They have to remain nameless. They don't advertise their design advantage, but they certainly understand the benefits. No formal 2D drawings are used, it's great!

Devon T. How many times have you heard this: Make a new drawing of this new Bracket B just like this old drawing of Bracket A (Brackets A Bracket have completely different shapes)use all the same notes(lots of notes), revison block, title block...etc.

Here's what I do; I Open the old drawing of Bracket A, then, I Save The Sheet Format; with the name Format Bracket A. Now, this Sheet Format will have all the Notes, Title Block, Revision Block, Annotations, etc.

I Open a New Drawing, Insert the Views of Bracket B, Edit the Sheet Format, Window Select and Delete the Title Block, Border, Revison Block, etc. Next, RMB the Sheet Properties and Select the Sheet Format A. And there you have it. All the desire Notes and Annotations from the old drawing are now in the new drawing.

Cheers,
Devon

Re: Time-saving Tip for Re-using SolidWorks Drawings

Jason-

RE:"If you just RMB to Sheet Properties and select your desired sheet format, it removes the old sheet format for you. I can bring up the image of my house, but when I go to add a 3D model and the Dassault 3D Via application is invoked, the 3D Via image shown is 200-300 yards away from the image in the Microsoft application. No matter how many times I try to get the 3D Via image to match the Microsoft image, it won't.

Devon

Re: 3DVia and Virtual Earth Join Hands

Hi Josh-

Rotating the 3D Via view to align with the grid is clunky, but doable. Again, the 2 images are always different. First I get the image of my house, then when the 3D Via image opens, it is 200-300 yards south(for example). So, I adjust my house image about 200-300 north and open the 3D Via image. Now, it is 200-300 WEST(for example). I give up after 4 or 5 tries. Both applications start to Hang, anyway.

Another half-baked beta application, IMHO.

Devon

Re: The Thumb Wrestling Continues

Hi Josh-

Another great post. Their time to market was incredibly fast. We would design something and have metal prototypes within 2-3 days! We had full confidence in our CAD files because of the system we used to check them. Someday (maybe soon) I'll write a book about this method.

Devon

Re: Why Smart Numbers are Dumb: SolidWorks Guidelines for File Names

Hi Josh-

I hate sequential numbers! Ah, I feel better now.

I started out in the 1970's working for first the Suzuki Motorcycle Factory, then I went to work for the Honda Motorcycle Factory, then later Nissan. They all used "super intelligent numbers". I LOVE these types of numbers! BOMS!? We don't need no stinkin' BOMS! The Part Number IS the BOM. For example, these companies denote the Year, Make, Model, Sub-Model, Color, Material, Factory and REVISION right in the number. So, if I'm holding a Crankshaft in my hand and I know the type of car it belongs to, I can GUESS the correct Part Number close enough to find it right away. Conversly, If I see a Part Number, I KNOW the correct Year, Make, Model, SuB-Model, Color, Material, Factory and Revision.

See, aren't these great?

Who has more Part Numbers than Honda? Toyota? Yep, they use them too.

Devon

Re: Why Smart Numbers are Dumb: SolidWorks Guidelines for File Names

Hello J.D.-

SolidWorks Explorer will copy a Project just like you need (with renaming), check it out.

Devon

Re: Why Smart Numbers are Dumb: SolidWorks Guidelines for File Names

Josh-

RE Reusability;

Parts can have more than one Part Number. Just rename all the supporting files to the new Part Number. This is the way Suzuki, Honda, and Nissan do it. So, Parts can have more than one Part Number, so what? Then in the supporting documents, just show the parts are equal.

In my opinion, all the work either goes into the BOM (which by the way NEVER matches what's acutally being built) or the work goes into the Part Number, which has it's own intelligence built in, which takes the burden away from the BOM.

Remember, in SolidWorks, the file name IS the Part Number (in the SolidWorks BOM, leverage this data!). This applies to SolidWorks, PDMWorks Workgroup, and PDMW Enterprise.

Last year, I set up a medical device company using PDMWorks Workgroup and Agile. The Part Number with Revision is shown right in the file name.

Great post, Josh.

Devon

Re: Why Smart Numbers are Dumb: SolidWorks Guidelines for File Names

Hi Bruce-

If Honda, Suzuki, Nissan and Toyota aren't scared, then neither am I.

Devon

Re: PTC Goes History-Free, Buys CoCreate

Co-Create! Yuck! I was unlucky enough to have to use Co-Create when working on projects for H-P (pre Carly, of course). I took a one week training course in 2005 (or was it 2004?) and I was given a temporary seat to use.

I haven't used it since late 2005, but back then it was a real piece of work. It was totally ass backwards from SolidWorks. What I remember is the huge headache I got everyday during training, the huge amount of mouse clicks it took to do anything, and most amazingly, the fact that BY DEFAULT, Drawings ARE NOT LINKED to their models! It took a half a dozen clicks to link the Drawing to the Model. The User Interface looked like AutoCAD 13.

The last of day of class, the Trainer took me aside. He wasn't all that happy working for Co-Create and he told me SolidWorks was "killing them". He asked if I could teach him SolidWorks. I said "sure" but I never heard from him.

