in Obama Campaign Pushes Back Against Underground Email Attacks on The Iowa Independent
I am a veteran of the US Army.
I do not believe there is a bigger patriot in America today than Senator Obama.

When I was in Iraq I heard over the news about Bush's (A draft Dodgers') swiftboating attack on John Kerry, a true American Hero. And know the Republican machine is running anti patriotism attacks? What hypocrites!

I learned in the US Army that you wear your patriotism in your heart and you don't advertise it for your own personal gain and neither do you use it to attack others.

They must not have taught you that in girls state, Peggy

in King to campaign for Miller-Meeks on The Iowa Independent
I heard in her last press release that Miller-Meeks' role model is former congressman Leach. She said that she has worked with him and thinks the world of him. Now she is campaigning with Steve King?

Steve King who thinks the world will implode because of Barack Obama's middle name, Steve King who believes that illegal immigrants are animals, Steve King who has embarassed Iowa to no end? The same man who has bad mouthed soldiers?

And Congressman Leach, the same man that has endorsed Obama? The man that fought in a bi-partisan way for the betterment of Iowa? The man who consistantly won a largely Democratic district by huge margins despite being a Republican?

It really seems like Miller-Meeks is developing some kind of multiple personality disorder.

I think Obama has really gotten many Republcians onto his side because he represents a new way of thinking. In ways he really reminds me of Ronald Regan. This election will be decided by "Obama Republicans".

in CQ Politics: McCain’s New Hampshire lean could cost him Iowa on The Iowa Independent
I beleive that the GOP is writing off Iowa. McCain's views on ethanol are contrary to Iowa farmers. McCain also has a violent history with Chuck Grassley, arguably the most popular politician ever to hold office in Iowa. There is not a competitive Republican going against Tom Harkin and John McCain really would like to distance himself from far right wingers like Rep. Steve King and Tom Latham who will in doubt lose more votes than win for McCain.

The last report had her well below Tom Latham, but thats expected.

http://www.fec.gov/DisclosureSearch/HSRefreshCa...

I think that is the link to the FEC.

I think it is all about fundraising and name value at this point in the campaign and I think that Gov. Sebilieus will do a good job of that. Latham made a similar move last month having Minnesota Governor Pawlenty speak on his behalf.

Here is a link to the Greenwald Act Blue site in case you wish to donate.

in Harkin: Dodd should be Obama’s VP choice on The Iowa Independent
007, Okay, I do agree with you on the mortgage thing, but I do think it would help Obama combat in Conn. especially if Liberman was McCain's VP. But like I said before, I dont think it will play too much of a role. I think its a long shot for McCain to have a chance in Conn., he is currently losing by 15 points.

I think the best idea as far as geography will be Kaine of Virgina or Richardson of NM.

in Rural Iowa Obama supporter says smear emails working on The Iowa Independent
"A transcript of King's comments made at a Republican fundraiser in Boulder's Conference Center showed he compared illegal immigrants to stray cats that wind up on people's porches. King said at first stray cats help by chasing mice, so people feed them. King added that the stray cats then have kittens, which are liked for their cuteness, but eventually the strays, fed by the people, end up getting lazy, just like illegal immigrants. King would not comment on what he said on that day" Sioux City Journal 2006

I don't want to disparage anyone because of their race, their ethnicity, their name, whatever the religion of their father might have been." Said Congressman Steven Arnold King in a radio interview March 7th, just before he disparaged Senator Barack Obama's race, ethnicity, name and father's religion. He continued, "I'll just say this, that when you think about the optics of a Barack Obama potentially getting elected president of the United States, I mean, what does this look like to the rest of the world? What does this look like to the world of Islam?... And I will tell you that if he IS elected president, then the radical Islamists, the al Qaida and the radical Islamists and their supporters will be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on September 11th." Specifically regarding Obama's middle name: "It does matter. His middle name does matter. It matters because they read meaning into that and the rest of the world, it has special meaning to them. They'll be dancing in the streets because of his middle name. They'll be dancing in the streets because of who his father was ... So there are implications that have to do with who he is and the positions that he has taken ... There will be dancing in the streets if he's elected president and that has a chilling effect on how difficult it will be to ever win this global war on terror."

