Some things are generational. From such is nostalgia born. There are those amongst us for whom McQueen will always be cool. Or the best of the Rat Pack. Or Orson Welles, before Paul Masson and 400 pounds. Or Miles Davis. Or Roberto Clemente. Don't really want to own any of their stuff, but glad they were here and always will be.

I don't think she means she's relying on them, I think she means they're the ones she knows of, that's how I read it. Like, the ones we've been hearing about, the heads of banks, the heads of the auto industry, that's what I read into by her statement "not creating anything but more money". And not all right leaning people are great breadwinners either, if you look at some footage of people attending the rallies for McCain and Palin, you'll see a lot of right-leaning people.

in Battling Obama by ‘Going Galt’ on The Washington Independent
Is every breadwinner right leaning then? None of them have any other motivation, thoughts or world views? I'd better run and tell that business owning Columbia University Phi Beta Kappa, Columbia Law, SEC lawyer, business owning, hedge fund manager Obama voting brother of mine. That slacker. Kripes, I have a lot of emailing to do, my friend who trades stocks, her husband who owns a business, all voted for Obama. Another friend who does consulting for banks, better let him know. I'd better get busy. Oh, and darn, me. I forgot. I also have my own business.

I'm sure you are very good at what you do. There are a lot of good developers out there now, highly skilled with lots of knowledge, some whose salaries have been cut and jobs have been outsourced to India. I'm sure with a little knowledge transfer of your clients' specific business needs it would be smooth sailing for them in no time. I don't think there's any person out there who is irreplaceable.

Yes, there are people who are irreplaceable. Very few people, but some. Where would we be if Bill Gates didn't create Microsoft? Or Steve Jobs? Edison? Tesla? Einstein? Newton? Fermi?
Someone else may have come up with the idea, or something close to it, maybe. Maybe not. The people who invent, who produce, not who labor, those are the people who are important in society. The people who are always seeking to expand, to grow, to make new and more. They push the limits of society and push us all along. They are irreplaceable.
I'm replaceable in my job, I'm guessing you think you are too, but some people aren't. They are the John Galts of the world, and instead of punishing them for their success we should realize and appreciate that we stand on the shoulders of giants.

You think I'm whining and stomping my foot? I'm asking a question and trying to understand. Ultimately, my question really isn't "why didn't you leave when we needed you to" , if that's the part you're focusing on. I certainly don't expect anyone to take a stand for me and I really didn't mean that. I ask the question mainly because people here don't like big government, GWB really did grow the government, he really did send out stimulus checks and I'm just wondering why people weren't "going galt" then. A lot of people on this list on all sides have not supported Bush's policies, so I think it's a legitimate question.
What kind of a stand are you taking now, specifically?

Then where was the moral stand 3 or 5 years ago when Bush was in office creating the biggest government ever? Where was Campbell then? Where were people standing their ground against all the looting going on? The Patriot Act? All the borrowing and debt increase while pretending everything was smoothly humming along? I didn't want my money sent to the contractors in Iraq, there's a great big transfer of wealth right there. Where were the Galters making their stand against the thieves taking our money? Why didn't the Galters take their stand then, when really needed them to? Were they waiting to get their stimulus check from GWB first?

EVERY president in history has expanded government more than the one prior. EVERY president has made it worse. EVERY president has taken us farther away from the Constitutional ideal which this country is based on. When you argue in favor of any government programs of control, taxation and wealth redistribution, you are arguing against the Constitution, the USA and freedom.
TexasMirth
MEMBER OF SOCIETY -- You said you didn't want your money sent to contractors in Iraq, but you wanted OTHERS to take a stand for you. I didn't mind my money going to Iraq and I supported Bush...so, there was no reason for me to do your "standing" for you.
Stop whining and do something YOURSELF. You'll be amazed at how good it feels to take your own stand instead of demanding (and stomping your foot) that others DO SOMETHING!

Which losers do you mean who think they are inferior? There were many, many wealthy, brilliant people who voted for Obama. I would even go so far as to say the majority of wealthy, brilliant people voted for him, otherwise he wouldn't have won. Warren Buffet endorsed him and even said yesterday that we should stand behind him. Is he one of the losers you are referring to? Is it Colin Powell?
Haven't you been contributing to the distribution of wealth and thievery all along, all through the Bush years? You've been contributing to the contractors in Iraq, they've made tons and tons of money off your hard earned tax dollars. GW was the biggest thief of all, look around on this list, you'll see that everyone on all sides agree. The tax code that GW set up had a built in sunset clause in it of 2011, we all knew the break would end, so you can talk to your Republican representative about that.
You don't have to work if you don't want to, there's no gun to your head, if you feel that way, you are probably not well and should seek help. Who is standing over you with the gun?
It sounds like you are a believer in a very small federal government. That's absolutely fine, that's your belief. Consistency is important, though because I mean there are always stories about people who don't believe in social programs or universal health care yet received Social Security and Medicare themselves. I personally know 2 people like that.
What I want to know is, GW's administration grew the government so much, he borrowed so much money, he funneled so much to the contractors in Iraq, an enormous transfer of wealth over the years, all on my hard earned tax dollars and yours. He is the very definition of a looter so when did you "Go Galt"? 3 years ago? 5 years ago? it sounds to me like no one on this list was living by their principles then, sounds like they were taking what they could get.

