Not because I am lazy ad want to give up work and spend time on a beach or watching TV, I actually love working. I would just like to feel less pressure financially and give my husband the option to give up his job and start his own business if he wanted to.

Re: Payment Method Discrimination Strikes Again at the Gas Station

I do as much as I can to avoid unnecessary charges such as this but I can see why you are not keen to get another credit card. However, to save $150 a year I think that I would make the effort.

Re: Would You Tell Your Boyfriend You’re Rich?

When I first dated my husband he didn't tell me that he had money. He was obviously middle class but didn't talk about money. I guessed he was probably well off as he had a good job and we discussed out financial situations on our third date.

Re: Why I Have No Money

Sounds like you have had quite a struggle, it is great that you have started managing your money now. I definitely think that it is time that home economics classes were replaced with home finance ones.

Re: Teaching Financial Skills to Teens With Learning Disabilities

In the UK children are not taught any financial education in schools at all and so this list is really useful for me to know what to talk to my children about as I know they will not get anything like this in school.

Re: Living Paycheck to Paycheck (On Purpose)

I must admit, there is something quite exhilarating about living paycheck to paycheck, but it's certainly not for everyone.

You mentioned that a 'big chunk' goes to employer benefits - could you be a little more specific?

Re: HD DVD Officially Dead: Long Live Blu-ray

Hi Marlene - yes, it can play DVD's as well.

Jonathan

Re: HD DVD Officially Dead: Long Live Blu-ray

Woohoo - now I can finally rationalize that PS3 I bought :)

Re: Guest Post: The Beauty of Sinking Funds

This sounds like a great idea. We tend to pay some bills yearly because it is cheaper than paying them in installments and some bills we have to pay yearly such as car services etc. It is a great idea to start the year wit a bidget frecast and calculate when these expenses are likely to come so that you have the money ready when you need it.

Re: 31 Causes of Failure #5: Lack of Self-Discipline

That is so very true. I do think that if you are not naturally self-disciplined then it is very hard to change. My husband is not at all self disciplined and I am extremely disciplined. This meansthat we have a relationship where I nag him and he tells me to relax - surprisingly it works very well! I do feel sorry for him though, as he tried really hard to be well discipline dbut it just doesnt seem to be in his nature.

Re: Can I tolerate my son’s religious education?

I gues syou have to decide whether you can afford the more expensive schooling that is not Catholic or whether you want to risk being in a school with a worse education record. In your situation I woudl go for the Catholic school too. I was brought up as a Christian, stopped believing at 9, started again at 11 for a few years and then stopped again. I went to sunday school and church until I was about 6. My school taught Religious Education and we had religious assembilies once a week. I feel that it has been very useful having a knowledge of Christinity even though I choose not to believe in it. It means that when I attend church for weddings etc I knw the hyms and understand what is goig to happen. I also have evidence to back up my arguements for not believing in God. I think it is fair that children are taught about religion so that they can choose themselves what to believe in and this is a way that they will get that education.

Re: the charity customer

I dislike the charity workers in the UK who try to sell you monthly subscriptions in the street. Most people do not know that they get paid commission on the sale - probably equivilent to your first years payments.

Re: a simple way to save money on food

I know people who refuse to eat breakfast as they say that it helps them to lose weight. However, they are overweight and so I am not at all convinced that their theory is correct. I always eat breakfast and am in a daze if I do not eat.

Re: associating with the ‘appear-to-be-rich’ folks

Interesting article. I must agree that it is not easy to be inspired by people who have little but money in the bank. I do often feel very jealous though, if I see people who seem to have everything they want even if they do have lots of debts. It is tricky to know who is the best person to associate with.
