It is (originally) a literary term that means that you "suspend [your] judgment concerning the implausibility of the narrative."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suspension_of_disb...

It doesn't really have much to do with being absorbed in an experience; it happens when you're seeing/reading something that *you know doesn't make sense*, but you accept it anyhow as apart of the story.

An example from the movies would be many action flicks where the guy is running around with a .38 (holds 6 rounds) shooting it 40 times without re-loading; you *know* it's B.S. but you still enjoy it when he kills the bad guy.

So, you can't really have your suspension of disbelief "broken," and it certainly doesn't have anything to do with being so absorbed in something that it's weird when you're interrupted. That's just being so absorbed in something that it's weird when it's interrupted. There may be a term for what you describe, but it's not "suspension of disbelief."

In response to the actual question at hand: I'd generally agree with jonknee: if you're really using a *huge* amount of bandwidth (that can affect the experience of others on your node), then you basically need to upgrade your plan to something more suitable for your use that won't degrade the service for those who are typical users just wanting to check their email.

That being said, from what I can read, I'm no friend of Comcast. They sound just like Shaw Cable or Telus up here in Canada.

Re: New Site Logo

http://allanh.org/dmiessler.gif ?

Personally, I'm just not that big of a fan of that font (papyrus) ...

:) Happy New Year!!

Re: New Site Logo

LOL--Gee, aren't you a nice person! All of my pages have loaded nice and fast since just after I pointed this out to you. Maybe there's a cache effect that takes a few days to kick in or something.

For us, the performance hit for a couple of days was definitely worth it as the stats provided are amazing. I run a store and for this in particular, Analytics just blows my mind. The ability to define a "sales funnel" identify where in the process that people bail is invaluable--as is the seemless tie in with adwords.

Re: PHP Includes, Yum

You've been blogging since 1996 and you've just discovered this? Adobe quasi-announcing no universal binary support until '07 kind of scares me a little bit, but I'm skeptical that they'll actually make us wait that long and since I don't really _depend_ on photoshop, I could live without it for a bit. Use groups! There are _a lot_ of quality news sources out there and once you start to amass more than 20 or so (I am currently subscribed to a little over 300 feeds) then it can absolutely become cumbersome to trudge through them all at any given time. So, categorize! Then collapse the folders so you're not looking at all the different sources.

2. Prioritize! Netnewswire has a cool feature that allows you to set the refresh time on individual feeds. If you're subscribing to a feed that is of interest to you, but that you don't need to keep up on _every_ day, then don't. Change the refresh parameters to only check for new content every 72 hours.

3. "Mark All As Read" is _your friend_. Learn to use it wisely. If you have a "Fun" group with 20 feeds set to refresh every two days, and all of a sudden you have a group with 120 new items in it, don't be afraid to _skim_ the headlines and then "Command + K" it. It can almost seem like a waste to aggregate a bunch of information that you don't even read, but sometimes you just have to hit reset rather than get bogged down.

4. Dinosaurs. Though it is somewhat hidden, and doesn't have a keyboard shortcut :'(, the dinosaurs feature of Netnewswire lets you see feeds that haven't refreshed recently, possibly indicating that the source has been abandoned. Use it. Use it well. Nuke feeds that you don't need.

Any other tricks?

Re: Buddhism

I think you should take your edit out. It's a huge improvement over my second gen. 12" PowerBook :) The only thing that's taking some getting used to is the keyboard; I'm _so_ not used to having the extra realestate on the sides of the unit. I keep moving my hands to the outer edges and it throws off my typing. That, and my GMail notifier doesn't seem to want to work correctly, even though it's the Universal version. Whatever though. I don't play video games at all, so I can't relate to your impressions of Warcraft framerates--I needed the upgrade for the power to handle all of the RAW files I'm shooting these days :) All in all, I'm happy to have spent the money. Not that I distrust the ability of one man to change how everyone looks at the universe, it's just that I doubt that this is the case here.

http://realclimate.org/ has some educated response to the "it's solar!" argument, among other counter-points.