Please site your source to the McCain's ex wife having a McCain bumper sticker and not just spew things without sources, peggy.

Just because he admitted that his first marriage was a failure doesnt make it ok. It is very surprising that you defend King, who is for a border fence and John McCain who is for immunity for illegal immigrants. Steven King who is for torture and John McCain who was tortured was against torture and is now for torture. King who is against opening up oil drilling on the contential US and McCain who is for it. King who has been pro-life all his life and McCain who is barely pro-life even know that he is the Republican nominee. King who fought for English as an official language and McCain who opposed it.

hmmm... Is it Barack's middle name, his race or just the "D" in front of his name that makes you so hateful?

in Pawlenty: Obama is risky on The Iowa Independent
Honestly, I am left scratching my head at why someone with such a shady reputation as Gov. Pawlenty would put himself under such a microscope by trash talking the Democratic candidate.

I dont believe he will be taken as the GOP VP, I just think there are too many skeletons in the closet

in Harkin: Dodd should be Obama’s VP choice on The Iowa Independent
Dodd would be a great choice for VP. I dont think it will matter to much in the geographical game, but I think Dodd would be a better VP than many of the people the Republicans are vetting.

Dodd has foreign policy experience, Dodd is a moderate, he shares Obama's christain values, and he really speaks to the needs of Iowans well. I must say that I am first looking out for my state :) but a very good choice none the less.

in Rural Iowa Obama supporter says smear emails working on The Iowa Independent
It is really sad that Republicans have to resort to smearing Obama using racial and anti muslim undertones.

You dont see Obama talking about how John McCain cheated on his first wife and than divorced her when she became disfigured (sounds like a real christian there), or when McCain took bribes from a scam artist who made his living by ripping off the elderly ( keating 5). Or his over the the top lashing out at fellow Republican Senator Chuck Grassley and than kicking him out of the Republican convention.

It makes me sad that the worst Republican in the whole field made it through to the general. Huckabee, Paul, Romney, even Thompson and Gulianni would have made much better presidents than John McCain

in King: Marriage debate will mobilize Iowans for GOP on The Iowa Independent
King has failed the 5th district in creating jobs, lowering taxes, providing better healthcare, reducing crime, drawing in tourists, stopping illegal immigration, advancing highway 20, providing better education and working for small businesses.

The only thing he has left is fear tactics... kinda sad.

in Deployed troops give 6 times more to Obama than McCain on The Iowa Independent
As I listen to McCain's strategy for the war in Iraq, I cant help but imagine a sign at "Joe's Crab Shack" that reads "Free Crab tommorow".

If it is going bad, that is why we should stay. If it is going good, that is why we should stay. When should we leave? In four more years. Sounds very similar to Bush in 04.

I am a veteran of the war in Iraq and I, like many other soldiers have grappled with the redundancy of it all. "Victory" is proclaimed whenever the Republicans can use it and yet is never defined to the men and women serving in Uniform.

Shame on McCain for abandoning his roots.

in William Meyers will not appear on the ballot, but he’s still ‘in this race’ on The Iowa Independent
Although Christopher Reed and I disagree on many issues, I respect him and enjoy his friendship. Reed is a veteran, a true veteran, not someone who served for a couple years in the Marines in England during peacetime and than calls himself a "Hero" and a "Terrorist expert" and calls everyone who disagrees with him a "special interest terrorist" (No, I am not kidding, check his website).

Christopher Reed is an honorable man who has a bright future in Iowa politics, no matter how daunting his task of defeating Harkin looks. He would never associate himself with a nut job like Meyers who occupies most of his day posting under false names on blogs and changing his stance to be against whoever at the moment has made him mad.

