It's funny how our expectations (and in my case, my level of snarkiness) rise over time. Five years ago I would've been happy just to be able to get Windows Media Player to work. When I switched over to the iTunes ecosystem, I definitely became a bit spoiled. -PS

Re: A Mini-Rant About Firefox

Good points, Jeff. I especially like the one about it being important to the code, but not necessarily to the user.

Re: The Desktop & File/Folder Metaphors - Broken

Cool, thanks for the link Patrick! I'll check out the article today.

Re: I Can’t Believe My Car Radio Makes Me Press And Hold The Power Button While Driving

@koz, yeah, but...that's my whole point: why did the designers combine the power and mode button? It's not a good idea. If they had separated them, they wouldn't have had to make the power button a 3-second press and hold, and therefore wouldn't have caused a safety issue.

As for the mute button...point taken. But it's not really findable by touch. So it's not salient.

And I don't agree about pulling over to power off. I think that's an apologist position; a car radio should be designed to be powered off while driving. Make a phone call is a different matter. That should be done while stationary.

Re: My Mostly Easy, Redundant But Not Completely Automated Mac Backup Scheme

That's a good suggestion, thanks Kjartan! I will look into Mozy.

By the way, the USB/NAS drives I use are the Simpletech Simpleshare drive, and the NexStar LX NAS drive. So far they've worked well, no complaints.

Re: Should Users Be “Shielded” From The Linux Command Line?

OK, you guys have pretty much convinced me. You're right that motivation is a factor; motivated & advanced users will seek out the entry points & find them. -Paul

Re: “Please Enter A Valid Email Address”

Excellent points, and I certainly appreciate the perspective!