The thing that makes Anthropocentric Global Warming a Theory is that it is so well supported by many different facts, collected by many different scientists; all peer-reviewed and scrutinized. Of course the science is open to interpretation, and if there were enough evidence to warrant revising AGW, then I doubt scientists would have any issues with doing so. The problem is that they (climate scientists) have a lot of correlating data that leads them to dismiss, or at least marginalize, the solar factor.

As you noted, even if C02 turns out to be relatively innocuous as a global warming agent, we *still* must be looking to harvest all of that abundant solar energy being poured onto the planet in ridiculous excess, instead of burning fossils; it only makes sense.

:-)

Re: No, Einstein *Wasn’t* Religious

These are great quotes :) Thanks for publishing them. - A

Re: My Future: The Semantic Web and RDF

You wrote:
Hint: Think “semantic personal information exchange using RDF”.

This sounds promising, and I'd be interested to learn more about this as you proceed (no time to contribute however).

I'd be most interested to hear what you have to say about microformats (http://microformats.org), and how aspects of them such as hcard and hcalendar impact your vision. It's science; there's nothing really to believe or not believe. There's just a mass of evidence that suggest things to be one way or another. If this guy's assertions turn into real evidence that the current climate models are straight-up wrong, then we can recalculate, change the theory, and move on. It's not really about being right or wrong; it's about following the best hypothesis at the time.

What is Mr. Christie saying anyhow? That a few holes (of myriad) as yet to be explained invalidates most of the research out there? OK, what if they do? What does that mean? Mr. Christie seems to think that if we stopped spending all of this money on "global warming" and started building more schools in Africa that the future would suddenly be better for us?

Let me get this straight: because C02 doesn't drive climate change, that means that coal-burning electric plants and the internal combustion engines are suddenly cool again? That can't be what he means, but . . .

To what end are we arguing this? So we can stop investing in sustainable energy? Do we keep giving oil companies huge tax cuts? Because the service they provide is relevant?

Does it matter if our pollution is changing the global climate? It damn-sure alters local climates, and is just so plainly and obviously not good for us or our natural surroundings. How are C02 emissions good?

What does not believing in human-induced global warming gain us? did the problem go away? Maybe we're using different semantics, but the problem remains.

Considering how many more of us there are going to be, figuring out a way to power ourselves with perpetually renewable, non-polluting sources is the task of our time (or rather stopping the oil companies from suppressing the already existing technologies).

Maybe our pollution will cast us into another ice age; maybe we'll all fry; maybe the climate will remain stable, but we'll just slowly poison ourselves through the very food we eat.

All of this leads me to ask: Who cares what this guy says? It's not a controversy because even if it's true, it shouldn't change a damned thing except the semantics.

Re: Can We Vote For Ron Paul in the Primaries and Then a Democrat in the General Election?

To me, there's always been something strange about the very concept of 'strategic' voting. Personally, I think it does more damage to democracy in the long run by forcing homogenization; the lesser of two evils is still evil.

It's analogous to those who hold Ralph Nader responsible for Gore's defeat in the 2000 election: those who didn't really support Gore, but who voted for him anyway as an opposition to the republicans.

I think that forcing a two-party system in order to avoid the opposition is inherently un-democratic and does more to indict American-style democracy as a failure than having Bush in office in the first place.

I do think that you raise an interesting strategy here; that if there were to be a 'strategy' behind my vote (beyond simply voting for the best platform), that this would probably be it :) I like the idea of someone holding membership in both parties; it's a statement to the absurdity of the system.

Then again, I've been known to spoil my ballot by voting for everyone, so don't take my logic at face value ;) If I were a US citizen, I'd vote for Paul over any of the dems but Kucinich.

Re: Google: Why Can’t I Bookmark a Site From Google Reader?

