A giant percentage of AIDS victims are in Africa. A large number of those are children who contracted the disease from their parents. A great number of people are carrying HIV or even have HIV AIDS and don't even know it. This is a much greater problem/issue than just Gay sex and a little shot. People are very uninformed and ignorant, and from recent conversations are choosing to stay that way. We need to inform adults and children alike and I believe the "church" better step it up, or as Bono says, "..the church will becom irrelevant."
By the way, what does "pre-empt" mean in this sense?

When I think of leaving, I think of the intangible. Sure, a house for cheap is great, but what about irreplace-ables (sp)? Think of the family and friends, (us, sniff sniff). No, really I cannot imagine leaving here without many of of the people who are here. What would my $300,000 house be without all the people who make up my family, whether it be biological or otherwise? So many things... Just something to think about. I think the main point of what was said was that God prepares a place for us, when the place is ready, he receives us as a host receives their guest when they arrive. The point was also that people say dumb things like "God needed another angel" and "God wanted to use him in heaven" and those types of things don't make any sense. God was using him on earth just fine, but his place was ready in His father's house.

I still can't figure out why people are so intent on owning a house. I never heard anyone talking about it as much a few years back when average houses were in a decent price range. I can tell you this, I would give up our "fake world" for the "real world" of mortgage payments any day...you all can have my living situation. There are somethings that are not even worth getting for free. Seems you all are sure intent on money and having things. Here, have mine.

Ok...some of that came out wrong or through the computer filter: misunderstood. I didn't ever say anyone was trying to take anything from me...just that sometimes having a "place of your own" is not all it is cracked up to be. I rented for a very long time and honestly, would gladly go back today. But, I guess my situation is unusual. Maybe it is just the extra people I live with that make me mentally unsound and I would actually enjoy my home if it were TRULY mine. I never said you shouldn't have a house, but I guess I get tired of the complaints of Ventura prices.

You think you can afford NYC over Ventura? Hmmm. The majority of Venturans like it the way it is, that is why it stays this way. There have been many votes to make it more industrial, but they are always shot down. This isn't a personal remark, and I really don't want anyone to leave, but if you hate it they way it is, then go. I always hear people saying this stuff, but no one ever actually leaves. And do we need another La or NYC? And by the way, who are all these people living in these houses and buying all the new ones they keep building? Somebody must be ok with it.

Yeah, but Dave, there has to be an answer, else the western-civilization-life-stype will doom the planet. But it won't be only one new energy source...unless the Japanese do figure out cold fusion. It is likely all be using multi source energy for "life" sooner rather than later. And yes, dare I say it, changing our life habits too.

Unleavened gloom makes people fatalistic, and quit trying.

FYI- a power strip to turn off the TV, record player, computer monitors, and printer overnight saved measurable electricity. It was easy too! Didn't have any more lightbulbs to swap out.

20 years ago my father was excited about solar panel shingles, but figured he couldn't wait for them to do the barn roof. Now he is frustrated because again he would like to do it, but the product is still a prototype. I would have loved to use the theoretical vinal siding that has solar cell covering, again, still theoretical after 10 years. We use 5-700 kw / month. A few, small, alt. devices would make a huge dent. But they need to come off the drawing board and go into production. Whose lifetime?

I come down on the hypnotically beautiful side of the argument. The Tug Hill wind farm in New York is spectacular. Given that much of the land under the towers is used by very successful dairy farmers convinces me they are not noisy or disruptive. Cows don't give milk if they are not happy and content.

Similarly I know Dutch people who have sailed around the North Sea wind farms and they too find them beautiful.

Those Livermore people should have realized all the power generated will be used so there is room for all.

Cheap DSL was a wonderful upgrade from dial-up over rural copper lines. To pooh-pooh further upgrades to DSL in favor of holding out for new physical fibre optic lines to be run would be nuts and would doom vast chunks of the population to never getting any improvement, much less state-of-the-art.

My mom lives in Center Twp, and has for 55 years. She cannot afford to move and I cannot afford to move her. Besides she will not move because this is HER home. She lives off of Washington and State street. She has been shot at and her neighbor sitting next to her was shot. I know the main problem is drugs and hookers. For every place the police shut down 2 open up. If the powers of this city would just "get it" and see that the drugs are eating up the life as we know it. The slum landlords who are usually Attys. doctors etc... would not rent to the trash maybe some parts of the city could survive. Also if the city would fine these landlords for trash, boarded up houses etc... there could be enough money to invest back into the neighborhood or fund more police. Also the judicial system needs to reinvent it's self and come up with a solid plan to keep the criminals behind longer.

I would like to make a point about this topic.

Dupont's new biopolymers are not totally obtained from renewable resources. Only one of the polymer components ( 1,3 propanediol or 1,4-butanediol) will be obtained by fermentation from corn sugars. The propanediol (or butanediol) is then polymerized with either terephthalic acid (TPA) or dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), which are regular petrochemicals (and NOT obtained from renewable sources).

In Canada, at least one phone company, Bell, acccepts old cell phones and used rechargeable batteries. I don't know about the other Canadian phone companies, and I don't work for Bell, I just had a Bell cell phone. Bell's website says they donate some of these reusable cell phones to Canadian charitable programs such as women's shelters, Communities on Phone Patrol, and various registered children's charities. The rest of the reusable phones are resold to foreign countries. Any phones that can't be reused are recycled for material recovery.

As a Canadian I am encouraged that Kyoto signatories are exposing the current Canadian government's stance on Kyoto for what it is: shameful, embarrassing and a dangerous precedent. Encouragingly, all three Canadian opposition parties support meeting our Kyoto obligations, and they are supported collectively by a majority of Canadians. The three opposition parties recently forced the minority Conservative government to permit a re-write of the current Clean Air Act bill. That bill originally focussed on emissions "intensity", which is a term coined by the Bush administration to permit emissions to increase. I only hope the re-write does the job.

I started using organic cotton handkerchiefs a few months ago, and I love them! They are much softer than even the softest paper tissues. To counter the ewww factor, I carry them in a washable pouch so nothing else in my purse gets contaminated. I wash everything in cold water and hang to dry, just like all the rest of my laundry, so minimal energy is used. Just have enough handkerchiefs on hand so you can wash them frequently. My mother and boyfriend have also made the switch to handkerchiefs after seeing how well they can work. Kimberly Clark gets none of my money to support its logging of old growth forests. Perfect!

I looked into staying at the Hotel Germain in Montreal this past week, but when I asked about their environmental policies and lack of any Green Keys in the Hotel Association of Canada's green ranking of hotels, the management at Hotel Germain could only state that their environmental policies were still being developed. I will definitely check out this new option on my next trip to Montreal.

Definitely "follow" all the blogs you are interested in - it gives you a blog list and also the alerts on the dashboard. The dashboard is great, just like AOL alerts, just all listed in one place. They pop up as soon as someone posts. I love the dashboard, but life has been too busy lately to keep up. I'm now in "read and return comment courtsey mode" for the most part, at least until things slow down a bit for me - but I can still skim over all alerts for the day within a minute or two to see if something that pops up looks important, like this this entry :-)
