I was at home glued to the television reflecting on my college days when Jessie Jackson ran for the first time.

I felt proud and hopeful. I have been watching the whole presidential race out of the corner of my eye since I was one of those people who was almost denied the opportunity to vote in 2004. Obama's win renewed my enthusiasm in the process.

I thought Obama did a great job. He wasn't the "angry black man" he was well versed on the issues and was able to point and counterpoint very well. I did notice he had more "audible pauses" than she did (Toastmaster, sorry) but that did not distract from the substance of his arguments.

Some have suggested Hillary was the winner but his ability to get back to the issues and present his position time and time again makes him the winner in my book.

I don't want to see Hillary on the ticket at all, but I would not mind Edwards.

Sorry for the typo, that should be "for" Obama.

Just called up my Dad to say hello and he actually asked me who I voted for. When I told him Obama, he was so happy. He went on to talk about all of Obama's qualities. I started to wonder if he was working for his campaign. He told me that when he began sharing Obama's virtues with his pastor and other trustees he got a chilly reception. Can anyone here say "old guard?" I am so proud of my 70 year old Dad. As someone who graduated college in 1960, and participated in the lunch counter sit-ins, I guess he still appreciates hope and change.

I think Obama did well sticking to the issues and stating the facts. And yes, he has greatly reduced his audible pauses. Now if Hillary would just accept the obvious and chill out we could hear more substance instead of those desperate attempts to distract.

I am really beginning to wonder about this effort by Clinton to stay in the race beyond the time any reasonable candidate would step aside and the push by certain CBC members to keep her in the race. Do they know something that we don't know? Otherwise all of their actions seem really shameful.

It's one thing to be a sore loser, it's another thing to be so willing to divide a party and ignore the will of the people. If it were just Republicans doing this I think I could easily dismiss it as politics as usual but it's not and so it really makes no sense at all.

What do these CBC members owe the Clintons that causes them to ignore their own constituency???

I refused to believe Americans were that gullible, then I heard the people in Ohio and shook my head. For so many this isn't politics as usual, and if HRC is the nominee by whatever underhanded means she employs I cannot vote for her. But she CANNOT become the nominee. If she does, I am done with the Democratic Party as well.

I heard back from a friend in Ohio. She said they ran out of ballots and changed her polling place at the last minute. She told me people there were afraid of Obama. Like I said...politics as usual.

You make a key point, perhaps they are playing to the perceived "fantasy" aspect of his candidacy.

Afterall, it seems many still cannot believe it is possible to elect a Black man as President and even as we get closer to the possibility, there seem to be many who want to put the brakes on his momentum despite popular opinion.

I don't think it will hurt him but it could be construed as just one more subliminal mockery of his character and potential.

It took me all day to comment because I could not put my feelings into words.

As good as Obama's speech was, I found myself angry that he had to give it when he gave it for the reasons he had to give it. In other words, I really resented the fact that the words of his pastor were used against him and then he had to explain away the pastor's words which were not his own.

Whether one agrees with Pastor Wright's words or not, I also felt a bit annoyed that now the black church has to explain how it functions to people who could care less about it. It has been the one place many of us could go to and release all the stress and anxiety we have to carry from day to day. Now we have to be concerned that some damn mole is there and the pastor has to watch every word he or she says. Can you say "chilling effect."

I want to see Obama win and I understand why he had to give the speech, I just don't appreciate the fact he was forced off message and on the defense for someone else's choices.

So can we get back to the issues NOW!

I do not know much about Tim Wise but I referenced the writing after seeing it on Racialicious because I was not hearing too many Whites saying anything beyond what the pundits have been offering the last few days.

I have already expressed my anger and disgust here with this latest political ploy so I will not focus on it at the moment.

I don't think Tim Wise's comments are more credible because he is White and I agree he is saying what many here have already said. I just wanted to pass on the essay.

One can debate the definition of success all day long, but for those families who are struggling to make ends meet, who continue to lose their homes and jobs, the concern for cost of the war to the folks back home resonates.

the majority culture = white

with an expectation that everyone conform to that majority culture and suppress anything that differs be it hair, dress, speech, mannerisms, etc.

Valid point. I know when I joined the NYC/Wall street culture my southern accent was frowned upon.

I had clearly entered an environment where southern seemed to = dumb yet I could not have obtained the position I held if I were not educated. However, I am Black so I see it from that perspective as well.

You mentioned the concept of the "militant Black person" and I started thinking...

If I reflect on slavery in general and Haiti and Nat Turner specifically, I realize the concept of assimilation goes way back pretty far. To this day many white people become uncomfortable when blacks congregate in large numbers, begin to speak, dress or act in a way that does not conform.

If I apply that same concept to colonialism across the world I can see similarities.

So I wonder do white people expect conformity from people of color to calm their fears of not being in control?

Also, perhaps for some, the willingness to conform comes as a result of that history of colonialism and slavery where the failure to fall in line resulted in a denial of the basic necessities of life such as food, clothing, shelter and employment. And to some extent still does today.

Just thinking out loud, people can agree or disagree. I just think this goes beyond "professionalism." Perhaps I am stating the obvious, but based on the posts I am not sure it is so obvious to everyone.

Not that I consider myself militant at this point in my life, but I have traveled outside the US to Africa and the Caribbean and I did not feel I was viewed so much as an American but as a black American and it was not particularly positive. I will say it was eye opening though.

Interesting perspective. Given the fact I saw whites treated much better led me to believe the perception was based on the reputation maliciously spread about us worldwide or prior experiences.

Further, since I know I went out of my way to be respectful of individuals and their cultures and I did not "look down upon our Brothers and Sisters" I can only conclude it had less to do with me as an individual as it had to do with what they chose to believe.

As I read the headline "why can't Obama seal the deal?" I thought about how his campaign is a reflection of efforts African Americans make to succeed and the resistance we often encounter despite having the education and experience.

While we have to be 3 times smarter, we are told so "Oh stop whining", or look at the unfair advantage "they" are getting. Obama's campaign is our struggle amplified for the world to see.

We have to be strong to make it through and like you said so does he. Generations before us have done it... we can too! Hang in there.

I'd like to think WV is all about the coal and the candidate who comes up with a way to support clean coal will get their support but I hear it's just not that simple. Apparently clean coal just isn't that clean and I gather some folks can't get past SBO's race...

On another note, my mother was from KY, she used to tell me there were way more Black folks in the small towns of KY than there were in OH where we were living at the time. I gather that is no longer true either.

Hey tree bark, they didn't claim 100 kpm (whatever a kpm is) they claimed 160 kph which according to them is about 100 mph.