I have it on good authority that new and cool features for this type of thing are coming down the pipes.

Re: This Doesn’t Happen in Countries That Aren’t Close to Social Collapse

Hey now, don't go painting anarchists with this brush.

If anything, this behavior you note is a symptom of unbridled capitalism; this type of thing wouldn't happen in an anarchistic society.

Personally, I'm not a true-blood anarchist, but I do think that anarcho-syndicalism is probably a better system than what we have:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarcho-syndicalist

I'm just tired of people labeling stupid, irrational behavior as "anarchy!". May I suggest that you edit your post to use "niche" instead? We'd thank you very much :)

As for why the (footbag) feed has so many subscribers: it's likely because it is included by default when you subscribe to the "Sports" package, along with EPSN.com.

My friend Steve runs footbag.org and happens to be the head manager for Reader. His engineers included the footbag.org feed into the pre-package as a show of support / joke.

Furthermore, as I'm sure you're aware, sometimes the best sites are not up 100% of the time. I would suggest that you simply caught the footbag feed at a bad time, as I've been getting regular updates from it (and recently at that), and it's working now to be sure.

I'm a big fan of this site (except when you dis my favorite sport ;)). Why is no one complaining about that?

It's not as if Reader claims that their bundles are algorithmically determined. What law has been broken? What's the big freakin' deal if a small non-profit sport gets a little extra coverage? Don't like it? Fewer annoying Flash-based sites? Great! Flash is straight-up bad for the web. Developers building sites in Flash should have their heads examined. The only real use for format is for video delivery (an inherently binary medium), and they've already proven that they can work around that issue by using a comparable (arguably superior) codec for that purpose. In fact, I hope they *don't* include Flash support. Can someone tell me how being able to view a Flash-based site on my iPhone is going to enrich my mobile experience? I just can't see it.

Re: 2008/06/12/social-media-delusions-of-grandeur/

Yes, I would want the president "twittering away" while in meetings.

Re: Is Your Website Cross Browser Compatible ? ; CSS, Html & Compatibility

IE4?

I'll be able to live with it, but (beside the other stuff you mention) it's the most annoying thing.

Re: Ten Out Of Ten Vegetarians…

We die anyways, Captain Obvious, but we do less violence to the planet while we are here, and provide for less-toxic fertilizer :-) That is, of course, unless you kill your own wild (and, debatedly, therefore organic) meat?

Re: Ten Out Of Ten Vegetarians…

I really should stop commenting on stuff, because I always get it wrong :) I know this is a joke . . .

Re: The Ultimate Content Filler

http://lipsum.org/ :)

Re: My Next Car Has Been Chosen

30 mpg?

Get an air car :-)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-A3XHFT5qc&...

Be sure to watch part 2, too:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dq8aZVLpf-c&...

In copying and pasting those links, I found a neat little keyboard shortcut in firefox I didn't know about: Option-clicking a link (on OS X) is a short cut to "Save Linked File As"; cool!

Re: Global Warming: Causation vs. Corelation

Personally, I'd have to say that I wouldn't be placing bets on this hypothesis.

If you read onto page 2 of the article, it does say:

"His views are completely at odds with the mainstream scientific opinion," said Colin Wilson, a planetary physicist at England's Oxford University.

"And they contradict the extensive evidence presented in the most recent IPCC [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] report."

As well as:

"Perhaps the biggest stumbling block in Abdussamatov's theory is his dismissal of the greenhouse effect, in which atmospheric gases such as carbon dioxide help keep heat trapped near the planet's surface."

The article (on page 2) also explains "planetary wobble" as a very plausible counter-point to this *single* study from this single man.

The reason why RSS and such are subsets of RDF is, by my understanding, a result of RDF being overly complicated for simple usage.

Re: Read This if You Believe in Man-Made Global Warming

Hey Daniel.

Why "believe" in anthropocentric global warming to begin with?