Cheers,
Devon

Re: PTC Goes History-Free, Buys CoCreate

Well, there was one good thing about Co-Create, there were 2 versions, one for Windows and one for UNIX. We used the UNIX version, and that O.S. was sweet.

I remember one guy telling me he had never crashed or lost any data since his machine was new, 3 years ago. To me, the glass is half empty. What I see coming is a new release that will be riddled with bugs and problems. I cringe at the task of applying 5 Service Packs again (I’d rather go to the Dentist than apply another frickin’ Service Pack). Every year fewer and fewer of my customer upgrade, they’re just burned out and want to spend time designing parts not managing SolidWorks.

I guess I rained on the parade, but that’s my opinion.

Beta Testing? I don't have time for that, I've a family to support. So, I have to purchase the software, pay for support and 'Fix' it for free? I think not! SolidWorks should pay experts and power users to do that.

Devon

Re: SolidWorks Fires Up The 2009 Beta Furnace

I get angry when I even think about Beta Testing. Real time F.E.A. in the SolidWorks U.I.

2. The ability to create CNC Code on the fly in SolidWorks. Another view on this, in SolidWorks I specify a specific CNC Machine (HAAS model xxx). Then, I load a chunk of Material into the virtual machine. Then I select a Face, chose to Drill a Hole for example, and in SolidWorks the correct Tool is chosen and it drills the Hole. The Tool Selection and G Code are created at the same time.

3. Real time Electrical Circuit creation; build a PCB, load the components, apply 'electrical power' and see the results. Is the desired current generated?

4. Of my 29 plus clients, 2 use 2008, that I know of anyway.

Here's what I see; the longer a customer has been using SolidWorks, the less likely they are to use the lastest version. The "bloom is off the rose" so to speak for long time users. Remember, most users feel that upgrading is an expensive task, one that can't be charged to a specific project...same for Service Packs.

Devon

Re: Google Makes the Future of 3D CAD… Lively

"Jeez Bullwinkle, another web based environment? After 9 1/2 years of upgrading and applying scores of Service Packs, I'm burned out on the whole process. SolidWorks continues year after year, to release software that has not been tested. For example, 2009 Weldments, Edit or Create a new Weldment Profile, the Profile Preview does not appear. There is no excuse for this at all.

I want to design parts and assemblies. I don't want to test software nor discover and report bugs. I don't want to apply 5 (or more) Service Packs every year. I don't want a new version every 12 months.

Devon T. We all know that SolidWorks won't run on native Apple computers unless the new Windows "Boot Camp" is installed on the new Intel based machines. I wonder what new information "may" be coming?

Cheers,
Devon T. I just find it interesting that a person connected directly with Apple would speak at a software conference whose software won't run on his product unless the users "jump thru some hoops."

Devon

Re: Steve Wozniak to be Keynote Speaker at SolidWorks World 2007

OK, here's my best guess. SolidWorks includes "Boot Camp" with SolidWorks. I don't play computer games, so I'm not familar with any game User Interfaces.

In my area, SoCal, internet speeds, in general, are too slow to support resource intensive applications. My DSL speed varies considerably and cable internet starts at $100.00 per month and goes up to $750.00 per month, very expensive. Wireless, while plentiful, is also quite slow in San Diego.

Another question, what if an internet connection is not available? Would a local machine install still be required? If so, it would run so must faster than a Cloud application.

Thanks for sharing,
Devon

Re: Getting Started

Hello Gabi-

Welcome to the SolidWorks Blog Squad. A robust SolidWorks Model is one where the Design Intent is obvious and it's important Features are easily changed.

Cheers,
Devon

Re: The Iterative Process of Learning

Hi Gabi-

Another Tip is to become familar with CNC Machining and the software applications, such as MasterCam, that support controlled machining.

Many of my Parts do not have Drawings. I send the 3D models to the machine shop. So, the SolidWorks Part file needs to be created so the CNC software can easily recognize Features, such as fillets, chamfers and counterbores.

Cheers,
Devon

Re: It’s just like the other one, but…

Hello Gabi-

Good job on the Configurations.

However, I don't recommend Configurations for Custom Parts; off the shelf Parts like Nuts and Bolts, no problem.

Here are three simple reasons, there a a few more too;

Part Files with mutiple Configurations have large File Sizes. When used in Assemblies/Drawings, performance is not good.

Configuration Names; these remind me of AutoCAD "Layer" Names. To the person that creates them, they have meaning, to another User, they usually are very confusing.

Finally, the problem I've seen at many of my Clients is this; In a Drawing, and it's Views, How do you know "which" Configuration is Displayed and then, Is it the correct Configuration? How do you know? One of my Clients had an exsiting Assembly, each Component Part had mutiple Configurations,, the top Level Assembly had over 60 different configurations, each with a "vague" name. the Creator of this Assembly no longer worked there. No one knew which Configuration was the correct one!

Devon

Re: It’s just like the other one, but…

I like to do this;

One file, with one Part Number, with one Drawing.
