A few points about your Obama paragraph: First, I fail to see how blaming both nations, calling for withdrawl, and demanding a cease fire are "all over the map." These three position seem to be fairly consistent, in my opinion. Second, what evidence do you have for stating that Obama didn't fully understand the implications of admitting Georgia into NATO? Don't you think Russia would have been less likely to invade if Georgia had the full force of NATO behind it? Personally, I believe Russia specifically chose to take action now, before a possible NATO membership for Georgia. Russians I have talked to believe the "Georgia in NATO" discussion is part of a US campaign to attack Russia's power in the region without having to risk a fight. If the Russian government believes that, their current actions are a strong warning to the US and should be a reality check for our politicians. So I respect your opinion of Obama's stance on Georgia's NATO membership, but some sort of support for your argument would help.

I would add that McCain has consistently and loudly called for Georgia to join NATO, has complained about any delay, and has made it clear that he wants Georgia to join NATO in order to piss of the Russians. I also found a message from Obama to Georgia on August 1st urging to resist the temptation to get into a military conflict with Russia. He certainly called that one right.

in Pelosi Urges Some Dems to Back Drilling -- Political Wire on Political Wire
I don't really understand the first two comments here.....I think this is a fairly admirable move, regardless of what you think about Pelosi's record.
The fact is that offshore drilling is a losing issue for Democrats right now. Around 80% of Americans support it, probably because not many understand what it involves. Pelosi's actions allow vulnerable Dems to stay on the winning side of the issue without actuallly conceding anything in terms of actual policy. This seems entirely natural to me. She's putting her own image at risk in order to help the party get as many seats as possible in November.
Of course I would like to see the Democrats be a little more vocal about the basic impossibility of offshore drilling doing anything positive, but what Pelosi is trying is the right move at this time.

it's a losing issue because they are losing the issue. it's not inherently a losing issue. how about she explains for 2 minutes that off shore drilling has a million risks. scare the crap out of the people along both coasts. you know, like the republicans do.
