How do you think widgets play into the lifestream? We are seeing a huge amount of widget views in FB feeds with the new design. Think SNL Palin/Fey skit.

What do you think of disqus now?

Theo
Hey, Hooman. I think it's an interesting service. But for the average blogger (me) with the same 5 or 6 people that follow their blog, the realized gain from Disqus is minimal. The value of Disqus for a blogger is to bring more people into conversations started from their blog. Sure, if you blog about an original topic that is controversial, you might find utility in Disqus. Otherwise, the commenting system that comes with any blog software will suit you just fine. This single-sign-on discussion system is a turn off for many people. One of the most powerful motivators of internet discussions is the anonymity of the user. You mean I can say what I want and don't have to be held accountable? In that case, I'll be honest!
As a discussion participant, it's nice to be able to track your comments across all the sites you visit. But for me, most of those sites are not using Disqus so I personally haven't realized that benefit.

in Where are all the video startups? Maybe Content=King, online and offline on Futuristic Play by @Andrew_ChenQDub has an interesting point. People only remember a couple brands for a given product. In the current model, people associate shows with a particular network. That being said, if most people map a website to a tv channel, then his argument makes sense. What it also tells you, however, is that other video sites could be in trouble if that is the positioning that users are comfortable with.

in How Is Facebook Worth $15 Billion? on AllFacebook
Nick, I like those thoughts as well. This is a fun topic. The e-commerce spin is something FB definitely could bring a unique advantage too as well. Like I said, I think there are a number of ways that they can move to serious revenue generation. Regardless of the strategy they ultimately follow though, it seems that time is of the essence. Hope all is well man.

in Facebook Beacon Drama Continues on AllFacebook
PaidContent has a pretty interesting related post on how Coke and other advertisers are pulling out of the program. I think the jury is still out on the Facebook Ad Programs, but the road is definitely going to be rocky for a bit.

I wonder if Beacon is going to be Newsfeed 2.0. People hated and reviled it at first, but later it managed to gain acceptance and become part of the Facebook experience.

shouldn't be if the hatred lasts that long.

in Facebook Apps or Widgets, Which Are Better? on AllFacebook
Nick, I recently posted on this as well - there is definitely a distinction between the two. That being said, the distinction is becoming murky.
I think that widgets are a more effective breadth strategy today given that only one platform really supports social applications - Facebook.
Social applications require a deeper investment than widgets in many cases, so my guess is that the two markets diverge and grow together. There will be many intersecting cases, but that's my thinking...

This is Clearspring's first step towards a broader FB integration. With our simple wizard, Flash widget creators can extend programs easily into Facebook without having to learn FBML. Widgets run through this process will also auto-magically have a page created to enable viral distribution through the social graph. Any suggestions on how to improve are welcome. Thanks!

Nick, thanks for the mention. If you, or your readers hear anything from Facebook Devs, or other application developers on how we can improve this service let us know. We have some big stuff underway w/FB and we are excited to learn from their community!

Ben, I think that there are definitely going to be ways to determine the effect associated with content syndication. At Clearspring, we are working with folks like the Colts to understand what the right metrics are to quantify that efficacy. Clearly it is a tough problem, but analytics such as views, locations, click through, and viral hub points can really help. Lots to do in this area, but my guess is that some meat and potatoes solutions can start to shed some light on things.

This is an absolutely phenomenal move. My personal opinion is that this is indicative of a much larger trend. Many major destinations, be they social networks, blogs, or start pages, are starting to move towards a new information architecture - the aggregator.
I'm thinking more about the other side of the coin - widgets in the river of
content. I think there will continue to be a place for some widgets in the
sidebar - but I think the vast majority will need to find a way to get into
the flow, into the river. Fred Wilson talked about this a while back at the
WidgetWebExpo conference. And it's not just widgets - ads need to get into
the river too. As of today, no ad network (that I'm aware of) offers a
format that works nicely in a social media river (feed). I've been bugging
the good people at AdSense about it with no luck so far.
Can you point me to an example of the SNL skit in the river on FB?
