Very true. That is why I like to take a holistic look at my investments sometimes. Real estate including your primary residence can be something that is very easy to be overweighted in without realizing it.

How about a 14.5% raise every year (avg.). That is what holders of this run-of-the-mill portfolio would have received from 1997-2007. Blatant plug for my blog below...sorry couldn't resist....

I read this book a few years ago.

The book is pretty decent for a basic understanding of personal finance and investing. It lacks detail and refinement in several areas, and reminds me too much of the Dr. Phil 'comon sense' approach that Bach is famous for. He is a pretty good marketer, I'll give him that...
