Invasive species means it's threatening the biodiversity in its new habitat, since there are no good predators or competitors, like it evolved with. But if people knew we could eat it, maybe that wouldn't be the case anymore! Please put up more posts like this!

in PETA's Banned Super Bowl Ad, "too sexy" on We Like It Raw
Does this kind of thing actually get any men to go vegan? The vegan males I know are feminist and don't respect cheap sex advertising, arousing or not. One can enjoy this and not think for a second about what it means. As a hetero female, where are the men in this ad?

This ad isn't about sex... it's a parody of sex, as is so common in our culture.

Not sexy, stupid, cliche, phony sexual (of course I am pro-sex). PeTA is against using animals as meat, but not against treating women as meat to further their cause (it's no coincidence that it's women and not men whose flesh is on display). All oppressions are interconnected, even if some are more subtly displayed than others (to our eyes). Anyone here read Carol Adams?

in Raw Food and Alcohol: Do They Mix? [Raw Magazine Article] on Raw Food, Right Now!
It's nice to see a pro-alcohol stance that is NOT "drink wine all the time, it's so healthy for you!". I'm sure Dr. G would much prefer it to that standard line. I think special occasions is fine for the person that is not easily addicted to it, and since we are not drinking much, we can easily support the person who does need to abstain--since we know we can have fun without it if we choose to.

I would like to note, your pro-alcohol is not like society's pro-alcohol stance. Compared to most people (abusing alcohol is *very* common), we're Puritans (I drink about the same as you--and don't care, I could drop it if I wanted). Normally when I hear "pro-alcohol", I think "apologist for alcohol abuse", but your stance is very sensible (for those who wish to drink) and very supportive of those who don't wish to drink it all. You're just not saying "never". You're not advocating daily wine (which I think is ridiculous, personally). Anyway, just wanted to point out that your "pro-alcohol" stance is very moderate and not like the typical "pro-alcohol" stance that is an extreme (IMO).

Awwww... your teeth! I was born with not so good teeth as well, and don't always take care of them like I should. What a good reminder not to take anything for granted. Sending you love for the recovery! It sounds like you are making the best of a crappy situation, be proud of yourself for that.
Hope all has gone well...

in The Moment on Paulo Coelho's Blog
When I was eleven or twelve or so, I was reading the newspaper--actually on the toilet! I read a story about an earthquake in rural Iran. A father was interviewed; he had said goodbye to his seven year old daughter in the morning before she ran off to school. Later that day, the school collapsed, killing all the schoolchildren inside. The father was consumed with unending grief. It struck me so deeply, and I couldn't stop crying. I can't tell that story without crying, I don't know why it struck me so much when there are always horrible stories like that in the news. I wonder about her father, still.

But from that, I knew that I cared about other people and could never live a life not true to that. I could never think unimportant things were important for long. It was tragic but the love that makes it tragic is the most beautiful thing.

For Senad--the "justice" system mainly acts to protect those with power. It is not so satisfying to know that the perpetrator will have to live with the karma he has created. But you can work to help others that have been in your position (or to prevent/protect others) and find beauty and meaning in that.

It's good to get money--but I wish he had the awareness to see that an economic system that depends on some people working hard like serfs is not where we want to be in the end. Of course I'd rather be the person at the top--but I don't want anyone to be living in poverty (which is how companies make $$--pay people at the bottom very little--that's why fair trade products are so expensive).

Hell yeah. Too many people vote, and then say--okay, this guy will do it for us. Way disempowering and missing the point. Vote or don't, but be active in your everyday life to make this world the way we want it.

I am from MN, currently in NY. There's no place like home...I miss it so much! You should do tours when you're back there, so I can come see when I visit! You're in the 'burbs, though, right? Or farther, past the sprawl? It would be awesome to see the greenhouse in Dec, when everything's frosted over (assuming global warming isn't doing anything weird!)

You picked the best fruit trees :) Totally inspiring, I never even thought of doing such a thing so far north. But hey, I never knew until last summer that pears and graps and cherries and all sorts of great fruit grow in MN without anyone tending to them at all. And YUM juneberries and black raspberries. Keep it up, I appreciate what you're doing.

