I highly recommend his various books and websites (Google him!), as well as his blog diseaseproof.com. The really great thing is that he backs up ALL his recommendations with an extensive list of peer-reviewed medical studies. Great to show your doctor when they come to you with clueless questions.

There are some videos of him at vegsource.com, in one he talks about how he was invited to talk about diabetes because the drug companies didn't want him!

You are right though--it's an uphill battle with MDs, we can't wait for them to catch up!

Re: Raw Abroad, 7 travel tips to make your trip the best ever

Thoughts on vaccines? I would add a question I've been putting out for myself... How do I get to the point where I do not desire to overeat, that it is undesirable and uninteresting (people may substitue their own vices)? So that it is a matter of feeling good, and not a matter of discipline? I was able to go veg and vegan without feeling restricted or that it was a matter of will...but I still use food as a form of entertainment and it is very dulling (I know from when I have fasted).

I keep overeating eating on the weekends, I suppose because I can, because a part of me enjoys it, because I've gained just a few pounds so am still slim (even if my poor stomach is stuffed, and the weight gain will add up). So, how to I get to a place where I register as full , and don't want to eat more?

No answers, only questions

Re: Uninformed Consent

How much is it? Compared to most people (abusing alcohol is *very* common), we're Puritans (I drink about the same as you--and don't care, I could drop it if I wanted). Normally when I hear "pro-alcohol", I think "apologist for alcohol abuse", but your stance is very sensible (for those who wish to drink) and very supportive of those who don't wish to drink it all. You're just not saying "never". You're not advocating daily wine (which I think is ridiculous, personally). Anyway, just wanted to point out that your "pro-alcohol" stance is very moderate and not like the typical "pro-alcohol" stance that is an extreme (IMO).

Re: PETA's Banned Super Bowl Ad, "too sexy"

Not sexy, stupid, cliche, phony sexual (of course I am pro-sex). PeTA is against using animals as meat, but not against treating women as meat to further their cause (it's no coincidence that it's women and not men whose flesh is on display). All oppressions are interconnected, even if some are more subtly displayed than others (to our eyes). Anyone here read Carol Adams?

Re: PETA's Banned Super Bowl Ad, "too sexy"

Does this kind of thing actually get any men to go vegan? The vegan males I know are feminist and don't respect cheap sex advertising, arousing or not. One can enjoy this and not think for a second about what it means. You can work and save and travel, but that still invovles working. Travel does cost money, no matter what--you can make it cheaper, but it still costs money. The only way to make it pretty much free is hitchiking and sleeping outside--which is NOT safe for a woman, and not all that safe for a man either. Ideas here?

Re: Hitting the Road...

I am from MN, currently in NY. There's no place like home...I miss it so much! You should do tours when you're back there, so I can come see when I visit! You're in the 'burbs, though, right? Or farther, past the sprawl? It would be awesome to see the greenhouse in Dec, when everything's frosted over (assuming global warming isn't doing anything weird!)

You picked the best fruit trees :) Totally inspiring, I never even thought of doing such a thing so far north. But hey, I never knew until last summer that pears and graps and cherries and all sorts of great fruit grow in MN without anyone tending to them at all. And YUM juneberries and black raspberries. Keep it up, I appreciate what you're doing.

Re: Hello....

Beautiful

Re: Being Overwhelmed

I had been wondering if a new one was coming out... very nice! I'm sure Dr. G would much prefer it to that standard line. I think special occasions is fine for the person that is not easily addicted to it, and since we are not drinking much, we can easily support the person who does need to abstain--since we know we can have fun without it if we choose to.

Re: You Become What You Study

It's good to get money--but I wish he had the awareness to see that an economic system that depends on some people working hard like serfs is not where we want to be in the end. I read a story about an earthquake in rural Iran. A father was interviewed; he had said goodbye to his seven year old daughter in the morning before she ran off to school. Later that day, the school collapsed, killing all the schoolchildren inside. The father was consumed with unending grief. It struck me so deeply, and I couldn't stop crying. I can't tell that story without crying, I don't know why it struck me so much when there are always horrible stories like that in the news. I wonder about her father, still.

But from that, I knew that I cared about other people and could never live a life not true to that. I could never think unimportant things were important for long. It was tragic but the love that makes it tragic is the most beautiful thing.

For Senad--the "justice" system mainly acts to protect those with power. It is not so satisfying to know that the perpetrator will have to live with the karma he has created. But you can work to help others that have been in your position (or to prevent/protect others) and find beauty and meaning in that.

Re: PETA and Feminism.

I don't agree, there are many vegan eco-feminists who have problems with PeTA's tactics. The woman is a piece of meat figuratively, presented for our consumption. It pits feminism against speciesism, which is why I have a big problem with PeTA. Vegans of Color blog has a good number of well-written articles on the topic that I highly recommend.

Naked as virtue? They say themselves they do it because sex sells. There's a reason you won't see a fat, naked woman or any other body not considered fit for consumption. It's not the symbolism of nudity, it's "sex sells".

Re: Complete Protein Myth

Thanks for busting this ridiculous myth!

Re: Lose the TV/Land Line, Save the Cell/Computer

I completely disagree with the "lose the landline" comment. Having just a landline is much greener and much less stressful--all you do is plan ahead, and life is so much simpler, a million less interruptions. If you're attached to your cell, okay, but don't pretend it's better environmentally and try and get everyone to lose their landlines.
