And, as we saw, the best 'extra inch' is the one that's unexpected. I'm sure the cashier made you feel as though were his only and most important customer. These are the steps every good marketing should follow - buzz marketing or not. The only thing I might add is be patient. And when we go off topic, I know that I'm the one responsible for bring it back.

I've played this role in strategic planning and organizational development meetings for larger organizations where you might have 20 principles in the meeting - all wanting to be heard. At that point, it's vital to have someone as moderator. I couldn't agree more.

Char's comments are right on...if you have any coding skill at all, or if you're simply willing to tinker, make a backup of the WP theme you choose and then play, test, try. Use plugins. If you use an external editor instead of WP's Theme Editor, you have 'undo' capabilities. Just play and have fun. See what happens. And if you screw something up - no worries, you have your back up.

For a business, it's imperative that your site/blog be a true reflection of who you are and what you do. As Ben says here, first impressions mean a lot. It could mean the difference between making sales and not. I often don't even bother looking at sites any longer that are poorly designed.

Good design doesn't have to mean decked out to the hilt, either. Look at Ben's site - pretty straightforward. Or Copyblogger or David Airey - great, simple designs.

What important is that you keep your focus on the message you want to send your audience. While content certianly rules over all else, how you display that content is important.

I could go on and on. It's interesting how we all assume that free means I have to pay nothing. Well, if you're giving something you have in exchange for the 'free offer,' then it's not really free. So many business owners - small business owners in particular - see the web as some magic bullet to build their business. They often see it as put up a site, do the latest marketing program and generate untold revenue. But we all know that's not the way to real, sustainable growth.

Re: How Do I Subscribe to This Blog - let me count the ways

I'm asking the same question myself. Since I work exclusively with service-oriented small businesses, I see this a lot. Way too much emphasis put on the 'look' of a site by the site owners. What's worse is when the site owner wants what they want and not what works for the audience - regardless of suggestion. Clients need to learn that they're not building a website for themselves - they don't need it. They're building their website for their target audience - who need their services.

Personally, I've transitioned a lot since building my first website 1998. I've learned a ton about business development, marketing strategy and niche market positioning. I bring all that to my clients. Yet it's interesting how little most clients seem to know about their audience's needs and wants. I try to help them bridge that gap so that their site actually has a chance to meet their business goals.

Re: The Best Unknown Mac Apps - 1

Thanks. I watched our 11pm news last night for the first time in months. First 7 stories were about murder, rape, a car accident, murder trial, Iraq War (soldier's dying), child porn and a gas explosion inside a home. My God, is that all they can report - destruction, violence, hate? I didn't finish the newcast. Instead, spent the last 20 minutes in front of my computer getting the news I want in the way I want from the sources I want - and the weather. Probably saw 5x as much news in the 20 minutes on my computer than I would have on the tv. No commercials. And best yet, I got to choose the news I wanted to hear about.

And truthfully, I don't care about Anna Nicole, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Brad & Angelina, or Tom & Katie's baby. I want news, not stories about celebrities. To me, they are seldom news.

Re: Shel and I agree

Get this book. In this country we have to stop this abusive attacking of women. For the love of God, we all came from mothers who sacrificed greatly for our life. Even the worst of moms went through child-birth and were able to keep us alive into adulthood. So we need to stop with all this voilence against women. There is no place in society for this abuse. And there is no place in the blogosphere for this type of terror.

Re: Using Web Analytics to View the Landscape Not Blades of Grass

Thanks Andy. One thing I might test is having the banner and having a graphic-oriented button above your photo on the sidebar - full width. Then test how many click-throughs you get using each. You may be able to get rid of the banner if you find the 'button' works better. The button, by the way, would be more like an banner add, maybe the size of your 'earn more' link. Maybe you've tested this already, not sure.

My one hesitation about the top banner is that it's pretty much expected that a link in your banner/masthead will lead users back to the homepage. Might it get a little confusing to take them somewhere else? Again, maybe you've thought of that and tested it.

Re: Testing new big banner on my blog

I like this better, though I would optimzie its size to the full width of your sidebar. PayPal API, Virtual Terminal, PayPal Debit Card and everything else PayPal offers for $20/mo. Hard to beat the fees.

Some folks don't like PayPal, but I've, personally, never had a problem and I've run my entire business through PayPal for seven years. People do not have to have a PayPal account to pay you. That's one of the major misunderstandings about PayPal.

A number of my clients use Authorize.net. Very stable and secure. Fees a bit high, in my opinion.

Remember that other than monthly fees, you need to look at how much the payment processor takes per transaction - percentage and other fees. Some are quite high.

I've also worked with international clients who use WorldPay. Another good service.

Re: New slogan for my new site

I like it. From what you've said, it sounds like participation is completely voluntary. And the topics they ask for...as a blogger, you get to decide whether you'd want to write or not.

All-in-all, I think it's a good experiment. Now, if blogs begin only posting posts written for and approved by PayPerPost, that's a different story.

I'm going to take a look at PayPerPost just to see more detail about what they do and who they serve.

But the bottom line that every blogger - especially business bloggers - should consider is whether being involved with PayPerPost fits with your overall blog/business objectives. If not, you have your answer.

Re: One thing I don´t like about Wordpress

Hey Jens...there might be a plugin for this, though I've not seen one. Even if it seems like it when you sign up, Aweber cross checks all affiliate names, emails, phones and domain names against the affiliate link owner. So if you initially get credit, very quickly that credit will be taken away.

I think other affiliates are different.

Re: Legal to refer yourself?

There's no 'legal' issues. But you don't necessarily have to do a video. How about a screencast? Do a tutorial - or even an introduction - to MLMForums or Text Link Ads. Do something on MyBlogLog or setting up Technorati. Even if it's done already, you can still generate traffic from it. And the time, effort and costs are minimal in producing screencasts - you simply need an idea, a mic to narrate and the ability to record your screen - which can be inexpensive software.

Re: Personal photo in my RSS feeds?

Yeah, definitely images.
