in Is Facebook’s redesign aimed at Silicon Valley, not everywhere else? on VentureBeat
I have a lot of college-aged friends that, even though the too participate in the 'bling river', very much find it annoying and un-navigable from a usability standpoint.

With all that money Fbook has, I'm sure they've spent quite a bit of time/money on usability testing & research to find out what people really want -- which I believe is just photos and news and interaction with friends -- at the end of the day, everything else is just icing (i.e. bling river).

in louisgray.com: Seeing The Web's Racist Underbelly Is Saddening and Shocking on louisgray.com
Louis,

Although I didn't specifically address racist, I wrote an interesting post about black nerds, here: http://davidadewumi.com/2008/07/06/why-are-blac... (the reddit and hacker news comments, as well as those on my blog, are particularly insightful)

At the end of the day, as a black person, I'm not too offended by that stuff. I've had one girlfriend (white) whose family and friends would talk about me using the word 'nigger', and another Puerto Rican girlfriend whose one side of the family refuses to accept me for being black. I've experienced racism from the Amazon Jungle to the Carribeans to Colorado.

It's really something where, as a young black male, I don't really have time to convince everyone to be thoughtful and courteous of color, sex, religion, ethos, or any other physical, hereditary, or learned characteristic.

Besides, why let someone who hides behind anonymity get beneath your skin? At least in Feldman's post he was who he is.

The most important thing in this country is not that everybody is not racist, but that despite whatever social or cultural difference or prejudice someone has against you or I, opportunity still flows abundant.

in louisgray.com: The Five Stages Of Early Adopter Behavior on louisgray.com
What strikes me Louis, is that some sites, like Facebook didn't go through that early adopter phase. The early adopters were Harvard students and Ivy Leaguers. I"m trying to understand your article in the context of sites like Facebook, who didn't necessarily attract the generic early adopter.

Louis Gray That's absolutely right as Facebook controlled who could use the service for a long time. But when they did open up, it enabled the "true" early adopters to jump in, and the site further accelerated with the API. You can see people like Scoble embrace the site, and then get frustrated by the limits or the uselessness of apps. Now he's not talking much about Facebook at all. TechCrunch memorably said Facebook could challenge Microsoft.

So the early adopter cycle happened. But it happened later in the site's lifespan, after it had opened up.

any personal examples of products you've gone through this cycle with?

Louis Gray I can't say I've gone through all five stages, as I tend not to have enough pull to migrate an entire group of people along. A few years ago, this behavior could be seen on stock bulletin boards, as we moved from Yahoo! to Raging Bull to Investors Hub, for example.

More recent examples would be prioritizing FriendFeed over Twitter, or you could see people flock to Facebook and later, fall away from it. You can even see people telling FriendFeed what they should or shouldn't do, or saying it needs to play out the way they want.

Regarding Shanmac's comment, I would be a big Apple promoter, for sure, but now that they're in the leadership position, I don't feel the need to liveblog every keynote or wave the Apple flag. It's actually a very relaxing mode... like in #3, where we were vindicated as being right. I hope not to get to stage 4 or 5 with them.

in Hyperlocal Has To Be Peer Produced on A VC
With a property like outside.in, is that where exactly are they grabbing peer-produced content,f from?

The problem, Fred, is the definition of "news." What if I told a story on My Facebook, or myspace account (I actually don't have one) that was a blog post about my experiences surrounding a news event, say, an NBA finals game. A first-hand account.

That is peer-produced "news" so to speak, such as we've seen with Twitter, where people are essentially making micro-blog posts firing off news faster than the major mainstream media players.

How does Outside.in organize said social content, and integreate (and filter) that for it's hyper-local news. If it doesn't, it fails to account for peer-produced news as it is already happening -- on our social networks and blogs ( and micro-blogs) where this content is already being created.

Are you including yourself in that mandate Caroline? :)

Caroline Furey Definitely considering it. :)

We listened to more speakers today on different risk analysis and management technologies already available and also projects underway for homeland security use. It really got my mind going about a niche perfect for SRA students. Will post more about the conference tomorrow.

that's probably good news for Xobni. I agree though, Outlook is horrible. I open it once a week just to back up emails to the desktop (and use the CRM-like Xobni to keep track of phone numbers and attachments).

Matt Maisel I've been using Outlook for the past year with my school's email account. I haven't had any real problems other then the occasional freeze-up when starting it up, and that is more likely a Vista issue than Outlook. I really like the interface with the calender and task features, because it makes it easy to become your own taskmaster. I understand that the major downfall with desktop applications like Outlook are the mobility and data portability, but I don't think you could justify classifying Outlook as horrible. David and Hannah, what do you think is so bad with Outlook?
