in Dave’s Uighur Piece on The Washington Independent
Correction: Upon closer reading, David did mention that the Uighurs will likely face torture if released to China, albeit fairly late in the story. I apologize for missing that. The story has been updated to make this point higher up in the article.

Thanks for pointing out this key point that was missing from the story. The Uighurs cannot be returned to China because they will likely be persecuted or tortured. The article has been updated to include this.

in ASU: Obama Underserving of Honorary Degree on The Washington Independent
Not playing the race card, but given Arizona's spotty record on racial sensitivity in recent history, from a PR perspective, it seems like a no-brainer that ASU would take the opportunity to repudiate the past by conferring an honorary degree on someone who, by any reasonable measure, has achieved quite a lot in his lifetime -- including becoming the first African-American president.

Gary Interesting someone complaining about "The Race Card" has a monkey as their icon photo?

Hmmm....let's see. Editor of Harvard Law Review, Law professor at a top university, best-selling author, senator and now president. Yeah, that's a paltry list of achievements, none of them at all intellectual.

in Study: Virginity Pledges Don’t Work on The Washington Independent
Your logic is flawed, but I think you've put your finger on the point. The students often take the pledge as part of a sex-ed program, often abstinence-only, but it is not taken in good faith. If that is the case, what is the value of the pledge as part of a sex-ed policy?

If the reality is that the vast majority of teenagers are going to have premarital sex, whether they've participated in an abstinence-only program or not, then it makes sense to employ a reality-based policy that teaches kids how to be safe if and when they choose to become sexually active.

Denying them education about condoms and birth control only increases the likelihood that they will contract a disease or seek an abortion for an unwanted pregnancy.

I'm right there with you. I've long been a supporter of forcing old-school filibusters, for entertainment, civic and strategic purposes, but only recently have had a forum to voice that support. Let's hope Reid and the Democrats take the GOP to task in the 111th Congress.

in Report: FBI Investigating Allegations Concerning Minn. Senator on The Washington Independent
Whoops. You are correct. I did neglect to put Blagojevich's party affiliation near his name. This was an oversight, and was not intentional. The post has been updated to include this.

I would point out that TWI has covered the Blagojevich story extensively both yesterday and today.

However, I disagree with your implication that just because there is a Democratic scandal in the news, an FBI investigation of another politician, Republican or Democrat, is not newsworthy.

We will continue to cover such investigations, regardless of the affected political party.

in Obama: No Contact With Blagojevich on The Washington Independent
I didn't mean to imply that Emanuel blew the whistle on everything Blagojevich is accused of. The news report I link says Emanuel may have contacted the Feds re: the Senate seat.

Here's a quote:

CONATY: We did receive a tip this morning that perhaps all of this came together so quickly because the Governor may have reached out to Rahm Emanuel, the president-elect’s chief of staff, in attempting to leverage filling the Senate seat. And it may have been Rahm Emanuel who tipped the scale and made this move as quickly as it did.

in SCOTUS Won’t Hear Obama Citizenship Case on The Washington Independent
I did not intend "conspiracy freaks" as an insult, but rather a statement of fact.

The conspiracy: Without a shred of evidence supporting their position, and despite a mountain of evidence refuting it (the certification of live birth, Hawaiian officials vouching for the existence of Obama's birth certificate among state records, a birth notice in a Honolulu newspaper), some people irrationally cling to the ridiculous and, indeed, refuted notion that Obama is ineligible for the presidency and something improper and/or sinister is going on here.

Webster's Dictionary defines "freak" as "a person who is obsessed with something" -- such as, say, the pursuit of a frivolous lawsuit all the way to the Supreme Court.

I think "conspiracy freak" is a perfectly reasonable term for such people.

But, as I said, better luck next time.

