ahhh the bandstand...my first memory was seeing a GP lambretta down there, done up in a mod style, first one I had ever seen in the metal. I musta been about 13 and was just in awe. That typical grey spitting rain Glaswegian skyline would never look the same from down the bandstand. Rab and Jason were my closest pals in the Civic mod movement, we all banged heads over at one of the lasses house to arrange the Largs day out. Is that Camey who became a casual? Saved us a doing off ICF one night in Central station if it is so cheers if its you fella....

Wish I could remember the lasses name as I was mad about her at the time but was not old enough or good enough (sigh) hahaha...while on the memories ,,,whatever happened to big Shaun?

Memories of being questioned by some of the Glasgow skins about "who was scissors?" and just filling em with dread telling them he was the last person they ever wanted to meet and see em fill with worry. Marching through town to see "the ace face GS". Police circling the hundred odd strong mob trying to work out if we were on a war path but not being able to stem the flow. By the way, The Ace Face rode what turned out to be a heavily modified honda C90... Sting shouting out at the bloke in disbelief as the poor mug tried saying the C90, complete with backrest (paper cutting cellotaped on it saying ACE FACE) with a fibreglass lammy mudguard & bolted on PX panels was a GS hahaha....Summer nights in Cambuslang, hanging out with a lovely girlfriend and other Civics....The Clothes, the music, the scooters, the feeling of wearing new gear down the One Up cafe, the feeling of power in the city centre because you were one.... TyB haha...

Ran into Jason once in Glasgow in our twenties and he had a leather biker jacket on. I was so shocked. We went for a jar and done a bit of recapping the old days. Still remember Rab and Jason getting well upset with me when I bought my first vespa and went scooterboy. Real anger at me, which didn't last as I remember teaming up with Rab when he bought his first scoot which was a 50 special, but supposed to have been a primavera... the scoot was duly returned to chancer seller, with me riding wae him.

Rab had a massive pile of pictures, wonder if he kept them...am living in Wales now, Cardiff to be exact. Still riding vespas, haven't stopped since those formative years of my first legal scoot at 16...oh yeh...an my nickname at the time.... anyone remember? No big deal..TyB haha

I can see John McManus fae Blantyre in picture 11, with me looking over at him, then Nammy fae Cambusland beneath me looking the same way, then 4th scooter from the right is Grimbob fae Uddingston with Mitch fae Toonheed right behind him. We were all part of the Moonlighters Scooter Club at this time, just before the club became an East Kilbride scooter club that disappeared up its own **** after a year or so of infighting.

hahaha...who is NG mod then? Rab has my email so get it aff him haha...ps...sorry for the mis spell of the name Rab! DOH! Never was ma best subject. Still visiting Paradise but fae Cardiff these days... still got ma US parka and it makes a wee appearance on a vespa every noo and again.

Martin left the whole scooter scene after getting lifted for the shop window thing... He and his family were getting some real bad hassle off local skin neds and i think it broke the man a bit. Jeez, what am i calling him a man for, we were still wee boys looking back... but then again, it didn't feel it at the time.

hahaha oor big Tam got lifted in Argyle Street when a gang of skins surrounded him and a few of the Cambuslang Civics...mad man pulled a blade and CID had him in no time though he did "negotiate" to get the team away from the gang as they were heavily ootnumbered...well...if thats what ye call swinging a blade in the face of the skins wae folk trying to do shopping and suddenly running away screaming hahaha, what we would do for each other eh? Truely thick as thieves looking back... Me & Tam had a few adventures in the years after Civic... to be told another time...TOP LAD...sadly I dont see these fine lads anymore now am livin dann saff

To anyone reading this who was not about, can I point out we are only highlighting the levels of violence we were forced into to defend ourselves, our Mod thing was a lot more than just that.

hahaha Livi, what a bloke.... I ran into him at a Scotland United rally in George Square once, he was in Highland warrior get up and if I remember right had an alsation, we had a gas and then went oor separate ways... I remember a wee "fallout" we had with local West Coast mods after they had ganged up on Mick Herron fae Cambuslang at a Gerry & the Pacemakers coast gig he went to with his bird, telling him what they thought of the Civic... we had been hearded on a train by the OB, when Mick spotted the bloke on the platform that was the ringleader of the abusers... I called him over to the window to shake his hand then tried tae get him onboard as all **** broke loose hahaha. I was hitting the bloke with everything and he was just soaking it up, TG some of teh troops jopinmed in and we had about 30 seconds of dancing in the carriage till they got aff. Felt like it went on for ages...took me ages tae get ma wind back!!! haha

Hi Jim, hop eall is grand wae ye...Rab has my email also ... thats the first time I heard that story!!! Sorry tae read that, Mitch was always game for the bother so its weird it wasnae him! haha!!! Are ye saying the butcher headbutted one of my lot but hurt himsel? I mustn't a been there that day fella as I honestly have no recollection of such an incident! But there was over 40 of us at 1 time... I hope yir ok noo fella!

hahaha .. yeh Mitch had some wuild partties up Toonheed, bit blurry on the lad fae Bearsden. Did ye end up in hospital cos of the butcher incident? Hope no! The Moonlighters thing split doon the middle with 2 different mobs forming, one going on to become The Covenanters...they set up base in Blantyre as a few of them lived there.

