in The suits vs. the geeks on Scobleizer
LayZ: Sigh. You're probably right. Although I will say the Mercedes guy was much more receptive to me than the BMW guy.

Adam: I do almost agree on people now not dressing up ever. BTW: Remember when air travel was something one dressed *up* for? OK, some of you may not be old enough to remember that, but it's true!

Wow, I had the exact opposite reaction of Sam Simon.

A few years back at the peak of my corporate, well-paid, pre-bootstrapping start-up days I wanted to get a new car. I went to all the dealers: BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, Audi, etc. etc. etc.

BMW, without question, treated me the worst, and I gave them three chances. Each time they were condescending, dismissive, rude.

My mother asked me, "Well, how were you dressed?" The answer is: in sweats and a pony tail, but the bigger answer was: I don't feel I should have to dress up to "let" someone sell me a 40K car.

I will never ever buy a BMW.

The thought that in Silicon Valley they couldn't realize that I might just be able to pull out my checkbook and drive off the lot with that car fully paid astounded me.

The two most respectful dealers? Respectful about talking to me, not my boyfriend. Respectful about my desire for no leather interiors because I'm a vegan. Respectful enough to talk horsepower and engine size, not vanity mirrors. For me it was Audi and Volvo. I got the Audi.

in Fun on the TechRanch let’s send Jen to BlogHer; BillingsBloggerBreakfast on Scobleizer
Robert: thanks for sending her BlogHer's way!

IdealBite is one of my regular reads.

Jen should know that the folks over at Minti have a couple of extra full passes for BlogHer that they're looking to give away:

Also might want to point her to the Room & Ride Share Forum here:

in One wish for 2006… on Scobleizer
Just last night my S.O. was showing me how he was working on adapting an online reference manual for an open source project he works on, so it would look better on mobile devices. I gave him a PSP for Xmas, and it inspired him.

I actually asked him: wouldn't someone who needed to look up something about this programming language be working on his or her computer at the time?

He thought it was a good idea anyway, you know because some people actually read manuals, not just refer to them when they have a problem.

I'm going to send him your post, so he feels all validated :)

(And yes, you're right: it was New Year's Eve, and we were home having that conversation. We're both sick, as in with colds. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

in Scoble’s a tool, blogger cries on Scobleizer
Robert, you may have missed the point of my post.

I was merely pointing out that the article had a very narrow scope, but you criticized it as though it purported to be something else entirely. In my opinion your critique was misleading, especially since I'm sure you probably could have ripped the article apart for valid reasons if you had tried.

In addition, I didn't really make a call on what I think of blogging policies. But plenty of bloggers insist it's unfair to fire a blogger for blogging (if you believe that's ever the real reason) if there are no blogging policies in place. So, I was making the point that we can't have it both ways...complain that actions aren't warranted without policies, but then complain if a company tries to set policies. (I tend to be among those who think that people get fired for what they express thru the channel of blogging, not for the blogging itself, and that therefore the same rules apply to corporate citizenship on a blog or not on a blog.)

Post-Mark-Jen-firing you wrote some posts that, if not positive on blogging policy establishment, were at least neutral. So it seems to me your opinion may have evolved, and I missed it.

Sorry about that, but I think my observations on the nature of your critique still hold water.

in March, month of Web Conferences on Scobleizer
My vote:
Conferences should provide an official backchannel, so everyone at the conference and unable to attend can have the info to log in and aprticipate.

Conference should not project that backchannel behind or next to speakers. As an attendee I find it rude, distracting, uninteresting and not what I came for. Projecting it makes it part of the programming, so unless you publicize that it's going to be there (so I can be sure to make my decision whether to attend or not with that parameter in mind) you are doing some portion of the people who chose to attend a disservice.

in The Sexual Politics of Meat on Elliott Back's Blog
Actually Dr. Adams book was published years ago. It's quite interesting. The basic concept is that the more patriarchal (or male-dominated) a society, the more likely they are to be heavy meat-eating societies. Further, she discusses the techniques we use to mentally separate meat, in the form most of us eat it, from the animal it came from...and how the techniques are similar to ways such a society uses language and imagery to keep women on a lower strata than men.

I haven't read it in years, so my memory is sketchy, but that's the gist as I recall. I wish you had gone. I would be fascainted to see wat you took away from it.

No, what I meant was: Michelle Branch on the left, Joss Stone on the right.

I think it may be Michelle Branch. And are you sure that's Jessica Simpson? I think it may be Joss Stone. Both those women are on his just-released album, but Jessical Simpson is not.
