The cowardice, complacency and apathy of African-American star athletes has to be based in part on the sub-standard education they receive at the expense of lucrative college sports team performance. The materialism I agree also ensures that their focus is placed on $$$, partying and acquisitions and not on current affairs. These are, after all, young men. Yet, I think your point about the dissolution of the black family and its impact on the quality of black male leadership needs more explanation lest it seem misogynistic...

Re: Al Wynn Wants to Lose — Which Is OK with Me

I agree -- clearly Al is a sad and desperate man who has resorted to ThugLife in order to keep his seat since his voting record is certainly not a strong recommendation to re-elect him!

Re: Race Debate Gets Organized on YouTube

Ha! I agree that voters respect honesty. Jim Webb didn't hide his wife just because she's Asian-American. He's clearly proud of his family and who he is. Ford would have been better off being honest about his life and instilling trust in voters.

To the thought that racial politcs is fading, I beg to differ. That said, I think the game is changing rapidly. Thanks for all the great comments, y'all. Yet, I have one word for you: Katrina. And a few more words: 700 Mile Border Fence. 'Nuff said.

I'm sorry but it's clear that Rove is sniffing the changing demographics in America and sees the long term challenge for the Republicans. But the black and brown (and white for that matter) aren't buying these hollow candidates. They are going to end the struggle between cynical racist pandering and open racist oppression within the Republican party before they have any hope of votes from minorities.

Katrina showed us all exactly what the GOP really thinks and we all know now that George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People. OK, if you go and say a bunch of racist stuff, don't tell me that you're not racist. We can all see and here that you are racist. It's a non-starter.

Instead, do the Mel Gibson "I have a substance abuse problem" round. Gibson has been given a bit of a break just because he has groveled for forgiveness and has also admitted that he has a drinking problem, which implies that the alcohol was doing some of the talking that night.

Clearly, Richards' Letterman disjointed appearance leads me to believe that he too may be suffering from some sort of alcohol or drug problem. It's sad though because I used to be a fan. Now, not so much. That level of hate and failure to take full responsibility says something very frightening about him.

Re: Bill Jefferson — If You’re Black, Git Back

Thanks for the insightful comments. I agree that there's more than the color complex happening here. However, I still ask the question of whether Carter's support among whites plus her complexion are factors in her weaker support in the black community. You have to wonder what is blocking intelligent black people from voting in their best interests and entertaining the conspiracy theories of a grade A charlatan like Jefferson? Sure, Carter's whiter backers may make her suspect to some black folk. Yet someone like her should have the unanimous support of her district based on the track records of the candidates involved.

I am sorry to say it, but I think it's important to look deeper for answers in the black psyche. Look at the history of Marion Barry in DC vs Tony Williams for mayor for another example. You can vote for a self-interested jerk as a "Screw You" to The Man if you want to. But then where does that leave you?

To win, Carter needs to come out as strong as her competitor and build trust with African-American constituents in a way that doesn't alienate whites.

Re: Congressional Black Caucus Fails Black People — Again

I have to admit, I am really disappointed in Maxine Waters. According to the source of all knowledge, the Wikipedia, only 3 Black Republicans have been elected since the CBC's founding in 1971 (Charlie Rangel was one of the original founders). The 3 so far have been Senator Edward W. Brooke of Massachusetts and Representatives Gary Franks of Connecticut and J.C. Watts, Jr. of Oklahoma. Watts refused to join.

He evidently had this to say:

"...they said that I had sold out and Uncle Tom. The difference is that today, the needs of the black middle class and up have begun to diverge more sharply from the "disadvantaged." (BTW, I am so sick of this word, seriously.) The NAACP was once a force to reckon with. But is the most pressing issue they can find is "economic justice" and the glass ceiling? I think it's true that some white people dismiss resistance against racism from minorities as "playing the race card" and "being over-sensitive." Thus it is really helpful when other white people come forward and confirm racism when they see it since there are those who will only believe it if it comes from someone who looks like them. At least that's my observation.

I think there are some people out there who are really uncomfortable with/threatened by candidates speaking to African-Americans directly and seriously. They believe our concerns are different, when in fact, we are concerned about Iraq, national and community safety, healthcare, social security and education just like everyone else. We are impacted in some cases differently from other groups and therefore may approach these issues from a different perspective.

Re: Proposed Immigration Bill & The Black Community

Welcome rikyrah!!! Black groups were reluctant to oppose his nomination to the Supreme Court since he was a brother. Now that we all know he ain't no brother, it's too late. With Gonzales, Latino groups have an opportunity that African-American groups do not right now in the case of Clarence Thomas -- which is help remove an official who may look the same but whose policies are opposed to the interests of those whose faces he resembles. Dr. Spence - thanks for the download on the race of the girl. Yes, it shouldn't matter what race Wilson's partner was. But this is America. That kind of thing does still matter sometimes in how a case is handled. Blacks who commit crimes against whites statistically tend to receive harsher sentences than those who commit crimes against other blacks...

Agreed on the underlying morality of the case. Should these teenagers had significantly more supervision? Absolutely. Are kids sexually active too young and in inappropriate ways today? Sure. The question is providing enough information and guidance so that kids make the right choices.

Re: Hillbilly Nation — CNN/YouTube Republican Debate

To answer each of your points briefly:

1. And yes, blacks have been the battered wife of the Democratic party for a few decades now. Candidates come out to churches and barbershops sure, but only around election time. You may not like the way it sounds. But would you really vote for John McCain or Mike Huckabee over Hillary Clinton? I'm not sure I would. I would probably choose her or stay home. And voting is important to me. Maybe if a strong independent ran, I might consider him/her. But I think a lot of African-Americans would make the same calculations as I did. And yes, it's dismaying that in November, if Obama or Edwards don't receive the nomination, we may face being placed in a position between having to vote for a race-baiter and a racist. Or not voting at all.

Re: Hillary Clinton on Meet the Press — Aftermath and Impressions

Also, re: Bob Johnson -- don't get me wrong.
