Kaum gehe ich mal wieder zum Sneak, macht Axel Urlaub - und gezeigt wird, dementsprechend, "The Holiday". Als Zugabe gab es vorher den 3D-Cartoon "Haunted House": Eine Katze verirrt sich in ein verlassenes, natürlich voll unheimliches Haus, in dem u.a. das mit gemeinen Puppen gespickte Kinderzimmer eines künftigen Ego-Shooters zu besichtigen ist.

Der Hauptfilm: eine "Romantic Comedy". Schon nach wenigen Minuten ist man wieder einmal darüber informiert, dass Menschen von heute (a) ihren Urlaub ausgoogeln(tm), (b) Beziehungen am Blackberry(tm) aushandeln, (c) ihre Email über WLAN am Sony Vaio(tm) abfragen und (d) transatlantisch British Airways(tm) fliegen. Außerdem ist man in L.A. selbst mit 90 noch ziemlich hip und fröhlich (man wohnt schließlich in luftigen 500qm-Bungalows), während man in England in einem zugigen kleinen Hexenhäuschen eher depressiv wird.

Es sei denn man heißt Graham (Jude Law), kommt auch im englischen Winter gut gebräunt daher und kann eine kalifornische Filmtrailerproduzentin (Cameron Diaz) blitzschnell von den Vorteilen des Alleinerziehens zweier Kinder und eines Dinners (!) in einem englischen Pub überzeugen. Die findet es daraufhin doch gar nicht so schlecht in Europa, obwohl sie ihren Haustausch mit der "Bridget Jones"-mäßig frustrierten Schwester von Graham (Kate Winslet) bereits bereut hatte. Am Ende: merry Christmas for everyone!

Fazit: Unterhaltsamer wäre es gewesen, noch einmal "Changing Places" von David Lodge zu lesen ...

Gregor is not a cochroach but, according to Vladimir Nabokov, he is something else. The fact that he is impossible to picture, except when Kafka gives us the instances of his appearence, gives the reader a poignant new aspect of Gregors embodiment. I think that this is very important to note.


I think that you also have to note the abyss within life that is revealed. You recognize the irony of Gregor as the oppressor, but you do not notice the repressed Gregor. Kafka's existentialism is very evident in the story as he laments for the individual. This is exemplified in Gregors aspirations for the future , as he is also trying to escape the imprisonment of his family duties, and of the society. The insect is a symbol of a persons arduous struggle for individuality where he becomes exactly an insect, a meaningless creature tormented by his acute consciousness.
