Happy Birthday neighbor!
Thank YOU for the video today. What great messages you send to all. All the best to you in the coming year - may you have safe travels, good health and lots of quality time with your family...and, of course, many laughs and good interactions with the people you meet along the way.

in Blazers take umbrage at Rock Racing’s kit switching on Quickrelease.tv
He may have got his wrist slapped, but it wasn't a huge story....it was seen as silly and fun and Mario being Mario. It was, in my opinion, great! :)

carltonreid I agree, Donna. It all brings acolour to the sport. In Rock Racing's
case: green, then black, and blue for Tyler.

Does anyone remember Mario Cippolini? Talk about different kits for each day?! People loved it then...now it seems "bad". Oy. Get over it people (not specifically those here commenting, I agree w/you all!). Enjoy the colors. Don't over analyze it all. Enjoy the fun.

Carlton - been following along on Twitter all summer. Sean's doing a good job. Nice to see the face behind the Tweets. Josh did a great job with the photos! Impressive. You know I'm stoked to see Tyler's successes this summer. Thanks for the interview! Great to hear him so positive and getting the attention he deserves. Thanks!

carltonreid Well, Donna. As you know some (most?) sections of the British bike
press are not terribly interested in talking to Tyler, for reasons
which are obvious, to them. He wasn't exactly mobbed, as befits an
Olympic Champion and TdF stage winner. And I guess if any Brit journos
did get close, their questioning would be hostile. I'll repeat this
for ever and a day: the great majority of those who attack Tyler will
have never read Campbell's arbitration dissent. To my great shame, I
hadn't...until the Floyd Landis case opened my eyes to what the anti-
doping orgs get up to in order to secure confessions and bans. It's a
statistical fact that *some* innocent athletes will get nabbed along
with the guilty ones but such a possibility is ignored by the lynch mob.

carltonreid Thanks for the racks, Donna. In the rush of today I forgot to take pix
of just the racks. They were FULL, an excellent start to Bike to
School Week. And the the kids who brought bikes today didn't do any
school work, it was cycling all day long for the lucky few!

I nominate Tim "Masiguy" Jackson. http://masiguy.blogspot.com
Tim always puts others first - his friends, his kids, his coworkers. He's a busy guy but takes time to foster all kinds of community spirit through his blog and the group blog he put together and the industry podcast he's part of and....(taking a breath)...teaching newbies how it's done without missing a beat (kind of like someone else I know....). He's passionate about cycling and let's that show in his blog and around the whole community. Currently, he's been posting about the fires in Southern California, with pictures, since it's all he can think about with it literally in his back yard.

in What getting my bike stolen taught me about PR on The New PR
Ryan - we are so sorry to hear about the loss of your bike. Thieves just stink! Truly.

It's nice to hear that you found a shop owner who understands the importance of customer service. As you said, it was a small gesture on his part (because he has the bikes) but meant a lot to you.

We thank you, in advance, for your Kryptonite lock purchase. Please remember to register your key number with us as soon as you get the lock home (you can do it online for free) and, if the lock you choose has it, sign up for the anti-theft protection offer. It won't allow you to hunt down anyone if your bike is stolen, but it is the most inclusive offer in the marketplace. Hopefully, you'll never have to use it!

Also, check out the proper lock up tips on our website. Properly locking is just as important as what you lock with. You've got to do all you can to stay ahead of those pesky (and I'm being kind there) thieves.

All the best with your new bike, Ryan. We hope you have plenty of long, great rides together.

in New PR and the Kryptonite situation on Open the Dialogue
Hi Tom:
Thanks for the thoughtful reply to Dave's interview. I agree with most of what you are saying, by the way.
However, just to clarify, you might want to read the extensive interview I did with Shel and Robert over at Naked Conversations in July, '05 where we talk about the fact that Kryptonite did, indeed, post information to our website during this time. Anyone who went to our site after day 3 saw exactly what you suggest about we were researching the issue and have a plan soon. Not a blog where people could interact with us, but with a company of only 25 people, there wasn't someone at a computer constantly to interact with! We were all in planning meetings.
Also, and I've had this discussion with many bloggers in the last year, the majority of our customers were not reading blogs. Truly. We know that the majority of the people who were calling and emailing us heard about the issue from their friends, or local bike shop or, EGADS!, mainstream media. Remember, this was in the New York Times, on CNN and on NPR to name but just a few of the hundreds of traditional media hits at the time.
Yes, you are correct, more and more people are online and yes, some of our customers were online then, no question, even more are now. But, even still, the bike industry, as a whole, is not doing much blogging. Companies need to take into consideration where the majority of their customers are coming from or getting their information and market that way. Might be blogs, might not be. Each company needs to make that choice.
Also, when in the middle of a crisis, if you haven't researched your company's 'space' on the blogosphere to see who are the influencers, the middle of a crisis is not the time to do that.
Just a couple of thoughts from me before I head off for the holidays.
Thanks, again, for your comments, Tom. I truly have enjoyed 'meeting' smart people such as yourself over this last year plus.
Happy Holidays.

in Work your network! on Community Guy
Jake - I completely agree with you! I'd take it a step further, though. Try something truly shocking - get to know your neighbors! We don't seem to talk to people within our own physical community anymore. The person that lives two floors down that you see in the elevator each week at the apt. building might work for a company you want to interact with...or the woman you see everyday at the coffee shop might be a great contact for you. A simple "hello" or "good morning" may open some doors for you. Maybe not, but you'll never know if you don't take the time, like you said. Just my 2 cents.

"Be a professional and confine your grievances, alleged or otherwise, to private channels".

The world we live in has changed now that blogging is done on such a large scale. Whether they like it or not, businesses should expect that they will be talked about in blogs be that good, bad or indifferent.

As someone who has been 'on the other side' of Jake's comments, I have to say that, unlike many bloggers, he's always been fair and eager to present both sides of an issue. I think he did that here, too. He's chronicled his issue, what he's done about it and the response from the company, giving them equal 'air time' (no pun intended!).
