in Speakers you shall find on the bounder
Always surprised that Philip Green has been so successful with TopShop, but has totally failed with BHS. The problem is it doesn't know who it is meant to be enticing through its doors...a bit like Littlewoods....it wants to be Marks and Spencers and can't admit it's Primark.

in You’re Doing it Wrong on Mojo Denbow
Nothing worse that the 'thank the sponsor' posts, but ads don't have to be bad. I have lost count of the times I have clicked on ads around my hotmail account as they are offering something I want. Personally I have two small ads on my blog pages, one from Amazon, which can be seen as value added as it shows books that may be of interest, and one GoogleAds which is pretty rubbish...but I live in hope that one day it will pay for the server space.

in Twitter API for the social graph (Scripting News) on Scripting News
828 calls doesn't sound like a very quick option as the API only allows 100 calls per hour.

in What If Apple Announces Next iPhone With 5MP Camera and Keyboard - Death of Nokia N97? on The Nokia Blog
If the hardware was the same I would choose the N97, no questions. Personally I like a bit more freedom than Apple is willing to offer; Apple is for the average user more interested in style, not for the serious technophile (unless you happen to be American and the attraction of a homegrown phone is just too much)

in Is a netbook a cheap laptop? (Scripting News) on Scripting News
I think 'small, cheap laptops' pretty much covers it....it is the size and and cheapness that allows the masses to use them in new ways, thus making them worthy of a new term....I wouldn't have my 701 constantly in my bag if it was bigger or more expensive

jhn Just today I stopped by the Best Buy to finally try to type on a netbook.

Man, if you need to do a lot of writing, a netbook isn't it. And for quick emails and web browsing, my iPhone is more than enough.

So-- less portable than the iPhone. Harder to type on than a regular laptop.

in Facebook: Wake Up! on AllFacebook
The blogosphere amplifies everything, Facebook was never as good as the blogosphere said, and now its not as bad. Facebook were never going to get the whole of the Social Networking pie and the events of the last week have just emphasised that.

Digg?? Are you kidding? Surely its had its day and any buyer would be left with one of the most troublesome bunch of users the web has

in Facebook Application Sale Disappoints on AllFacebook
Eventually someone will pay serious money for an application, creators merely need to focus on business model rather than on the number of active users.

As other social networks increasingly incorporate user applications, investors will be looking for applications that have established a foothold in numerous networks. Focussing purely on Facebook would be a bad investment

in Fastest Growing Facebook Group Now Has A Million Members on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
"the strongest example of social network usage for political promotion yet"??...or should that be yet this race so far.

Is joing a Facebook group really on a par with the Dean/Trippi momentum of 2003?

Stan_Schroeder It's not only joining a Facebook group. It's one million people joining the group in 7 days.
Andrew Parker Seconded. Getting 1mm Facebook members to sign up for a group is a distant second to raising millions of dollars in small $20 contribution increments and loads blogging on DeanSpace.

I don't think merely buying Facebook will prevent the bubble that seems increasingly likely, it will merely feed it.

Yes there has been less coverage and hype about YouTube since it was bought, but the hasn't gone away, merely moved onto other topics, i.e., facebook. The web 2.0 bubble is going to keep going for a while yet, and if Facebook is bought for an outrageous sum it can only feed it more.

Pete I suspect there is some truth to the theory that an acquisition would have killed some of the hype. It's the long term possibility of an IPO that means there's really no end to where the hype will stop.

The only thing we can say for sure is that they are not offering it to the millions of users who have built the value of the company

...although personally I am on a twelve step program to deal with a Facebook affliction and wouldn't touch it with a barge-pole

in 2007/10/18/microsoft-popfly/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Whilst it allows for the non-technically minded to create mash-ups, Popfly also encourages the programming of blocks which other users can then use as well...so I think its better than pipes. The only downside is that I found the mashups to run quite slowly.
