Apathy. Think about how scary that would be if it were actually something physiologically transmissible. You'd not care enough to go in to work, ignore a baby crying for food, and be unaffected by your wife's crying and pleading for you to just be there. If people were completely unaffected emotionally by their world, think about how horrifying things would get.
