the most important short-term goal for the hoosiers is to keep the returning players. the most important long-term goal is finding the perfect coach to fit their storied program. i think it's a major loss to have a kid of ebanks caliber back out, but it would be more of a loss to lose players already in uniform.

mcgee only had about 2 min of pt before that missed dunk in iowa too, so i can't blame him for wanting to get on the stat sheet with an open-look break-away...

he had a more positive impact on the game than eric gordon...sure gordon scored 20-some points, but he also had his usual large-batch of turnovers and was pathetic from the field. taber, if he weren't afraid to shoot would have had much more of an impact on this game if he were given all of gordon's shots. i think even taber would have produced a better fg% than the "below 20%" that gordon had.

i agree, he's not ready for the nba...but he'll go anyway because they've already made him out to be the next lebron. in my opinion, he makes far too many mistakes and he doesn't know how to use the mid-range jumper. he shoots too much and that is why he leads the league in scoring. give armon bassett that many shots every night and he might be the league's leading scorer...he is certainly more accurate and makes far fewer mistakes (traveling, offensive fouls, and carrying the ball) than gordon. what i am most impressed with gordon's game is his defense and ability to get to the line. other than that, i think he is an above-average player with a little too much hype.

Russ I completely agree with you, however, I'm not so sure he's an automatic 1 and done. I think that he may stay depending on who Indiana brings in as the next head coach. His father also seems like a great guy that wants the best for his son. They both have said how they think his education is the most important thing for him at this point in his life. We'll just have to wait and see I guess.
JamesHardy's picture
JamesHardy i sat through the game yesterday with a "fairweather fan" who was HATING on Taber. His chief complaint was that Taber was "afraid" to shoot. I think that is COMPLETE B.S.!!!! Taber is the smartest guy on the 3 man team of DJ, AB, and Taber. He's looks to involve his teammates (i.e. EJ, JC) who like to shoot and "get mine" Taber could average 6-9 points per game if he WANTED to (and if DD would play him!) He chooses to play TEAM BASKETBALL which is what we've all been clamoring for all season.

unless dakich learns who his senior leader is, and until he demands the ball go through dj when the game is on the line(especially on a night when the backcourt is shooting like a middle school b-team line-up), i think they will be a one-and-done team. it is clear that dakich should not be invited back next year. it doesn't take much brain power to make the decision to send the ball through white when trying to close out the game when eric gordon is shooting 4-16 on the night from too far downtown! i was disgusted they got beat, and even more disgusted that they didn't place the ball and the fate of the team in dj's hands down the stretch...i'm lost as to why not...

unfortunately there is a hierarchy in college sports. the ncaa wins over any university whenever they want. this particular episode is not the fault of the ncaa. iu had their shot to end this problem earlier. instead, they simply placed sanctions on sampson and certain assistant coaches. if what they felt sampson had done was worthy of termination they should have fired him early on, and not fire him now just because that's what the ncaa wants.

realize too that there is a very integral part to this whole investigation and decision-making process, and that is that iu had to follow strict guidelines in order to keep themselves from a lawsuit...which could be why sampson wasn't "had" directly following the original announcement of violations presented to the ncaa by the university itself this past fall.

DAKICH NEEDS TO LET SIX PLAYERS PLAY IN EVANSTON. THE REMAINDER OF THE TEAM SHOULD SIT THE BENCH REGARDLESS OF THE SCORE. GIVE THOSE THAT ARE OBVIOUSLY HERE TO PLAY FOR IU A CHANCE TO COMPETE.

IT IS TIME, RIGHT NOW (FROM THE GET-GO) FOR DAKICH TO LET THE TEAM KNOW THAT THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSES TO MISS A PRACTICE BEFORE A BIG TEN CONTEST WHEN THE CHAMPIONSHIP IS ON THE LINE.

LET AHFIELD, TABER, FINKELMEIER, MIKE WHITE, LANCE STEMLER, AND ERIC GORDON SHOW THE SELECTION COMMITTEE JUST HOW DEEP THE HOOSIERS ARE.

I GUESS THIS TEAM OF "TRUE HOOSIERS" ALSO NEEDS TO SHOW THEIR TEAMMATES THAT THEY ARE HERE TO PLAY WITH OR WITHOUT THE STARTERS. MAYBE THIS ACT ALONE WILL TRIGGER A MUCH NEEDED (and i don't blame the other players for needing it)) ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT.

LET THE SIX-MAN-ROSTER PROVE THEY'RE CAPABLE OF PULLING THEIR TEAM OUT OF A TOUGH CIRCUMSTANCE BY WINNING ON THE ROAD AND MAKING THE HOOSIER FAITHFUL UNDOUBTEDLY MORE PROUD THAN EVER.

