in Another Stroke of Genius on Matthew Ebel
what i found interesting is how on just the 2nd day of its release, the genius playlist was already associating other podsafe music with mine. that meant a lot of podcast listeners were probably checking it out. as people use the genius function more data is associated with the various songs and bands they play. so the more fans of our music that use it, the more we'll be represented. if i understand it correctly, anyway... i've actually tried to use songs that came back with an error message that there wasn't enough data associated with it yet, so i think that backs up my assumption. perhaps mr. penn knows more about it? he knows everything!

in Another BMI Check (That’s #2 if you’re counting.) on Matthew Ebel
congrats once again. ryan just got his check, but mine is still forthcoming. actually, we do direct deposit but they send us the paperwork detailing who paid what. its cool now to see the first last.fm payments coming in! also getting some pandora and imeem. of course it's usually like 1 cent per play, but i guess it all adds up doesn't it? :P

yeah, you have some good points, girl. google is only convenient if it works and we all wonder a little bit about the privacy issue. i can't imagine going back to my mail app, but maybe i should give it another try?

in Where Are The Musicians? on Matthew Ebel
the fans do like signed cds, as lovespirals can attest to! some like to actually read the album credits, as well, which itunes et al cannot provide. i think digital sales are best when you only want 1 song from an album, but if you want the whole album, you should take the time to buy the physical product.

as far as all these conversations about music from non musicians, sheesh! there are so many different permutations in the music industry it is silly to try and give one model. i mean, sure there are some bands that make a living from tours, but others that go broke putting on tours, and still others that don't tour at all.

in my case, lovespirals is really a recording project, not a live performance band. we buy expensive gear to create our albums, then spend a lot of money pressing the cds, so there really isn't a lot of money left over to tour on when we're done. we need to sell the finished product to pay off our credit cards. if i were independently wealthy, i'd probably be happy to give it all away free, but i'm far from rich...

anyway, who knows what kind of band would end up on TWIT or what their scenario would be like. doubtless they could not represent every type of musical act in the solar system.

nobody is ever ready to turn 30, baby girl, but i think you'll find it isn't so bad. looks like you're well on your way to wisdom and hey - still got a decade til you turn 40!

in Why Bother Blogging Podcasting and Using Social Networks on Chris Brogan
dude, podcasting is soooo 2004.

j/k!

i'm sure there are plenty of folks out there who are perfectly happy with their lives not being on twitter, facebook, ustream etc etc...

i personally enjoy keeping up with tech and internet trends, as any good aquarian would. seems like i keep finding cooler and more convenient ways to do what i was already doing, without going to a physical building, mailing packages, making phone calls and the like.

btw, your pnme comment about single handedly destroying the environment with all your travel plans cracked me up. who accuse you of that again?

in Flee The Fishbowl and Re-EMBED in Reality on Chris Brogan
sorry i'm a bit late to the party, chris, but i've been out and about in the "real world" this week. :P

my passion has always been music, not only making it, but discovering other's music and sharing it. podcasting has been the perfect medium for me to do what i love best. my first podcast was created to help promote my band, lovespirals, but i quickly found that i could help other bands through our experiences.

starting my music podcast, the chillcast, opened up new avenues to get involved. there's the obvious promotion of new releases, of course, but i've found that artist feature interviews and even just contests are making a big impact for the artists. plus, as my show reaches a wider audience, it draws in more recording artists to the concept of podcasting. not only have i been able to help small bedroom bands get their music onto the internet and heard on podcasts, but i've inspired major label artists, like lol tolhurt, to start their own podcasts.

i often wonder how many folks from outside the fishbowl are hearing about my podcasts, since most comments come from my peers, but i feel confident that as time goes on, more and more music fans will be discovering the joy of podcasts through the bands that are featured on the shows. some of the people that come to hear their favorite band are bound to stick around for future episodes. and when they do stick around, they'll start learning about the wonderful world of "underground" music and "podsafe music" and everything that goes along with that.

mmm... now i crave ice cream, chris!

love your michelle branch story. every band should pray for fans as cool as you. :)

as for cdbaby vs amazon, i agree that amazon sucks - but why not sell on both? unfortunately, many sites are a bit amazon-centric, like pandora. plus, folks that aren't as web savvy as we will often trust amazon over cdbaby just because it's a household name.

that being said, i bag on amazon advantage all the time on the chillin' with lovespirals podcast. ;)

i sell our cds in any and every site and service i can, just to be sure we cast the widest net.

keep up the great work, ninja! we indie bands appreciate it.

love--