Anthony Thanks so much Sara...good to hear from a fellow MN'er...Im hoping that everything stays warm in the greenhouse...this is totally experimental here...

BUT YES! We have so much variety...and if we use our smarts, we can grow just about anything!

Im past the burbs...about 5 miles out of the clutter...neighbors are about 50 yards away through the woods. Not bad...cant see anyone in the spring and summer.

Enjoy the NY life!

yeah, for sure. Plants are great to be by indoors for many reasons, and O2 production is just another great one.

I like your advice, but what if you're young and independent--no handouts from mom and dad? You can work and save and travel, but that still invovles working. Travel does cost money, no matter what--you can make it cheaper, but it still costs money. The only way to make it pretty much free is hitchiking and sleeping outside--which is NOT safe for a woman, and not all that safe for a man either. Ideas here?

Anthony I didnt receive handouts either...but what was most interesting was the fact that the less money I spent, the more interesting the adventures became.

Would you consider volunteering on an organic farm for 30 hours a week in exchange for room and board? Would you consider working in the states for 3 months every year, then going to other parts of the world and live like a queen with those earnings?

The key is to make the intention first...then plan around it. Make the intention to travel 50% out of the year, then figure out how. Too many people forget to ask HOW...

If you are hardcore, of course you can bike and camp across the country. You will be a stronger soul afterwards...no doubt.

Maybe you can strike a balance. I recommend checking out the book "The Four Hour Workweek" by Timothy Ferris. Maybe you can set up something online...like taking photographs as you travel and then have them available for purchase on etsy or cafepress.

Maybe you can work 1 month, take two months for adventure..rinse and repeat.

It boils down to the simple fact that you choose your reality. Id rather be free-range and happy than padding my cell...in denial about my captivity.

If you are young and independent...your 90% closer to that dream. Use giveittomeraw.com to make friends...find out if you can help on retreats...you are young and you have plenty of time to "GET A REEEAAAALLLL job."

The more you travel, the more in touch you will likely become with source energy, and the less stuff you will have to buy to make you happy. The less stuff you buy, the less you have to earn money...the less you have to work so the more free time you have for your pleasure and creative pursuits. Its really a wonderful thing.

Set the intention....then work with it. Much support always, feel free to email me.

Refined sugar makes me feel awful and I have learned to associate the two. It makes the idea of refined sugar awful and made my desire for it go away, over time.

There is a lot of fuzzy science in the raw world, I appreicate you speaking up. I do NOT think everything needs to be scientifically verified (there's a lot science can't see or measure--like why refined sugar gives me hellish menstrual cramps but eating tons of fruit makes me feel good), but pseudo-science really bothers me.

How much is it? I can't even afford to get my cavities filled, much less replace old ones... I suppose if I went from fresh produce to beans and rice as my diet staples I could afford it :p Seriously though, any numbers?

in Recognizing insanity & transcending it on We Like It Raw
Great post. I would add a question I've been putting out for myself... How do I get to the point where I do not desire to overeat, that it is undesirable and uninteresting (people may substitue their own vices)? So that it is a matter of feeling good, and not a matter of discipline? I was able to go veg and vegan without feeling restricted or that it was a matter of will...but I still use food as a form of entertainment and it is very dulling (I know from when I have fasted).

I keep overeating eating on the weekends, I suppose because I can, because a part of me enjoys it, because I've gained just a few pounds so am still slim (even if my poor stomach is stuffed, and the weight gain will add up). So, how to I get to a place where I register as full , and don't want to eat more?

Thoughts on vaccines? This seems like a big issue, especially if you're going for awhile--recommended or no?
Anthony Ive had no vaccines...none were needed where I went...(Cambodia, Malaysia, Nepal, Thailand) but I never went super deep into the jungles either.

David Wolfe is completely against them, and I would have to take his stance on that. I think if our immune systems are built up enough, we should be ok. However...when dealing with Malaria? Damn...I dont know. Read more about it. You can go to most places in the world...really exotic places, and not have to worry about vaccinations though. Most are scary precautions just like every other vaccine.
