But you did say "the developers are scratching their heads for a business case." So I'm just saying, I'm not a developer of Seesmic, and I didn't see much immediate business use. So I was looking for thoughts from everyone else, and am honored to have both you and Chris responding.

As for being sensitive, well, my role with Seesmic is a non-standard one... all I do is blog for them. I don't get much insight into the day-to-day, so I just don't want my boss' at Seesmic to say, "Why are you saying that our developers are scratching their heads as to what to do with Seesmic in business." or something to that effect. :-) I'm just putting it out there.

Cheers!
Jeremy Vaught

Re: Seesmic for business

Allow me to clarify a bit. One thing I do with the blog is engage the Seesmic community. So me asking about business uses is just me asking the question because I'm engaging you. And that part worked, you have fine answers. Just don't mistake what I said for Seesmic as a whole having a lack of vision. What I said are my thoughts.

Thanks for reading the blog though :) And thanks for contributing. I certainly look forward to hearing more from you in the future.

Jeremy Vaught

Re: Is Apple Rotten to the Core?

Nah. Apple is a company. And not only that, a public company. It isn't all about Steve. So Steve has to protect against the ire of stockholders, and by making more profit, stockholders are happy. Having said that, Apple will make more profit if they continue to innovate and thus selling more product. They will, and they do. Sure the price reduction thing looks bad, but that's business.

I think that Apple needs to push harder then it ever has before to open up the iPhone to 3rd party applications. Make it an open platform, this is the secret sauce of the iPhone. Currently, the iPhone is pretty good, open that up to 3rd party devs, and it is great.

Midnight ramblings :-)

Re: MeToday - Sept 30th, 2007

haha, that's funny stuff. :D hopefully your Halo 3 will improve. practice practice practice

Re: It’s all about the Parking Garage!

Brent! Mainly because this is exactly what I feel, so it is good to here Dave Winer say it. So many programmers think it is all about the program. I would like to remind you that Second Life is user created. And where there are faults, the gaps are filled by the users. The L Word is a great example. I wasn't a Sheep yet when that was conceived, but it is a great example of filling a gap that needed filling. And it has been hugely successful! I'll just say that our retention is a little north of the Linden Lab retention, and little is a term of opinion. (UPS makes a little profit in my opinion)

I think we are making the metaverse a better place to be, and Second Life is just the beginning.

Thanks for highlighting the news CC, and I'm glad to be a buddy. :-)

Re: Workplace Happiness

nice!

Re: Why I Dont Visit Second Life

I'm confused. Sure, the inner geek thinks that would be cool, but in reality, I like my books being 'offline'.

I don't lose them when my computer crashes, they don't rely on battery power, I can read them while the airplane is taking off and landing, I never have to get my book warrantied, I like getting a paperback for $5, (and any time there is a new technology, even if it is easier to produce, the price goes up, i.e. tapes to CDs), and many many more reasons.

Books are great. They have always been profitable as far as I'm aware. They were profitable when I was hired, and they hadn't received the CBS money yet. (Which was $7 mil, $2 mil paid off some early investors, and $5mil went in the bank for a rainy day)

It looks to me like 1. They fired a bunch of people that were about to qualify for their first vesting of stock, which I explain in more detail at my blog. And 2. They just freed up more then $100,000 a month in expenses with these firings.

These two things add up to one very likely result. They are showing more profitability so they can sell the company, and the founders get to keep a bunch of stock they almost lost to those employees. It's a win-win for everybody involved. (everybody being the founders, long time employees, and investors)

Re: Keeping it simple!

meh, email was hard once too.
