Re: Happy Birthday Mum!

Hope you had a wonderful celebration MUM!!!

Re: Kat’s Birthday

Yeah Ian is rather cool and trendy isn’t he :-) Better move down to Florida will he will feel at home with all the other dudes ;-)

Re: Kat’s Birthday

I'll blankie, you my girl. That's the thing that annoys me about Microsoft so much, they want to tie you into them for everything, and abuse standards that are agreed worldwide to do so.

You do NOT need Micorsoft Office to open a word file. You can download the excellent open source and free OpenOffice.

It will read AND write word files, and also WordPerfect ones too (some folks still have word perfect).

It also reads/writes Excel spreadsheets, and Powerpoint files, and MS-Access Databases too.

It also has its own native OD (open Document ) format for these files, and they are considerably smaller if using the files locally or with someone else with open office, No need to use Word format then.

I use both Windows and Linux machines here, and the cross platform capability is useful, and as OpenOffice, along with Firefox and Thunderbird, run on Linux machines as well as Windows ones, I dont' need to learn another program when switching machines.

Linux flavor here? Not because they produce the best product, but it's what most folks are 'weaned" on as you say.

Microsoft products are necessarily all bad, but they're often not the best, yet it's all a lot of people know.

I used to use MS office and Outlook myself, and when it came to paying out for yet another upgrade, I took a long hard look at OpenOffice/Thunderbird, and although I was a little unsure at first, it's grown on me, and I have no need at all to go back to the bloated, overpriced Microsoft offerings.

I always compare Microsoft to McDonalds. Mediocre product; brilliant marketing. The idea is partly to think positive, and partly to cheer yourself up when you're having one of those shitty days.

I got the idea from Clare Grant, a young lady in Tunbridge Wells, in Kent, who set up the original one at http://threebeautifulthings.co.uk

However, she puts me to shame, as she has much mre eloquent things to say in such a nicer way than I do somehow.

As for the bread, well this particular loaf came from Wal-Mart, so it's probably as full of chemicals as the ones you buy in Tesco. My experience of Tesco's bread, was that is was really fresh the day the bought it, but it went really dry in under 48 hours.

As for the fence story - I remember when I had a mid terraced house. Now I should have been responsible for one of the side fences, right? Well, both neighbors insisted that they were responsible for them, so that let me right off the hook, except the old girl next door employed some of those your cowboys that you talk of, and they did the same as you, and took a couple of feet of garden from me. Worse still they only put the 6ft fence posts about 9-10 inches into the ground, and not into anything except the soil, so the first gale brought the darn thing down, and I ended up doing it for her, with met posts.

Re: Woman Shot Dead By UK police

I really didn't the whole story about that woman's shooting though. A typical recipe for this sausage uses seasonings such as salt, sugar, pepper, and spices, plus a curing mixture that includes sodium nitrite to prevent botulism. While beef and pork are the most traditional bologna meats, exotic fare such as moose and venison can even be used. Small boutique bologna makers tend to use choice cuts of meat, but large manufacturers may use almost any part of the carcass, including organ meats, trimmings, and end pieces from other meat processing.

The meat is ground and chopped very fine, and at the big bologna factories, it's pureed so the machines can pour into casings. Like other sausages, bologna is covered in either a natural casing made from the gastrointestinal tracts of cattle, sheep, and hogs, or a synthetic casing made of collagen, fibrous materials, or even plastic. All bologna is cooked and smoked to pasteurize it, so it's ready to eat when you buy it.

American bologna sandwich meat got its name from the northern Italian town of Bologna. But this favorite of kid's lunches is not the same as the distinctively spiced Italian original, called mortadella or mortadella bologna and made in the villages around Bologna, a major trading spot. Traders may have picked up the sausage in Bologna, and the town became identified with the sausage. By the late 19th century in England and America, "bologna" had become the generic name for any type of pork sausage from the Italian town.

So bologna didn't start with Oscar, but he sure made it fun for American kids.

Re: Friends

No, I am a total figment of your imagination. Fresh bread is one of the few things that is more expensive here than in the UK (about twice the price). I'm talking about 'real' bread from a bakers here, not the sliced supermarket stuff! Anyway, with a 1LB loaf costing anything up to about $3.30, and a bag of bread flour which makes quite a few loaves for $2.64, it's a no-brainer really.

Joan: Yes it was delicious. In fact, when I make it, I have to agree with Di's comments that one has to be real careful about eating it! I have to limit myself, or I could, with some good sharp vermont cheese, quite easily consume half a loaf, along with some good beer, and probably add a few pounds a WEEK to my already oversized gut.

Re: Wade Hampton

Always look forward to a nice hot summer. I just don't like processed food, TV Dinners, frozen packet stuff, junk and fast food. If it's good food, freshly prepared, there's little I don't eat.

I was looking at stuff recently like packets of flavored rice, and canned soups. One serving of many of these products is over half your recommended sodium intake for the day. The typical can of soup is reckoned to be two servings, so when you eat the whole can (they're not that big) for lunch for example, that really means you shouldn't have any more salt for the rest of the day.

Re: Walmer Lifeboat

I was excited at the time I took it, as it was some of the first photographs I ever got to take with my own camera - a Brownie Box. I remember the very first time I had a beer in Belguim. It was in a ferry terminal. I resigned myself to Stella, and wow! what a nice suprise.
