in Google Latitude is a Marker to Consider on Chris Brogan
I like the idea of Brightkite, but can't stand having to remember all the txt commands for every mobile app out there. Thus, this is perfect. I installed it on my N95 the first night it was available.

Indeed, Brightkite/Plazes etc..., be on notice.

And don't be the guy that, when you are talking to them at a conference, they are looking over your should for someone cooler to talk to. (not you Chris, you don't do this, but plenty of peeps do)

I'm generally not a bot follower either. I follow 1/2 as many as follow me, so I'm not much of a follow everyone kind of guy, but I'll try this out before coming to any conclusions. What's three more tweets a day...

Besides, I've never read Pride and Prejudice.

3 things.

1. Fantastic post, I find it hard to believe you are constantly on the edge of being broke when you are always putting out such great content. And great seeing you again at SXSW.

2. @paul above, lol, because I found this post on FriendFeed.

3. to build on what Laura said. When I was a freelance PHP developer, almost all of my work came through LinkedIn. Often 2nd party (someone needed a PHP dev, they asked a friend if they knew anyone, that friend did a search on LinkedIn, and recommended me to the first person)

great new look on the blog btw Chris... ahh, just noticed it is Nico who did it, nice

I don't think they ran out of money. They have always been profitable as far as I'm aware. They were profitable when I was hired, and they hadn't received the CBS money yet. (Which was $7 mil, $2 mil paid off some early investors, and $5mil went in the bank for a rainy day)

It looks to me like 1. They fired a bunch of people that were about to qualify for their first vesting of stock, which I explain in more detail at my blog. And 2. They just freed up more then $100,000 a month in expenses with these firings.

These two things add up to one very likely result. They are showing more profitability so they can sell the company, and the founders get to keep a bunch of stock they almost lost to those employees. It's a win-win for everybody involved. (everybody being the founders, long time employees, and investors)

I appreciate these words. Mainly because this is exactly what I feel, so it is good to here Dave Winer say it. So many programmers think it is all about the program. But I say the program is just a fancy front end for a database, or several databases. Programs are all about getting the data, manipulating the data, and putting back updated data.

It all starts with a great database.

in Do I Need a Book Reader on Chris Brogan
I can't see an electronic device being preferred to paper books any time soon. Sure, the inner geek thinks that would be cool, but in reality, I like my books being 'offline'.

I don't lose them when my computer crashes, they don't rely on battery power, I can read them while the airplane is taking off and landing, I never have to get my book warrantied, I like getting a paperback for $5, (and any time there is a new technology, even if it is easier to produce, the price goes up, i.e. tapes to CDs), and many many more reasons.

Books are great. Electronic books will have their place, but books are books, and books are awesome. I'm not giving mine up any time soon.

If your hardware keeps breaking, you can blame Apple, but you can't praise Microsoft for your Dell that doesn't break down.

Not exactly Apples and Apples, heh.

in Is Apple Rotten to the Core? on I Bought a Mac
Nah. Apple is a company. And not only that, a public company. It isn't all about Steve. So Steve has to protect against the ire of stockholders, and by making more profit, stockholders are happy. Having said that, Apple will make more profit if they continue to innovate and thus selling more product. They will, and they do. Sure the price reduction thing looks bad, but that's business.

I think that Apple needs to push harder then it ever has before to open up the iPhone to 3rd party applications. Make it an open platform, this is the secret sauce of the iPhone. Currently, the iPhone is pretty good, open that up to 3rd party devs, and it is great.

Midnight ramblings :-)

meh, email was hard once too. NOW everyone does it. I say promote both equally, because eventually, even our grandmas will be using Google Reader, and wondering why you are so stuck on old school email. Hey, I've got my mom using Juice to download podcasts :-) Now that's progress.

I would also think you demographic is all over RSS.
