The anti-car movement is gaining momentum at last. I'm even planning on dumping my car when I move to Chicago and relying on bike foot and public transit to get things done. When I need a car, I'll rent or borrow one.

I think that in many cities, having a car is a luxury, but in the rest of the country it is an unfortunate necessity. Pollution aside, cars are dangerous and expensive. They're also a status symbol.

It's a tricky thing to try and figure out. I try not to judge people for driving their cars, I just try to figure out a way to escape from having to drive my own, you know? As far as cars in national parks.... I think it's important to have good access to things. People who like nature are often old timers that don't get around too well. And families with kids. It's also bad to bring car noises and fumes into nature preserves, but as cars progress they emit fewer and fewer particulates. One park I went to in Croatia had it's own mass transit system, so that people could reach remote areas, but without having any of their own cars in the park. That's a nice compromise, I think.

Actually, I think walking is the most sustainable and healthy way to get around. It's also safer, and slightly cheaper.

Bikes are faster and more fun. They aren't a reality in Las Vegas. While my neighborhood has bike lanes, road construction has forced cars into them. The fact that they don't really go anywhere except to the WalMart and Starbucks and not to my job, 25 miles away, means that they're more of a political statement than a useful addition to our choices for commuting.

I appreciate where you're coming from, of course. I yearn for a car-free lifestyle. Driving causes anxiety and aggression in me. Plus, it's somewhat expensive, but less than $2000 a year all told, I think. One day, I'll escape the automobile paradigm.

About the topping off thing... Just push the metal flap inside the pump where the nozzle hangs. It'll shut off the meter, but allow you to drain the remaining fuel out of the pump hose.

Temperature is probably not significantly important, because the underground fuel tanks maintain their temperature through geothermals. Tanks are usually sitting a couple feet underground, beneath 6" of concrete, surrounded by earth with a constant core temperature. Heat rises and fuel is pumped from the bottom of the tank, thus rendering this argument all but null from where I'm looking.

As for fulling up when the tank is half full. I'd call bullshit on this one too, for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that one gets better fuel economy when there's less weight in the car. By not letting the car get down towards empty, one is missing out on the opportunity for maximum fuel economy. Secondly, filling up with gas takes time, and time is money (to some people). Therefore, the less time wasted at the pump, the better. I will admit, however, that neither of these things really makes any difference in the long run. But then again, nore do any of these gas saving tips.

No offense, but I don't take car advice from a bicyclist ;)