Debbie and Carol, what a pair haha, Donna was nice too. I haven't heard from them in ages either. last I knew Debs was working in a bank, her wee bro Don was a maod but just a bit too young for hanging out with oor lot...

The girls used tae have a saying "think positive, think vespa" as they always wanted to pull a mod wae his own scoot haha.... cheeky girls, Carol and Debbie had scooters but they were not always on the road. I bumped into them a few times in town when they were walking wae their helmets....scooters in bits but they reckoned it would pull the lads so they brought them in on the train wae them haha.... You got the names bang on as far as I rememeber pal, Donna was Donna McColl.

last time I saw Jason he was in a leather jacket too haha...gave me dogs abuse when i got into the scooterist thing, as did Rab...never stopped the respect I had for them though! Carol and Debs must a been chancing a run on Carols scoot as Debs was never 100% legal if I remember right. Her old man had it in his workshop for years...he was a great fella too.

Mick Herron was a Cambie mod but committed to the Civic thing also, then there was also an old pal Billy McCallum and of course...big Tam Reid. Oor Martin swore to me he never even put a hand on the window the day of the arrest, guilty of simply being there I think! They wanted us off the streets at that time, as we know.

there was a wee shopping arcade in Argyle Street .. just opposite the train station... and I can remember trawling in their for sounds...and the guy in the wee stall had a badges stall... selling Glasgow Civic badges.... hahaha.... how he had them I do not know...I just bought a couple more..... any imges of the original badges folk?

Hi NG, I thought it was Largs we had the probs wae Kilburnie, but it may well have been Girvan as am getting old haha.... yeh, I started teh Moonlighters...we used tae do a fanzine which one of teh old scooterboys I keep in contact still has a copy of...it was called Moonlighting and was full a Glasgow gas.

i had the pleasure of meeting Edwin Starr on a few occasions. My favourite was when i was an organiser at the Wales national Scooter rally in Tenby in 2001 when he and his band headlined. An absolute gentleman, he kept the 1200 crowd dancing all night. Edwin signed an LML Star scooter which we raffled off just before he went on stage. what a voice, i hope to catch his brother soon who has joined his band and are on the road still.

ahhh Flip....Jason or oor Rab took a set of moccasins back there once as he didn't like them so they gave him a credit note. He used the credit note the week after but the sales staff left it on the counter so i stuck it in my pocket and used it for a pair myself a couple of weeks later....hahaha nice one....seeems a different life lads...

I remember meeting about 6 Motherwell mods wandering the toon and taking them doon the Briggait one weekend...they were well impressed and arranged to meet me in Glasgow the following week, with some of oor Cambuslang Mob...we met them in the Agyle Street station and i got the shock of ma life when about 50 of them piled off their train hahaha

I got a vespa P200 sprayed and muralled up (Salvador Dali) in the early 90's, costing a pretty penny, cracking airbrush artist in Renfrew, base coats by Martin Lennox of the CVS.. but the scoot stayed registered as a 125 due to cheaper tax and insurance ;)

At that time in Glaso you never seen another vespa, though Spectrum Lambretta SC were atill around. Anyway....I was outside the Scooter Centre chatting to some greasers who were well impressed with the scoot (first custom one they had seen) and aking questions about it. Then one of them asked me how long i had my full licence, I told him I didn't have one. He then said I should have been displaying L plates on it in that case. I laughed at him and pointed out that with a trick paint job like what i had, there was no space for L plates. He got all ratty and told me he was going to go and look for a police officer as i was laughing at him...I duly told him to F**k off and he did shouting he would be back with the cops...

The other 2 grebos stood there in shock, and then one of them told me the bloke i had just swore at was one of only two bike test instructors in Glasgow at that time hahaha... I decided it was time for me to f**k off ... thank God he never took my reg

I passed my bike test down here in Cardiff anyway....

have posted this elsewhere, but here we go....some of the scooters and folk in this picture at Oates are from the Moonlighters SC, 2nd full scooter from the right, is Grimbob (Sunny Uddy) on his 100 sport with Mitch fae Toonheed behind him, then there is a px to Grims left as you look at it, no sure of the rider, but it looks like Colin Namislak from Cambuslang looking left behind him, wqith me on someones shoulders also looking left above him, directly at John McManus from Blantyre who had the longest hair i could remember for a parka wearer. Johns right hand is on Tam Reids shoulder and that all the names i can remember sadly.... though its possible Johns other hand is on the shoulder of one of the Walsh clan from Blantyre...

