I've been a staff writer at the PT for nearly 10 years, and frankly, the latest round of cuts come as little surprise. Editorial staff has been slashed more than 80 percent during my tenure, and that was AFTER MediaNews thoroughly gutted the operation following the Knight Ridder sale in '97(perhaps you recall that bloodbath Dave?). As a Guild rep, it saddens me to see yet more of my colleagues discarded into the wastebin (or toilet) masquerading as the U.S. economy in this Year of our Lord 2009. As a career journalist, I ponder the grim choices facing the growing legion of unemployed writers and photographers, many of whom will likely be forced to decide between soul-stealing corporate PR gigs, infrequent and low-paying freelance assignments or starvation (for the true artistes among us). And as a resident, I mourn the loss of another community watchdog. Tough times indeed.

Could it be Mayor Foster is ill-prepared to venture beyond his talking points and go toe-to-toe with one of the many L.B. residents who oppose this Measure I vague scheme?

Moxley does it again. Cox oozes greed. I remember a stopover at Long Beach Airport Marriott once where they were already priming him for the gig ("he's a financial genius") - a year before he was appointed, or should I say, annoited.

Food for thought: Sex offenders and political lobbyists are the only people legally mandated in California to register their names, addresses and activites with the state.

There's nothing wrong with Long Beach helping these workers get a bigger slice of the pie. In fact, it's the moral thing to do.
I am for learning English though. You should be able to communicate at least marginally in your adopted country.

Perhaps he was he pre-occupied promoting his "dinosaur flatulence" global-warming theory to the neo-cons around Capitol Hill?

This guy's gotta be one of the all-time biggest do-nothings to walk the halls of Congress. Voters, please get out there this November and send this guy packing. I can't think of a single major accomplishment he's achieved on behalf of Long Beach residents in his 19 years in office.

I've always found Suja to be a competent and honest representative. As a voter and resident, I couldn't care less about her love life as long as she keeps fighting for good things.

I believe Cordero is now the commission's treasurer (not VP), making him the lowest-ranking member of the board until Foster appoints someone to replace Doris. Of course, all members are "equals" unless you count the travel perks afforded to the president and VP...

If those birds were the only thing standing in the way of sinking that breakwater, I'd personally snipe each and every one of 'em...

Love these anti-subsidy conservatives. They go outta there way every election cycle to scapegoat welfare moms, but somehow always seem to forget about the multi-billion-dollar breaks going to their capitalist heroes in big business. I'm all for a free market, but let's cut the bullshit guys.

Actually, it was Foster (backed by the Chamber) who sabotaged the city council's support of hotel workers. He used a rare veto to kill the council's "labor-peace" measure in early '07.
He then sided up with Chamber interests again this year to crush the Teamster-led effort to organize port truck drivers.

Check out www.lbsurfrider.org. Let's sink this breakwater and restore the shore in Long Beach. Wealthy Peninsula residents shouldn't be holding the rest of Long Beach hostage so they can enjoy slightly cheaper flood insurance premiums.