KEEP A SIX-MAN-ROSTER IN EVANSTON...it's only right to the players that gave their time to prepare for what is a very important game (every game for the remainder of the season is far too important for any player to be missing any practices regardless of the circumstances...INDIANA UNIVERSITY PAYS THEM A SCHOLARSHIP TO PRACTICE AND PLAY BASKETBALL AND NOTHING LESS SHOULD BE EXPECTED OF THEM).

if anyone has an insider's influence on dan dakich, please let him hear my claim!

let the six eligible and healthy players play against northwestern. let the remainder of the team know that it doesn't matter what the situation is, if you have a scholarship to play for iu then you have a commitment to the university and its fans to show up for practice.

LET THE SIX-MAN-ROSTER TAKE A SHOT AT NORTHWESTERN IN EVANSTON!

IF THEY WIN WITH ONLY SIX PLAYERS, THEN ESPN IN MY OPINION HAS TO MOVE THEM UP IN BRACKETOLOGY AT LEAST TO A NUMBER THREE SEED IN THE TOURNEY.

if these other kids are serious about not playing, then i encourage it. i hope they beat the crap out of northwestern and then when the other players want to return dakish says, "no, not untll you've been trough a week of practice"...therefore allowing these players with rare minutes an opportunity to play two games.

taber and white could beat northwestern down low...i really think so...the question is can the guards keep up with the defensive stops from the perimeter. i think they can, honestly.

if i were dakich i would keep the starters out as long as possible tomorrow night and let those that showed up for practice play the game.

this is iu basketball, and it's time dakich shows them what it's all about. you don't skip practice and not play...PERIOD!!!! i don't care what the excuse is...give credit to those who did show up (including gordon and stemler who i am probably most proud of).

by the way, i've been a softie for bassett and white all year...but i must say, i am all about seeing lance stemler, mike white, and eric gordon do well now...and that isn't meant to leave out taber, ahfield, finklemeijer, and the rest of the gang who i hope do extremely well too...i'm all for those kids like the "tom coverdales" who will play for the sake of the university and the state of indiana regardless of the coach!

...go TRUE hoosiers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if dj white doesn't show up for tomorrow night's game he has completely lost my excitement for a big ten p.o.y. coming from indiana unless it happens to be kyle taber or eric gordon. i have no tolerance for crybabies regardless of the situation................

..........okay, if you have a brother, sister, mother, or father overseas at war then i understand...but if you are crying over a coach then i don't have any sympathy. if you want to give sympathy where sympathy is due then give it to those of us who never gave up, stuck it out, and earned a college diploma (regardless of the odds) and (without the taxpayers from the state of indiana giving us a scholarship) to PLAY A GAME WE LOVE.

i'll probably be hated on again for voicing my opinion. let me say right here and right now....i want these players to finish out the season because i see the potential for a surprise to the tournament's committee as well as other teams invited to march madness. iu has a shot at a final four spot...i truly believe with the right attitude they will make it. AND I WOULD WANT NOTHING MORE THAN TO HAVE DJ WHITE LEAD HIS TEAM TO A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP but if players don't show up tomorrow night then i say let those who did show up at practice finish off the season...it's only fair. dj white has his chance to continue to be one of my all-time favorite hoosiers (right up there with tom coverdale and aj moye of semi-recent) if he chooses to try. if he doesn't, then he's quickly knocked down to a "jay edwards type-of-player"...and i mean that.

no, these kids don't deserve what happened to them, but they should deal with it. i sure wish my college education was payed for. if it were, then i wouldn't be paying on it for what seems the rest of my life.

my comment as well as many others was a matter of...if they decide to leave. if they decide to leave then all of these fans have every right to say good riddance, just as you are suggesting that players have every right to voice their opinions.

i for one, think that losing any of the players could be detrimental to the team. i would hate to see it happen, but like i stated earlier...i highly doubt it happens. if it does it won't be on the grand scale that the media is describing.

in Sources via Parrish: Sampson not bowing out gracefully; Players threaten to quit on Inside the Hall
thank you td...FINALLY, SOMEONE TRULY UNDERSTANDS THE COMPLEXITY OF THIS WHOLE SHEBANG!

my opinion with the players leaving is simple...

ahfield and taber wouldn't leave...they are walk-ons who are playing without scholarships because it was a dream!

dj white wouldn't leave...he's stuck it out this long and this is his season to do something spectacular on a personal level...like win a big ten p.o.y. or more.

eric gordon wouldn't leave...he's already thinking about the nba and i doubt he'll be willing to wait two more years to see this happen...he needs to play one year of college basketball and if he transfers he'll be sitting idle on a bench for one year before he can complete this one-year commitment.

lance stemler may leave...sampson gave him more playing time than he deserved, so he probably loves the man.

either way, if any of these players leave i know what the university should do...

DON'T ALLOW ANY OF THEIR COLLEGE CREDITS TO TRANSFER OR MAKE THEM PAY THE UNIVERSITY BACK FOR THEIR SCHOLARSHIPS! I HATE QUITTERS!