was never a big Jam fan. I get annoyed about the emails I get from other scooterists. He plays either Cardiff or Bristol or Newport about 3 times a year nowadays and its a big money go round if you ask me. Then I get emails from mates saying he is bringing out a "limited edition cd or dvd, witgh never seen/heard remixes"... tour after tour..... Weller has made a great living out of what was basically, originally a mod following. You try and book him for a mod/scooter rally though and you would be asked for £50,000 in an instant. In the days of teh Civics I can hardly remember anyone turning a head to his creations. I do admit that in later years i did start to listen and yes, enjoy the Jam, but not really when i was going through my mod years. I can remember someone offering me a ticket for them at their last gig in Glasgow at the Apollo and thinking I was better off for putting the money by to put towards a nice new shirt.

hahah Scheme, they were associated with the early football hooligans a lot when I was in my first scooter club...a reggae style band. They split up after some poor ned got stabbed to death at their last gig in the Barrowlands, neds fae different estates all in the hall together was bound to lead to bother.

The front man of Secret Affair is some laugh.... we had him out of his face one year at a bar on the Isle of Wight rally...he couldn't speak. We had taken 15000 Fabulous! stickers over to the Island and I think most of them ended up on him that night haha!

haha, Admin, I can lay claim to pictiure 1 here...Its Hutton standing beside me in a leather jacket, Ginger martin fae Cambuslang behind me and am sitting on my first ever scoot...a brand new PK (can still hear Rab slagging me off over it haha...ah well...good wae the bad...)

Sodding things breaks seized on me and I ended up in hospital the next spring...1986...with a fractured spine, the reg was C910 KGG..... Cost me £510 from Oates if I remember right...a lifetime of saving up and I end up looking like Atom Ant haha... so many scoots since then, though only 2 other small frames, both ETS which i got cheap and made handsome reward on... that must be a Jenny Hunter picture outsdide the One Up if i remember correctly...

the Good Thing video was shot twice, one with the scooters and the other...well who really cares about the other HA!. The London Jokers were the stars in it.

I was riding with the A470 Jokers for a while in Wales so regularly banged heads with the London firm who incidentally were set up after the Welsh club. Marco (one of teh London crew) is in this and now runs a very succesful vespa franchise in the South of England (or at least he was when my mate Chris Mac last purchased a vespa from him)... Remember being so chuffed when i seen this on telly knowing my scene was getting such cool recognition.

did we no have another badge that simply said TYB and was worn under the lapel as a less obvious type thing due to the fraudulant use of oor original badges HAHA, JEEZ, WAS LIKE BEING A MASON!!!! I can remember going to order the civic badges at the wee stall in the Argyle Street Arcade market thing, but a wee bit hazy on the TYB badges so could be a wee bit wrong on that...

haha Stevie fae Cranhill, the "ace face" wiz a legend in his own lunchtime! I remember also, riding into Cardiff on a brand new P200 elestart vespa in 2001 with lights and mirrors and jumping a set of lights. Unbeknown to me I had a plis car behind me who followed me to the next lights and throuh their in car tannoy system told me they had watched me jump lights and that with 16 mirrors I should have known they were behind me haha.... they didn't charge me but laughed a lot...

sigh...I must confess to succumbing to the psychobilly stuff for a wee while when it was "fashionable" (a contradiction I hear you shout haha) in the scooter world... there was a very much tongue in cheek approach to some of the music...I mean...who could take King Kurt serious????

I don't think I met anyone on the rallies (apart from 1 nice lad from Abergavenny in Wales) who bought into the scootabilly thing for life...thsi lad still appears in the background of telly shows such as Holby City as he is a professional extra!!!

anyway...all the sill hairdos took their toll and noo am just an old slaphead haha

I remember the skins attacking us one sunny day on the back road of the barras, as me and a few of the lads were heading home. There was an army of them...tooled up with golf clubs and bats, I was heading to the crazy house railway bridgey bit when I heard this almighty roar behind us....they charged a handful of us and I just managed to get in a shop and hold teh door closed as they tried to boot the door in.... they weren't Glasgow skins whoever they were,and they were a good deal older and uglier haha

I think NG has hit the nail on the head with his summising of the 80's, though I was only a civic mod for a couple of years and visited SS along the way too, it was amagical time and I deeply regret all the minor in squabbling that happened. It was FABULOUS catching up with Rab in Glasgow a couple of months back, old friendships may have been stretched, but are all fully functioning these days I feel. This was a magic part of my growing up. I only now realise that in actual fact my Cambuslang mod gang (all Civics eventually) were in the main, on the outskirts of the Civic movement as was oor wee toon.

