I have been watching the whole presidential race out of the corner of my eye since I was one of those people who was almost denied the opportunity to vote in 2004. Obama's win renewed my enthusiasm in the process.

Re: Debate Open Thread

I thought Obama did a great job. He wasn't the "angry black man" he was well versed on the issues and was able to point and counterpoint very well. I did notice he had more "audible pauses" than she did (Toastmaster, sorry) but that did not distract from the substance of his arguments.

Some have suggested Hillary was the winner but his ability to get back to the issues and present his position time and time again makes him the winner in my book.

I don't want to see Hillary on the ticket at all, but I would not mind Edwards.

Re: Debate Open Thread

Michelle,

Very well said.

Re: Super Tuesday Open Thread 1; Black Women’s Roundtable Tonight

Just cast my vote foe Obama in NJ. When I told him Obama, he was so happy. He went on to talk about all of Obama's qualities. I started to wonder if he was working for his campaign. He told me that when he began sharing Obama's virtues with his pastor and other trustees he got a chilly reception. Can anyone here say "old guard?" I am so proud of my 70 year old Dad. As someone who graduated college in 1960, and participated in the lunch counter sit-ins, I guess he still appreciates hope and change.

Re: Obama Wins Maine Caucus

Obama's wife Michelle is a guest on Larry King this week.

Re: We Received a Nice Note From Tavis Smiley about Barack Obama

As a former long-time DC area resident, I believe it will take a uniter (who also knows how to identify the right people for cabinet posts) to bring about any kind of change.

Obviously some folks do not seem to understand it is a new day and time to do things a new way. Do they know something that we don't know? Otherwise all of their actions seem really shameful.

It's one thing to be a sore loser, it's another thing to be so willing to divide a party and ignore the will of the people. If it were just Republicans doing this I think I could easily dismiss it as politics as usual but it's not and so it really makes no sense at all.

What do these CBC members owe the Clintons that causes them to ignore their own constituency???

Re: The Morning After - Some Thoughts

Powerful post Rikyrah,

I refused to believe Americans were that gullible, then I heard the people in Ohio and shook my head. In other words, I really resented the fact that the words of his pastor were used against him and then he had to explain away the pastor's words which were not his own.

Whether one agrees with Pastor Wright's words or not, I also felt a bit annoyed that now the black church has to explain how it functions to people who could care less about it. It has been the one place many of us could go to and release all the stress and anxiety we have to carry from day to day. Now we have to be concerned that some damn mole is there and the pastor has to watch every word he or she says. Can you say "chilling effect."

I want to see Obama win and I understand why he had to give the speech, I just don't appreciate the fact he was forced off message and on the defense for someone else's choices.

So can we get back to the issues NOW!

Re: Transcript Of Obama Speech: A More Perfect Union (Now With Video) - Update 2

Thanks Nita,

I could not understand why I was not as moved as others were then I realized it was because I was pissed off.

Guess it's time to make another donation to the Obama campaign...It makes me feel better.

Re: Obama’s - ‘More Perfect Union’ : Some Afterthoughts

Anon 12:41,

I mentioned that "chilling effect" in my last post. To this day many white people become uncomfortable when blacks congregate in large numbers, begin to speak, dress or act in a way that does not conform.

If I apply that same concept to colonialism across the world I can see similarities.

So I wonder do white people expect conformity from people of color to calm their fears of not being in control?

Also, perhaps for some, the willingness to conform comes as a result of that history of colonialism and slavery where the failure to fall in line resulted in a denial of the basic necessities of life such as food, clothing, shelter and employment. And to some extent still does today.

Just thinking out loud, people can agree or disagree. I just think this goes beyond "professionalism." Perhaps I am stating the obvious, but based on the posts I am not sure it is so obvious to everyone.

Re: Oreos & Coconuts: Do blacks and Asians have to behave like white people to succeed?

brownsugaqt86,

I hear you.

rikyrah,

Not that I consider myself militant at this point in my life, but I have traveled outside the US to Africa and the Caribbean and I did not feel I was viewed so much as an American but as a black American and it was not particularly positive. I hope they send a message just like Iowa did.

Re: Through the Looking Glass……Senator Robert Byrd Endorses Barack Obama

I am not pleased with the timing either, but anyone who knows Byrd knows he's all about maximizing the pork for WV.

He managed to get the FBI and CIA to move parts of their operations to the state and it is likely he is acting on behalf of his constituency now, because when Obama wins, Byrd would prefer that Obama not hold that primary result against the state.

Re: JJP On The Young Turks Last Friday

Good interview.

Re: O Hell Nawl Comic On Black Hillary Supporters - Traitors

I agree. I thought Hillary was shady pre-race-baiting but I can remember the 90s when everyone was oh so happy.

Post-race baiting black Hillary supporters remind me of people numb from abuse. They are in denial about the abuse or make excuses for their abuser.

"Oh, it's okay she didn't really mean it, it's my fault that she said those mean things." Or "Obama made her react that way." Give me a break.

Re: Gergen Tells Hillary To Denounce Racist Vote. These folks finally realized racism can be contagious and they are afraid of losing to the GOP once again.

Otherwise, they could have spoken up sooner before the damage was done.

Re: Hillary Clinton LIES - SHE IS NOT AHEAD IN THE POPULAR VOTE

Sounds like you could use that skillet right about now...

Re: Al Jazeera In Ohio

Wow, I know so many people who worked at that plant as interns, engineers and on the assembly line.