Does anyone know who is running against Christopher Rants? I would like to make a donation :)
theposp Christopher Rants (R) of Sioux City will not face an election until 2010 -- half of the Iowa Senate is (re-)elected every 2 years. He was last re-elected in 2006. Given his power and prominence, it will probably take an exceedingly well-qualified opponent to defeat him. With that said, I should disclose that I am fairly & staunchly liberal...I don't know what the dems look like in Woodbury, but maybe you, Steel Medic, could help form a sizable & noticeable opposition to Mr. Rants in 2010? Only time will tell, and there are no term limits in the Iowa Senate.

in Pickens: King should put his money where his mouth is on offshore drilling on The Iowa Independent
I agree with you Randall. Steve King pretty much toes the party line without using any individual judgement and really fails to look out for the interest of the people in his district. The backlash against him is what he had coming. It may even lead to his exit in November.

in William Meyers will not appear on the ballot, but he’s still ‘in this race’ on The Iowa Independent
Wait... It only takes 300 signatures to get on the ballot. So he is left without enough time to get these signatures?? I have a hard time believing that. If he was really serious, he would have been able to collect these in a week at the very most. In addition, how does he know that changes wont be made? The election is over, there wont be another primary for 2 years, and the people that William is depending on to make changes ever so quickly are running for office themselves.

I am 100 percent sure that if William recieved word from Tom Harkin that he would work to help change things, Tom meant it. However things cannot be changed over night by the Democratic party in a swing state during the last 90 days of the most important election in state history. Have some patience William.

in King says he’s running out of ‘other cheeks’ with some media on The Iowa Independent
Peggy,
To put things in perspective, in these last 8 months since the Iowa Caucus Senator Barack Obama has been called every name in the book, from rascist to sexist to muslim extremist and yet he does not shy away from interviews and debates. Steve King has shown a cowardice that is not suitable for any man, much less a leader of men, and that sin is unforgiveble

Steve King has made MANY racist remarks and now that they have come back to bite him, he turns coward and runs away. He will most likely win the Fifth district even if drops off the face of the earth, but Hubler is going to make this race a margin of single digits when it should be 25+%. And Republicans arent happy that there major base of support (The Fifth) is being lead by the most unpopular man in Iowa.

King has aspirations for the governorship or a senate seat in 2010, but he has now made it a pipe dream, he will be lucky if he is not challenged for the party ticket to his own seat in 2010 by Christopher Rants or another one of the prominent Republicans in the Fifth... That is if he can hold on to his seat until then.

in Newcomer or not, Miller-Meeks confident she’d do well in Congress on The Iowa Independent
She seems to have pretty good ideas and would garner a lot of support as a moderate, but since she is in the Republican party she will not be able to vote for her district, she will have to vote with the party.
Its a sad thing.
At least with Loebsack the people of the 2nd district have a vote for them, and not just the party

in VoteVets hopes to make politics in Iowa friendlier to veterans on The Iowa Independent
There are, by there very nature, more Democratic veterans than Republicans. Being as most Republicans are willing to send many people to there death for there country and Democrats are willing to fight to the death to save there country.

A list of Republican Veterans running juxtaposed against Democratic Veterans running is something I would like to see.

in Vets for Freedom seeks to rebuild support for war on The Iowa Independent
Obama does support finishing the war in Iraq/Afghanstan. He just doesnt support staying in for the next hundred years. John McCain has said himself that he doesnt care if it takes 100 years! How is this "Ending the war?". Obama knows that our focus should be on Afghanastan and what should have been the main concern of American intervention "To capture Bin Laden and hunt down the terrorists responsible for 9-11". No more blank check for the Iraqi government, no more welfare for the people of Iraq, it is time they stand on there own, as we did in 1776, and achieve there own indpendence.

As for this group. I still see nothing Bi-Partisan about them. I see them attacking Obama based on smear ads and lies that have been put out by the McCain campaign. If you would take a closer look at Mr. McCain, you may be surprised.

McCain, a victim of torture, has been admently against torture... until he won the nomination.

McCain also said that Afghanastan should be our main focus... until he won the nomination.

What will he change next?