Crackin pictures Jackie, wish I could remember all the names....is that Carol Harkins of Cambuslang in pic 44, wae the white top on?

remember going to the Star Club on the Clydeside for a few Globies do's, guess I was at that age where it was not always easy to get served in bars so didn't go into the city centre too often at nights...most were spent in Cambuslang, hangin out with the mods an scooterboys and sneaking down to a local boozer where some of us got served regular haha

I burnt off 25 of that Christmas album when I bought my new house in Cardiff and one fine night in the week before Christmas, after suitable refreshment at a local hostelry, myself and a young lady I was hosting, popped em through all the neighbours letter boxes instead of cards as a nice way of intro'ing myself ....2 cards and 3 years later I still growl when I see that album.... Spent a lot of time and effort printing them up for ungrateful sods haha, ah well...thats what happens when ye up and leave a dear friendly place like Glasgow for Cardiff South Wales....(emotional fiddle music now please) sniff sniff......

ehhh, I was asked to LEAVE the Polish club one winter night in the 80's cos even though I was wearing mod clothes...I was considered a known scooterist hahaha...how fussy over nowt! Being a respectable x civic I duly left with one of the East Kilbride lot before any threats were made. Did ask (and get) for my entry fee back haha... I was never offended by such actions as I had a lot of respect for the Glasgow mod movement but do remember dreading the scooter ride home as it was baltic and I was staying in East Kilbride that night... we rode our scoots everywhere in those days, we musta been mad.

Guess looking back the music wasn't to my taste anyway sadly as I was moving on into the Northern thing at the time ... was a bit let down at a certain lass who had asked me to come along repeatedly.. She wasn't even there to stick up for me when I actually showed... a tickle to be had another time haha

haha, yir ruight...there is a bit of the Shane Ritchie about this chaps hair. Talking of movies....new footy one coming out called AWAYDAYS, based in Liverpool in the late 70's and the footy urchins... I do believe there is a mod or 2 in the trailer for this....hope its good and factual and not all trackies haha

When I say sang he mimed to ‘I Surrender’ a few times. I’m just glad he never got the first part wrong with it being here in the West of Scotland, could have caused a rammy.

my fave part was Jimmy pulling up outside the Goldhawk Social, pulling his lammy on its stand and walking away as ye see it slipping forward off the stand...and him riding with Miss Ash (musta been on a flatback van) and when he gets angry he slams the scoot gears all over teh place without losing it haha...

still a gem of a movie and remember being all excoited seeing it teh first time knowing someone had made a movie about "oor thing"

he showed up in Cambuslang once to see oor Debbie... she was knotted up as he had told her he rode an immaculate GS.... he forgot to mention it was a C90 "mod"ificated version hahaha... I kept asking him why? And he was defending it first of all trying to say it was a prototype hahaha...too much... was it not some rock band he had sign painted on the PX panels too? Waste fo a nice 100 vespa to chuck it Charlie... class not speed I always tell Greasers hahaha

haha thaats the place...the barrel vaults....I remember it now....and Gav Lennox.... hahaha, we used to meet Monday nights there and all teh scoots would be lined up outside the pub...with regular ability Gavin would sneak out when nobody was watching him and switch everybody petrol off.... ye think we would learn!!! We would all get to the same roundabout and all the scoots would start dying out hahaha, think we would learn!!!

talking of casuals, I remember we nearly got mugged by a gang of rangers ICF lot in Central station one nigght cos there was about 3 of us! Not long after this incident, (ps cheers Camey for the support that evening if ya remember), I remember bumping into a few of the ICF lot who were riding vespas at the time.... a young lad called Barry was always with them....he was always in awe of Donald if my memory serves me right.... ahh to be someone must be a wonderful thing....

Northern Soul and the mod scene has always been a bit weird....we were DJ'ing down at a Bristol Mod do and oit was annoyingly full of mods up their own bahookies, who advised you how they despised Motown and Northern....yet when we DJ'd that night, these were the main dance floor fillers!!!

Northern in the main was purely non marketed Detroit type magic...stuff like Melba Moore's Magic Touch were in my opinion, just great soul, no matter whether northern or not....KTF Glasgow is my message...

qwhat I was trying to highlight though was teh type of dandies who thought they were too cool for school and bandied Motown as mainstream and thus not fine enough for them...well... that was till teh amber nectar started flowing and the dancefloor started going and suddenly, Tamla was top a the pops again...Motown magic...a phrase that can never be overused in my opinion...

yeh crackin photos, the Modrapheniacs, always loving to add their club name onto their scoots...one of the few scooter clubs that can truthfully put their hands on their hearts and say they have ran continuous from formation....

For some reason that always annoys me, such as a certain scooter club on the west coast of England which goes by the name of a ska label kidding on the club has run since 1968...