Fred Mr. DeLong, next time you borrow that dictionary, you ought to look up "conspiracy." No one has alleged a conspiracy -- only one liar and a lot of people looking the other way. Everybody has maintained plausible deniability. (Even Mr. O, cuz he can always say he doesn't remember being born and he hasn't actually read his birth cert.)
Fred No point talking to you, really, DeLong, but this may be helpful to someone:
1. An online jpg is not evidence. If you accept such a thing as evidence, you're just playing pattycake and making sandcastles. If you believe every picture you see online, try this: http://www.russpage.net/obamapalin-dancing-with...
2. Whoever read you that Hawaii announcement misrepresented it. It said only that a birth certificate was "on file." Said NOTHING about what was in it. Didn't even say that the officials had actually looked at the certificate (they may have looked at an index, we can't tell from the announcement.)
3. I dunno about the birth notice. Newspapers don't accept phone calls? Anyway, try bringing a newspaper announcement with you to the DMV and see how far it gets you.
Pretty small mountain, huh?

in Obama and Gore to Meet Tuesday on The Washington Independent
Well, Gore and his spokespeople have said repeatedly and flatly that he is not interested in serving in the new administration. Marc Ambinder says no way. Is it totally unthinkable that Obama makes an offer that Gore just can't refuse? Probably not. But all indications seem to be that it is EXTREMELY unlikely that Gore will accept anything other than an advisory role.

Supposedly these positions will be filled by Christmas, and maybe as early as this week, so I guess we'll know soon enough.

Colin Waters The sooner the better in my opinion. It is amazing how he has handled this entire transition so far. As a male I look up the way he handles every aspect of his life and is still above all else someone who is focused on his family and what needs to be done.

in Progressives Could Lose a Small Battle to Win the Big War on The Washington Independent
I think you are right. The ship of state is not designed to turn on a dime, and I think it is clear that Obama (wisely) intends to pursue a generally incrementalist strategy in a steady leftward direction by appealing to the center. Ultimately, the reality of the situation is that Democrats do need the cooperation of at least some Republicans.

in Progressives Could Lose a Small Battle to Win the Big War on The Washington Independent
I appreciate your concerns, but I still think more or less writing off the Obama administration as simply Clinton redux is a mistake. My point is to wait and see. It's too early for such judgments, and I suspect Obama is quite serious that he will be the driving force behind policy. Having people who are experienced at working the levers of government is merely a strategy for implementing his agenda.

I would recommend Hendrik Hertzberg's essay in The New Yorker a couple weeks ago.

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/hendrikhe...

Hertzbeg writes:

The theory seems to be that a “Clinton person” would be inclined, at best, to reproduce the policies and actions of the Clinton Administration, including the accompanying mistakes, or, at worst, to serve the interests of “the Clintons” should they prove divergent from those of the Obama Administration and the nation.

I sincerely doubt any of the people Obama has chosen would do this, or Obama would tolerate anyone under him attempting it. The full essay is worth a read for an explanation of the benefits of employing seasoned hands.

As for Atrios, I don't think he was implying those on the left are "dirty hippies," but was using the popular hyperbolic criticism of "the left" for comedic and illustrative effect.

in Drug Policy ‘Buck’ Stops With Obama, Too on The Washington Independent
Aside from your last sentence, which I can't comment on because I don't know enough about Ramstad to judge, I agree whole-heartedly with everything you said. One are the Obama administration could make dramatic changes is drug policy reform. However, with so much federal money being spent and the constituencies that develop whenever the federal government throws money around foolishly, reform may be very difficult, especially without appearing "soft on crime." Still, I'm hopeful Obama will have the courage to expend political capital on formulating a sensible drug policy.

Actually, I live in Arizona and I didn't forget about Interior. It is my understanding that our own Rep. Raul Grijalva is at the top of the list for that position, which is why I left it out, like I left out Commerce.

in Polls: McCain Slipping in Swing States and Arizona on The Washington Independent
Yes, this house has been on the market for a couple of months. To be fair to the McCains, they are not the ones selling the house. They sold it in late-2006 for around $3 million. It has since been greatly expanded and completely overhauled, and the opulent decor in this report was added by the new owner. Here's an earlier report about the listing.