I don't think it's stupid. I kind of think I did the same thing during the Bush administration because I didn't like his policies either. I think what is bothering me is the fact that so many of Bush's policies has led us to this place, the war, the lack of transparency, borrowing from other countries, sending out stimulus checks, and many people on this list on all sides have said the same. I understand also that many people on all sides have opted out or thought of opting out and have been vocal about it for years because of Bush's policies. What is bothering me personally is that it's just now that it seems that one of our leaders, who is supposed to be helping us out of a crisis, is instead promoting this idea by giving away the book. Although democrats had escapist fantasies also, like Bill Maher had his "Exit Strategy" bit, I don't recall our elected officials promoting the idea. I want to know if Campbell was doing that before. We didn't just wake up on 1/20/09 with this situation, it's been going on for a while. It' s only March 9th. It bothers me because it feels like Campbell's latching on to this gimmick to get everyone riled up. We're all riled up already, we don't need his help and I think he's being... a hypocrite. You can scream and insult me all you want, and I've had plenty of that on this list, but it's the way I see it. And I do not begrudge anyone their beliefs, I completely understand what you're saying.

I voted for Bush twice, he was the lesser of the evils that we had to choose from, but strongly disagreed with alot that he did, though the war was not one of them. I believed in '03 and even today that Iraq v2 was required for no other reason than to rid the world of Sadam and to finish what was not in 1991. The world is better off with Saddam 6 feet under. Your welcome to your own opinion on this.
I "shrugged" in early '08, I beleived that regardless of who won, we were headed for this mess. We've been headed here for 40+ years and I dont think anything can stop it. This is not a Republican vs. Democrat or even Rich vs. Poor. This is a generational war.
As a country we have been divided and subdivided, pitted against each other using labels and "wedge" issues. We are all firing at each other, while the real culprits stand to the side and sell us ammo and encourages the fight. I just choose not to fight anymore, you should do the same.
Let them have it. (You can define "them" however you want, you'll be right).

The ones that receive tax breaks by cities to attract them there, the ones that have done so well by us outsourcing jobs to other countries? The ones that have laid off employees and then pile the work on the remaining employees who have to work longer hours to make up for the missing staff without a promotion or raise? Those businesses?

well, then you weren't listening to the huge majority of conservatives who made this exact complaint, over and over again.. it fell on deaf ears... the things we don't like about Bush are not really even a short list, but running up deficits and giving away money and stuff to certain groups for political reasons are certainly at the top of that list.
Bush is a decent and good man who tried to do what he believed was right. He was not, and is not, a conservative. As always, politics renders our choices far narrower than we would like.

And here it seems our elected officials are promoting the idea. If Democrats tried to pull that one a few years ago when Bush was in office, they would have been labeled anti American. Now we're free to say what we want. Yay!

I agree with you all. I guess I did the same thing during the Bush years - reduced my salary because it seemed so wasteful to pay taxes and see all that money disappearing into Iraq and fattening the wallets of the contractors, i just didn't think of it that way.
I believe I understand what you're saying, you want government out of your life, you want the government to be reduced in size and you don't want to see the built in sunset clause on the tax code go into effect. You want to keep your hard earned wealth, decide where your money should go and leave well enough alone. I can completely appreciate that and see your point of view.
If your hard work isn't paying off for you any longer and you want to "Go Galt", you absolutely should. You're right. It may actually benefit to you to do so. You can spend more time with your families, pursue a hobby, learn a language, take care of your health and exercise and enjoy yourself. You deserve it, you absolutely do, take advantage of it, it's an opportunity. It could have the additional benefit of allowing you to live longer and healthier and possibly decreasing the need for prescription medication later on, saving you even more money. It's a very good thing.
One person who should set an example by doing this is Rush Limbaugh. He works really hard, makes a lot of money but he doesn't look well at all. He needs to address his eating problems and his health before he finds himself having a heart attack over a fettucini alfredo. He will be affected by the tax increase on his salary and he should also battle Obama by either reducing his salary, reducing his hours, or leaving the country because I am pretty sure he doesn't want his tax money going to the looters either.
Meanwhile, there are all kinds of people who make up this world and there are many world views. For every business owner who wants to contract their business, there is a business owner who will expand. There are many brilliant, creative people who voted for Obama, doctors, professors, scientists, business owners, entrepreneurs. Rightly or wrongly, they were done with the shenanigans of the previous administration and elected Obama. They will continue to work and earn and progress and be ambitious because they just look at things differently and are motivated differently.

I understand what you're saying.
My question still stands though, why people are complaining about big government now, when George Bush expanded the roll of government with things like the Patriot Act:
The Act increases the ability of law enforcement agencies to search telephone, e-mail communications, medical, financial, and other records; eases restrictions on foreign intelligence gathering within the United States; expands the Secretary of the Treasury’s authority to regulate financial transactions, particularly those involving foreign individuals and entities;
and so forth
I don't recall the Going Galt battle cry then, only now. Why now? Why not then when government's control was expanding and the level of spending unprecedented? Where were the senators with their copies of Atlas Shrugged then?
