I want to find my first tweet for a blog post, but since you posted this Twitter has crippled the paging and limited it to the most recent 10 pages of tweets. Too bad. I'm sure this tip will work again... if (when) Twitter ever gets its act together.

Re: Ads in Twitter streams? Haven't been spending enough time there lately due to other things that need to get done (*cough* stupid real life *cough*).

After reading his article, I'm a little closer to getting why he's famous (being an RSS advocate, not to mention a fan of the Tablet PC, would get him love from the geek crowd). This is almost like figuring out why people Angelina Jolie or [insert name of pop celebrity here]; you don't know who the person is unless you're active or interested in the field in which they are famous. For me, I have no idea who just about any popular musician or film actor is, which shows my incredible geekery. Or not, since I don't know who Scoble is. (Though my own doesn't, so who am I to talk?) Anyway, I think I should talk a little more about this subject.

I have a sort of bubble, too, just like Jake. In my bubble, people like Jimmy Wales (founder of Wikipedia), Kevin Fox (former UI designer at Google), and Paul Buchheit (the original developer of Gmail) are small-time celebrities, and a lot of people I talk to don't know who they are at all. It's only natural, I guess, that someday, someone would talk about someone I've never really understood all the hype about. Scoble has been that person for me, and Jake was the one who mentioned him.

On the plus side of this, I now know something about who Robert Scoble is.

Re: Do You Know Robert?

@Jake: lol! Mail is pretty bad (I get spam there even though I have never even told anyone I have an account there). Hotmail is really annoying because Microsoft spams you with their own junk and makes it a requirement for service. (I don't use my Yahoo! or Hotmail addresses anyway; They're just there for identity preservation.)

@ChrisRowell: I can't speak for my dad, but my mom is pretty suspicious of anything she gets that doesn't have a name she knows attached to it. She even catches stuff that purports to be from herself. Phishing and spam are both lost on the two of us. My dad has a spam filter in Outlook, but I don't know if he ever reads the messages or if any make it to his Inbox. People click the result, see it's Blog*Spot, and hit Back, like Steve says he does in comment 3. There is, of course, the question of: "How will changing my domain after a year and a half affect my search engine presence?" But if it leads to lower bounce rates and more readers, I'd gladly undergo the Google Transition Period. Sorry if this is bordering (or just flat-out) off-topic, but any thoughts? I'm pretty sure Blogger sets up correct 301 redirects to properly transfer PageRank and all that.

Re: 5 Steps: How Not to Look Like a Spam Blog

Just as a response to @Recording Studio: Not only do I have lots of visits through Google, but countless links from Google Groups postings that I put in my signature. That redirection is definitely the way to go; I'm glad Blogger supports it. But I am nervous that when I move I'll lose a lot of traffic. I don't have ads or anything to generate revenue on the site, but I don't think I could stand writing to a vacuum again like it was when I started blogging.

But enough of my whining. ;-) Good luck launching your site!

And this will probably be lost to the wind, but is there any chance of you launching OpenID support, Jonathan? Spreading spam around just makes the world a more annoying place to Internet. I am happy to be considered one of those "few blogs that are hosted on Blogspot" you consider legitimate. (Does 1,400 visits a month count as popular? I'm not so sure... But I appreciate the compliment. :-) )

If Google were to spend more time actively looking for splogs, or make it easier to flag a blog as spam (the navbar, with its button, is altogether too easy to hide), or even tighten the ToS so splogs are less legitimate under the rules of the hosting site... The world would probably be a better place for it.

All the more reason to get myself a real domain name, I guess. If I do that, I can start putting other services on it as well; custom domains seem to be the latest trend in free amenities.

Google Groups does seem to have a large amount of spam going on, too. It's gotten to the point of being ridiculous.

PS:
Yes, I know it's been days since the last comment, but the comment tracker I use has apparently been slacking on its checks lately... Both of you are awesome people. I am, of course, taking Justin's description of you, but there's no way you could not fit what he says. :)

Re: Has Microsoft caught up to Google in search?

I actually used to use Live Search, back when it was still MSN Search. (What a stupid re-branding they did with that "Live" crap.) I also used to use IE6. I shunned Google and Firefox.

One day I realized I was using Firefox and searching with Google. I haven't gone back since.

That was two years ago. When I started using Firefox full-time, the version number started with 1.5.

In the months and years following that, I have since switched completely from Outlook email to Gmail. I have been constantly adding more Google services to my account as they are released, and I absolutely loathe Hotmail as it is now. (What's up with the required advertisements? Notice how Google doesn't do any of that? No ads in your inbox, no taglines, nothing.)

Since the switch, I haven't really tried Microsoft's search sites. I know my dad uses them (because he uses IE7 and it's built in and he doesn't know either that it's possible to change it or how to do so). But I refuse to.

Re: The Ultimate Social Media Etiquette Handbook

I especially agree about the thing against posting comments on blogs as a website or company, or posting barely-relevant comments just so you can link to your own sites. Often, users will be blocked or deleted with no indication as to what exactly they did wrong. I myself got an email from Orkut stating that my account had been deactivated because "it violated our Terms of Use and/or image upload guidelines." However, there was no pointer to what exactly I'd done wrong, and I couldn't possibly imagine what it could be as I hadn't touched that profile in months. (Never mind the fact that it wasn't actually deactivated - the next time I logged in, it was intact - that's a totally different topic.)
