in How I made over $2 million with this blog (Scripting News) on Scripting News
I agree with most of your post, Dave. There are two types of blog publishers: Social and Search. Some cross over from one type to the other and back again, but each have a specific, targeted audience. Mr. Lyons was trying to be a search blogger while having a social blog. The two don't mix very well. AdSense works for search conversions very well and very poorly anything else. Had Mr. Lyons done his research early enough in the game, he would have saved himself a lot of headaches and used his blog for social marketing.

His article just makes him look like the typical marketing newbie and that's really sad.

in FoxTab Brings Aero Experience To Tab Switching In Firefox on Techie Buzz
As much as I like the virtual windows thing (first seen in Linux), I think it's just so much eye candy. I much prefer using the standard alt-tab combination to quickly flip through tabs. I don't keep enough tabs open (with only 512KB on this PC) to even need tab switching in Firefox.

in WordPress.com Subdomain Spam With Tags? on Andy Beard - Internet Business Systems Discussion
I've spent more than 40 man-hours tagging over 1100 posts on my blog. I didn't do it for SEO. I did for it relevancy. Each tag represents a sub-topic on a post. If a person clicks one of the tags, they'll find related posts. I believe if it's used for anything else, it's a waste of time.

Andy Beard RT it is relevant for users, but what is relevant for users is also relevant for search engines ;)

I notice weird search results all the time, just by using tagging. Pages appearing for related searches which only include a tag with the search term.
It used to be that the tag page was most likely to appear, but now Google sometimes do something else, somehow merge everything into the permalink page, but still apply the relevance from the tag page.

It is also great for double listings, when the tag page becomes highly relevant, such as a search for dofollow currently.

in Blogger Unleashed: Honest, Straightforward Advocate on Pajama Professional
Hi, Victor is one of my many online friends. I also cut my teeth on the C64 (and then C128 later) before hopping onto the Internet before it was called the Internet. Unfortunately, I was in military at the time, so I didn't have the luxury of time to spend doing the things he did.

Anyway, I stopped by to check out your "do follow" status and to add your blog to my list. Thanks.

I think their efforts to combat gaming has had a negative impact on everyone. And here I thought only my site had taken a dive.

in Signatures. Having the last word on your comments. on ImJustCreative
Graham, the signature thing doesn't bother me, although I rarely do it. Something you may want to consider when leaving multiple comments on the same thread, is that the "calling card" doesn't need to be dropped each time, especially if the comments are within close proximity to each other.

Because then, it just looks like signature spam. Once per thread is ideal as far as I'm concerned.

in How often do you hear the same ‘blogging’ message? on ImJustCreative
Stopped by to scratchback as well as see what you have. Nice article. Accusations get hurled mainly by those without experience. Hot topics get written by so many people in a short span of time, there's bound to be overlaps, references, etc.

Imitation is flattery whereas pure plagiarism is not. People need to learn to distinguish between the two.

in Roy Scheider 1932-2008 on Pop Critics
I didn't say I *liked* Airwolf (Jan Michael Vincent sucked to no end) and I can't believe it lasted as long as it did. But the theme was catchy and I have it on my PC somewhere (but with the wrong filename so I'll probably never find it again).

And what about "Blue Thunder" dangit!?! He was awesome.

in Roy Scheider 1932-2008 on Pop Critics
Wow, I didn't know he was that old. How could you forget about "Blue Thunder" which also starred Malcom McDowell? You know, "Follow my leader." The TV show Airwolf wouldn't have been made if it hadn't been for that movie.

in Josh Brolin - The New Terminator? on Pop Critics
I see Josh Brolin as John Connor and Christian Bale as The Terminator, but it could easily be the other way around. The film isn't scheduled for completion until 2009, so a lot of things could change.

in Most overrated science fiction show? on Pop Critics
Okay, I admit it, I can't even think of voting on a poll like this. BSG and Heroes are the only two of them that I've seen. Compared to what I have available to me (here in the Philippines), nothing I get a chance to see is overrated.

Okay, I just saw the teaser. It was disturbing. Maybe I'll be better off NOT seeing the movie.

I didn't see "Lady in the Water". I'll have to umm acquire it so that I can see if it's as bad as everyone says.

I really wanted to see the teaser. Anything would be better than some of the junk I've seen recently.

in Technorati Is Ridiculous on Pop Critics
Yes, Technorati has some problems. One of them is that their database will only let you add 200 favorites -- I had over 500 before they put the limitation into effect.

I gained 50 links one day (and they were valid) and watched them disappear in two days, without reason. I don't know what Technorati's problems are, and I really don't care -- I only look once a day if that much. At once time, though, I actually used it to see what my favorite blogs were up to -- but that doesn't seem to be up-to-date most of the time either nowadays.

I take it this will be the first constitution class Enterprise (the one in Enterprise series wasn't).

I'm hoping for a good movie. Somehow, though, I kind of doubt it.

in Battlestar Galactica prequel in the works? on Pop Critics
I don't know about this. It had better be really good or it'll be the end of the BSG franchise.

Temple of Doom did well because no one knew (no one I knew knew or something like that) it was a prequel until after it came out.

The SW prequels were crap in my book.

in Google PageRank Directory Clanger on Andy Beard - Internet Business Systems Discussion
The Google Directory, along with dmoz.org, lost relevancy a long time ago. Now, if the volunteer editors at dmoz.org were even moderately reliable at adding and removing entries, that wouldn't be the case.

It just confuses the heck out of me as to why Google uses the Open Directory Project in the first place. Anyway, a graph next to each entry, without displaying the actual number, is almost worthless. Is it a 4 or a 5, a 5 or a 6? Guessing by the appearance isn't nearly accurate enough.
Andy Beard PR4 you can read, it is trying to tell the cut off between 5 and 6 that is impossible unless you have some historical reference. Knowing my position is normally at the bottom of any catchment due to the age of my inclusion, and that I have moved up the list 15 slots is all I can go on.

I have never received any real traffic from DMOZ, which is also why I would look on buying a link from Yahoo Directory as purely for SEO purposes.

The listings are out of date, and for instance Patrick at Lonely Marketer is still listed as being at his old Wordpress.com URL

Just the required ones for the advertiser, Andy. I didn't even look at the other links, if any.

Katy To to add in, I also requested reconsideration from Google with my PPP script still installed. I only placed the no follow tag on sponsored links. Additionally, I removed a lot of the "spam looking" posts that I made for PayU2Blog.

Two weeks after my request, my PageRank was restored to my previous 3.
