Hey! I like it, but I have one little note. It is not intuitively obvious how to get to the rest of the story. Some blogs use the word "More..." or some variation of that. It wasn't until I clicked on the post name that I realized that there really was more.

Otherwise - I really like it.

I spent half my morning looking at potential new themes for one of my blogs, then installed at least 8 of them, played around with a few tweaks, ditched 7 of them and starting rebuilding my sidebars.

What was I thinking? I have paying client work to be doing....

OMG Jason - I may never eat most of those foods again! I remember the smell of Marmite as a kid. My parents used to put it on toast in the morning and I couldn't bear the smell. I saw it on the shelf at World Market today and almost bought my Mom a jar.

And Slim Jims - ewwww. Keep posting facts like these and we'll all be on an organic, whole foods diet before you know it.

Sid - I came to the same conclusion about housekeeping. It takes me 8 hours to clean my house top to bottom and I hate every minute of it. However, I pay a cleaning service to do the same job $100 every two weeks. They send two very professional ladies who take 90 minutes to do a great job.

It takes less time to maintain it during the week and everyone loves a clean house. My biggest skeptic - my husband - is now the biggest fan of the plan.

I could outsource cooking next and that would be fine with me too.

#3 is the one I struggle with year after year after year. Why can't I ever learn? I make a pact with myself each year, yet I just can't get that part of my business working the way I want it to.

#1 is a lesson I think I have finally learned this year. Sometimes it feels good to say that someone is just not a good match for being a client.

Another very valuable lesson I learned is don't be afraid to ask for help. If you run into a stumbling block, have a question about how to make something work, or screw something up, post a plea for help. You will be amazed at the number of bloggers who will gladly run to your aid and be will to teach you in the process.

And when it comes to blogging (and other aspects of life) the more you give the more you receive - whether its links, comments, advice, or traffic.

I agree - design does matter and modifying Wordpress (or Blogger or TypePad) themes is a great way to learn CSS/HTML/PHP.

My recommendation. My back ups of all your originals, then start playing. Make one change at a time though. It is easy to make a change, publish, review and repeat.

Great post! Step #1 worked very well for me. Actually, when I made the switch to being a freelancer, my first two clients were my two most recent employers.

If you are planning on making the switch or have recently done so - print this post out and put it in a very obvious place in your office - and refer to it often as this is all very sound advice.

Take the time to visit a few blogs regularly. Add to the conversation and start to develop the key relationships. Then continue those relationships at Twitter and using other social networking tools.

Once your online relationships start to grow, get a blog buddy! Someone who is on the same general path as you. Help each other out by sharing tips, promoting each others posts, and acting as sounding boards for each other.

And most of all be patient. Developing relationships, traffic and blog authority takes time. Enjoy the process!

All of the reasons above are valid reasons for letting a client go. I have let a client go (gradually over time) for a combination of slow, then no-pay; ridiculous turn around time expectations and poor client effort.

Actually, poor client involvement is another reason to release a client. I can't help a client if they are unresponsive, don't know what they want or need, and expect me to pull things out of thin air. If I ask them for a vital piece of their web site copy, input or other information and they can't meet their own self-imposed deadlines, it does not bode well for the project.

This is one of the reasons we moved to the house we are in. We live on 4 acres, on a quiet dead end street, we have a driveway alarm and a big dog. The best part is that I can tell my kids to go outside and play without having to watch their every move.

I remember riding my bike EVERYWHERE as a kid. No cell phones, no nothing.
