Well, HIPPA is useful after all. Probably it's a whole lot harder to convict someone of identity theft, in which you're innocent until proven guilty, that to allege HIPPA infractions, in which you're guilty until proven innocent.

I have no doubt this creep did what he plead guilty to, and he deserves a flaying, not just jail time. But, was HiPPA the issue here, or just a convenient way to punish him?

I guess this is just the sentencing of the previous entry of the same conviction, but I'm still unhappy that HIPAA, a set of overbearing, intrusive laws that aren't needed except by people who have no reason to live but to make more laws, were used in lieu of the laws already on the books regarding identity theft.

Mark my words, this is the beginning of the slippery slope for medicine. If you work in or around hospitals, there's a special set of laws that were meant for one purpose but that will serve many. And you will not have any defense.

I feel bad for their residents. Yes, everyone will be impacted, but I identify most with the residents in this sort of situation.

I wonder who in LA County will be losing their jobs over this? Is there no outside supervision? I cannot believe JACHO would just pull the rug out, there had to have been warnings in the past that went unheeded.

Aah, but you miss the point.

Shame is an outdated idea. To paraphrase that great writer, PJ O'Rourke, "To lean that a celebrity is a drug addict, pervert and adulterer is to have read their autobiography" is it any wonder that shame is dead as a motivating force?

Money is now the prime motivator, and more's the pity.

There's a small-claims court judge who should be rightfully villified for this crap. As it was small-claims court, there were probably no lawyers around to collect the crumbs (pun intended).

Sounds like the walked away from the table when it looked like their lawsuit exposure diminished.

Electronic medical records wouldn't be recognizable when the water is washed out of the server, while the paper records could probably be salvaged.
