in Wine Lovers, Listen up! I Love Beer! on Catavino
I will vouch for Ryan's store with it's 1,000 beers but I only got to 134 so I will have to take his word for the remaining 1266. However, there is an article in the May issue of All About Beer that pits a wine drinker - Marnie Olds - vs. a bee man - Sam Calagione to a debate about which - beer or wine - is best and which goes best with food. A fun article with both scoring points - thought the beer lovers of Catavino might find this of interest.
Also, they have a listing of the 125 Places to Have a Beer before you die (from all over the world). Based on the contents and comments found in this post this will not come as a surprise but with what seems like every country on globe getting at least one "Place" mentioned, Spain does not show up even one time on this lengthy list . Why even Zanzibar, Moscow and the Happy Gnome from St. Paul, MN (close to Ryan's home town) even makes the list!!
Sounds like a business opportunity exists in Spain.

in What is the Etymology of La Rioja? on Catavino
I like the pilgrims crossing the river theory - if for no other reason than I can probably remember that one. Beside being named after bread eating invaders who crossed some irony soil just doesn't sound very romantic.

in Tomatoes with your Wine - What do you like? + a Bonus Story! on Catavino
Ryan - Loved your writing! I can remember that day as if it was yesterday. You were covered in tomato juice and it was a thrill to see you enjoy it so much.
I spent three days going thru boxes of slides to find the picture of you eating the tomato with Grandpa A. and it beought back untold memories.....I remember when your dad went to Georgia right after our honeymoon for basic training. After 6 weeks he finally came home. The very first thing after hugs and kisses we headed to grnadpas place, pulled up the driveway, parked and before even saying hi to his mother and father he pulled a salt shaker out of his pocket and headed into the garden, sat down and ate a couple of tomatoes with the biggest smile on his face!! Ahh, the power of a red juicy fresh off the vine tomatoe - transports you to another world!!
Bruschetta is never the same unless made with a juicy fresh tomato!!! Gotta go, a tomato is calling my name for a big juicy BLT for dinner....

in Wine Awards, Categories Without Contestants and the Birth of the Wine Blog Atlas on Catavino
I think this is a great idea. As a interested but casual drinker of wine I would appreciate having a site that would provide a listing of specific blogs that are dedicated to a specfic wine/region/style that I want to try. Doing the current search process ends up with way too many sites to try to sift through to find one that really focuses on a region or type of wine and can provide specific information to help me become more knowledgeable. While there are others as you mention, Catavino is a good example of a wine blog that is meeting my need for information about Spanish and Portuguese wines.
