You need a new investor at each round to re-price the company. Right?

in What Is A Good Venture Return? on A VC
Great post and comments. Could you do a post (or expand these comments) on angel investors in technology start-ups of the kind we see in the Cambridge Cluster, UK? It seems that angels can expect a higher loss than 1/3, probably 1/2 and with the added risk of washout rounds. Also comment on how entrepreneurs/founders can best manage the many angels, or is that only found in high technology clusters?

Angels will have to make money on fewer wins with bigger multiples
Ron Conway is famous for losing money on every investment he made as an
angel in the late 90s except one, Google
The return on his entire portfolio was quite good

no, although we cam really close to investing in vimeo as a spinoff of college humor, but it was complicated and it never happened.

Great video - almost like a lecture. Can you add the question "How are you funded?" to "Who are you?" and "What do you do?"?
Even better if you could place the screen/monitor at the same level as the interviewee's head so it is easier for you to pan round for the screen shots and will make much better viewing for us. We will be able to see the screen!
How many .tv sites do you use?

The comments I sent to GoodRec:
How do I make a rec? I cannot see how to add a place.....maybe just me...
Why can you not fill the database with places from databases so we can just rec?
We need a "pub" category for the UK and elsewhere
Great idea. Saw it on Scobleizer

in When Talking About Business Models, Remember That Profits Equal Revenues Minus Costs on A VC
Great conversation and good blog - I passed it on in my talk at the weekend to Cambridge University Entrepreneurs. Companies in the Cambridge Cluster, UK, need investment to develop technology; the options to build a team and the skills to sell the company. Just a pity that some entrepreneurs spend the investment on "flash" items, as other people have commented, but it gives the rest of us a chance! It must be frustrating to be a small shareholder in Craigslist waiting to cash in and start your own company- it is like being chained to a life-style company but with a nest-egg!

From Boxee: "....you may have to wait a few weeks before you receive your invite".
Any chance that readers of your blog (read Fan Club) can be put up the waiting list on the alpha trials or given a separate trial? Of course Hulu is not UK OK! so we cannot join in all the way.

I picked up Zemanta from your posts and it helps me with my blog. It is a pity that the user cannot train it or add URLs and phrases; or at least I cannot directly. Zemanta means we all need pictures in Flickr. Any more details on the sort of deal you have done? Will you flip Zemanta to Delaware? Will you be bringing in a CEO? Any details on the equity so we an learn how you have put the deal together and what others might expect?

"The development part of the team is working hard to finalize our next release: Zemanta is Getting Personal! With the release, we shifted our tool from being a general suggestion service to personalized service. You’ll be able to upload your sources and limit the suggestion pool to your sources, you’ll be able to search through your Flickr account and point Zemanta to your Twitter account to get related blogs from your friends."

in My Web 2.0 Keynote Presentation on A VC
Great slides but perhaps too much history - reminds me of a Microsoft talk I watched on video from TechCruch. One slide could show all the companies with a time-line and how they connected; entrepreneurs, angels and/or VCs. Then we could keep it as a poster. We want to know your views on the future. Great to share the slides and look forward to watching the talk. Live like TechCrunch? Wish you were coming to CEC9, UK this week!

This is a great lesson to us all and our companies. It would be good to have the lessons listed. I bet if you had been selling a product, you would have seen your dollar income decline rapidly! Good luck to Nathan.

Zementa is great and I am updating some of my old posts. Looking forward to hearing more about Zementa and Seedcamp at CUTEC in Cambridge, UK, last week. I am not sure that one week of Seedcamp is quite like Y Cominbator but with Saul Klein in the driving seat it will not be far behind. Interestingly he has recruited Seedcamp companies from outside the UK - a pity he did not base it in Cambridge Cluster, UK!

in Doriot Quote Of The Day on A VC
So why do some many investors move up the value chain investing larger amounts at later stages or moving onto MBOs? You do not see many private equity companies in this space. But it is the space to be - where it all happens with people and dreams.

Its about money. Let's say we own 20pcnt of a company and we have to invest 5mm over five years to get to an exit. Let's say that exit is 250mm. That's 50mm of value for 5mm of investment or 10x. The partners in the firm get 20pcnt of 45mm or 9mm
Let's say you buy a company for 100mm. And then you sell it three years later for 200mm. That's 2x but a 100mm gain. The partners in the firm get 20pcnt of 100mm or 20mm
More money in less time
Early stage investing is largely done by people who value the adventure as much or more than the money
