Classic TV right there. I still laugh when I catch it on Lifetime. I was definitely saddened by the news.

Katie Couric needs to shut up. I'm sick of this sexism is worst than racism crap. If you want to talk about sexism go ahead but no need to compare it to racism. When law enforcement starts beating the crap out of her being a woman then she can compare. And thats not to say that women arent beaten for being women (meaning men do it because they can) but its not done by law enforcement.

Kwame and Christine can get the same treatment as Marion Jones and Martha Stewart.

Re: Grown Woman

Thank you, thank you for not only speaking about it on the blog but making that step to do something. I think there is just too much talking in the blogosphere. There are a lot of little things we can do but I think people think making a difference requires life-altering changes or a lot of time.

I remember the blogs going crazy over a white valedictorian at Morehouse but I wonder how many of us see a kid with potential and even slow down a bit to give a little advice.

One of my Upward Bound students was a ninth grader. She wants to be a lawyer and go in business. I told her about doing a dual program, the LSAT, getting the highest grades possible from her first semester in college (four years away) and gave her a bunch of view books from different law schools. She might have been a bit overwhelmed but so many of our kids with the biggest dreams don't know the people they are competing with kids who have parents and mentors who do take time with them from high school and in some cases middle school.

I went to school with a white female who before she had applied to law school spent countless years in the professional/corporate environment, sat in on staff meetings, prepared witnesses for trial, read/proofread briefs, and was mistaken for co-counsel by a judge during a trial. Her mom was a doctor and I think her dad was a lawyer.

All of us who have this determination to see improvement in the Black community need to stop talking about it and realize we're the ones who can help these kids. This was way too long I'm sure but again, THANK YOU MSMARVALUS. What you're doing is beautiful.

Re: I Got A Headache

I'm so sick of all this whining around the blogosphere about the CNN special. If it were all good news the same people would say its CNN's way of trying to pretend there are no injustices in the country directed towards Black people. Truth is, its hard to make something completely balanced and perfect. If you do, then its probably crap anyway.

I read about that preacher. It was one of those stories that left my mouth open. I couldn't wrap my head around the evil that is that man.

As far as Luda, Black people of all people should know everything they do reflects on all Black people. And anything an Obama supporter does will be seen as something Obama represents or approves of.

And every time Obama comes out and rips one of his supporters a new one for saying stupid things like this I agree. You don't owe loyalty to stupidity and ignorance.

Re: The10Spot: Tomorrow Is Not Promised

I love thoughtful gifts. I've said how I feel about that on my blog. But what cracks me up is this is from the man who would rather lose an election than lose a war and that the VP has to be ready to lead should something happen to the president.

The phone number thing. I just tell them. One time this guy said, "Okay I'll give you my number." I said as politely as I could, "No thank you, because I won't use it." My mother said I was so mean. Eh. After starting "Tradition of Excellence" trust me, I know there is no shortage of good news that hits my inbox every day.

Re: The10Spot: Everything She Wants

From SI:

Florida State professor Sally Karioth bought two cards to give her prized pupil Saturday; one for good news and one for bad. Had Myron Rolle opened the bad-news card, it would have played the old Band-Aid jingle.

That card will remain stuck in its envelope. When Rolle, FSU's starting free safety, opened the good-news card, it blasted that Tag Team classic, "Whoomp, There It Is." And that probably marked the first and last time Tag Team will serenade a freshly minted Rhodes Scholar.

Rolle, a junior who earned his bachelor's degree in 2 1/2 years, now has the opportunity to join a club that includes former President Bill Clinton and former New York Knicks star and U.S. senator Bill Bradley. He was one of two Rhodes scholars selected from 13 candidates in District 7, which comprises Florida, Alabama and Tennessee. There are 32 Rhodes Scholars elected each year. Rolle is the first BCS conference starter to win a Rhodes Scholarship since Stanford tight end Cory Booker in 1992. Booker now is the mayor of Newark, N.J.

Rolle said he wasn't nervous for his interview early Saturday afternoon.

"It's almost like a game," he said. "You practice, practice, practice, and when the lights come on, you show what you're made of."

The scholarship will pay for two to three years of tuition, room and board at Oxford. Rolle has said he likely would study medical anthropology at Oxford.

After hearing the good news, Rolle hopped into an SUV, which took him to Birmingham International Airport. There, he boarded a jet bound for Baltimore. Upon landing, Rolle will travel to College Park, Md., where he will hopefully arrive in time to play the remainder of the Seminoles' game against Maryland.

Re: Good News Tuesday

No MM, thank you for joining in. I was hoping someone could help me understand. I don't know what his monthly child support was but its not as much as she was responsible for I'm sure. I think its rare that disadvantaged women used child support money to live a glam life. You have rent (if you didn't have a kid you could live in a smaller, cheaper place.) Daycare, child needs and when they get older they need clothes, etc. They want to go on field trips, they want to do things with their friends, they want to participate in activities. For men who have concerns document, take pictures, put the system on the women the way they did it to you. You can't lose your mind about it because 1- you should be out of the money anyway and 2-be concerned enough to fight for full custody. But I'm pretty #2 ain't going to happen with a lot of these guys who whine about child support.

As far as I'm concerned he didn't want to pay child support nor did he want or know how to be a father. You are right Marv, he didn't want this responsibility.

Re: Good News Tuesday: Mr. Clark

Oprah puts her money where her mouth is. From where I sit, that’s simply unrealistic. The goal here is to talk about race in America with renewed energy, compassion and candor.

I think many people enter into conversations about race hoping that they will end it. To me, that is unrealistic and disheartening; it leads to people becoming frustrating and not wanting to have the discussion anymore. There is no quick fix to making things better and there is no fix to ending intolerance and racism.

I'm glad I found your site (through the NPR link from Jack and Jill Politics).
