On a related note, Google won't make the same mistake as Coke and offer "New Coke" due to the increased efforts of MSFT. Goog realizes that the competition on a better search product could come from other places (for instance, a real-time twitter search). It will be exciting watching this all play out...

in Angry Blogger Says Blogs Are Dead on Social Times
It all depends on your goal... I would agree that becoming the next Scoble is not going to happen. However, if you are looking to communicate with other folks around the world on a niche topic of mutual interest and passion --- by all means.
Overall, one size doesn't fit all. Some may blog or utilize other digital tools. Bottom Line - in most instances, participating in some kind of social media is better than sitting on the sidelines.

in Can Anybody Compete With Facebook & MySpace on Mobile? on Social Times
Excellent post Nick...
I share your view that Facebook and MySpace are the market leaders here and will be tough to beat. On a related note, the Blackberry application for Facebook has already been downloaded over 2 million times in a year. As we see more corporate folks with Blackberrys embrace social communications, Facebook's lead will continue to grow.

Jerry,
I think you'll find twitter to be quite useful in a number of ways. On that note, it is the best - in terms of subs - mobile social networking platform right now.

in Silicon Valley headed for political trouble? on Scobleizer
As you may recall, we discussed this briefly at VON in San Jose last year. I started blogging so folks that love wireless can see what the lawmakers are doing on wireless policy.
The wireless industry doesn't have the heavy-handed regs that the wireline companies have. The result has been good for consumers and companies. However, many lawmakers think mobile phones just make calls and they only know the old circuit-switched days and common carrier regulation...

Carriers are absolutely at a fork in the road. I am hopeful that they will choose to "figure it out" and collaborate with others in order to be in nysc with us... The future is bright...

in Wireless Whining on The Technology Liberation Front
Carriers have an ETF to get some ROI on the consumer (cost per gross add) and the carrier subsidizes the cost of the handset. With the iPhone, its hard to argue that at $600 a pop with a substantial service plan (you are going to want the full functionality of the device) and you can't take the phone to another carrier -- that the ETF is necessary... On that note, you will see the biz model evolve over time. If folks are willing to pay over $500 on a phone - no longer a need for the ETF (VZ already prorates).
