in What do you want? on A Passion For 'Puters
No, I don't think that is out of scope. I'd consider that more of a meta-direction. While I'm writing my specific details, I can keep in mind that this is a possible use of the report - something for me to think about while I'm writing it. Thanks, Jodie!

in A new project for me! on A Passion For 'Puters
Ohhh! Ladies, that is an excellent idea! I've barely started the planning process, but when I get as far as having chapter headings set up, I'll do that. I love my social network!!!

in Busy Wednesday! on A Passion For 'Puters
Mike called home tonight and suggested he pick up a pizza on the way home - so I didn't have to cook, at least! It was crazy busy - and I even left some stuff out that I'm going to have to go in and add as an update...

Mel is our ILL Librarian & it was her computer that was giving me the Javascript error when she tried to print from OCLC. I'm still awaiting word from them that it's been fixed...

Thank you Cliff - I know you introduced her properly, but I never did hear her name clearly - and didn't know where she worked, either!

Margaret - I'm walking enough to offset the clotted cream. There aren't enough hours in the day - even if I walked all of them - to offset the fact that we're getting dessert at every meal and the food that they are serving is RICH. I'll make up for it in London, though. No more desserts when I have to pay for them myself!
Tab - sorry - that is a seriously difficult song to get rid of!

in 1. Twitter on A Passion For 'Puters
Jeff - thanks for the link to your twitter account! I knew about you all, but couldn't remember exactly what the name of your library was... As for the mass of information, that's something I worry about with our Twitter stream - for people who JUST want Bookmobile notices, they don't care when any of the other announcements come out. I've considered splitting the announcements up into separate Twitter accounts - one for Bookmobile stuff, one for press releases and other announcements of programs, etc., with all of them feeding into a single "mothership" twitter account as well. That way people could decide what they want.
We don't twitter our books, however, so I may be completely uninformed about this - but splitting out the books into genres may ease the noise factor. This may not be possible with your workflow, but it's one way to handle overloading folks if it is possible!

in Library 2.0 debate on A Passion For 'Puters
Perhaps it's not as much a debate (after re-reading the posts I had originally thought *were* debating the issue) as a series of clarifying responses. Most agree with Kate Sheehan's original assessment, but there are a few posts out there that take the arguments made by John Blyberg and Kate and expand upon them (Merideth Farkas being a quick example that I can put my hands on right now). That's not so much a debate as an expansion on a single point that she didn't entirely agree with.

It's Stephen Hawkings! Even when the subject matter requires some whiskey (and what subject matter doesn't, really?), he manages to make it accessible.

in Followup to PLE post on A Passion For 'Puters
I fixed the link - thanks for the heads up... I really liked the idea of the mixed environments you mentioned in your post - the work/learning/recreation stuff all mixed together. It's pretty much how I live - I work in the same place and on the same machine at which I play. After reading all these mentions of PLEs, the more integrated approach you laid out really seemed to work for me!

in library chicken: computer frustrations on A Passion For 'Puters
I believe that others have - I know that the PLCMC making theirs available to the public - but I'm not sure how much they are "inviting" them to participate. We're hoping for a good turnout of patrons!!

It wouldn't have caught my attention quite so well if it wasn't funny! But yes, I guess I didn't mention the fact that it was quite humorous in my post. My bad!

I'm pretty sure this is spammy, but I wanted to post it just in case anyone else had that question. I have no problem with allowing my posts to be republished - with appropriate credit and links back to this site included. If you are putting it behind a paywall, I expect some sort of compensation - otherwise, just linking back here will be compensation enough. That's the policy, folks!

in Trapped by our ILS on What I Learned Today...
I'd love to be able to use Koha, but getting non-technical people to buy into the idea of an open source catalog has been very difficult. I know that Koha is being used in some libraries - though I got the impression that they were smaller - but I've not seen an example of a large library using it yet. I'll be keeping an eye out on this post, though, for comments!!
