in The Death of the Library? A Lunchtime Twitter Conversation on Dan Hocking
I'm a bit tired, so accept my apologies for simply dropping links to my blog here, but I've thought long and hard about the changing role of the library.

First: If anyone is ready to embrace the online world and use social tools to help others access information, it’s librarians.

Next: The library needs to go from a place where you access collections to a place where you access connections.

I'll stop there, but thanks for starting this conversation. It's an important one.

in The “Art” of Networking (or rather, 1 Simple Tip for Networking…) on Dan Hocking
Being genuine and honest is key to building any kind of relationship: business, intimate, or otherwise. And a big part of being genuine is being truly interested in the other person or (some part of) their work. By finding that honest point of interest, you automatically find an avenue for genuine and real conversation and connection.

Nice piece, by the way. I'll be coming back more often. =)

in Who is the smartest of them all? on eaves.ca
I'd love to see this kind of thing done for ministerial offices! Maybe everyone should do a Wonderlic test upon entering the public service? =)

For what it's worth, this comes as a sweet validation for the many years I played football and people derided me for playing a "brainless" sport. I played right guard (score of 23) -- but it's worth noting that I originally started playing right tackle (26) but was moved because I was too small.

Also, now I can make fun of my running back, who always got all the glory.

You have a knack for writing about topics just as I'm discussing them with colleagues here at work. Of course, you say it much better than I ever do. I'll be sharing this with all of them. Thanks David!

Excellent timing in posting this David. I've been having several conversations recently on why so many of my friends not only prefer private sector work, but actively ignore public sector opportunities when coming out of school. There really are very few tangible incentives to consider a career in the public service, and that should be changed.

Respect.

I've been saying this for years, but it has much more clout when someone like you says it. =)

Thanks for posting this Gary. It made my Friday morning. And thank you for letting me be part of your community.

I had a similar experience on Lufthansa a few months ago. Knowing that the plane was going to be departing about 1 hour late because of technical issues, they called my mobile (and emailed) to tell me I didn't have to rush to the airport to check in. Brilliant.

in Alltop- Encouraging the Mainstream on Chris Brogan
I'm a huge fan of Alltop, because it's a bit like curated RSS feeds for people that don't understand RSS. I've already turned quite a few people on to Alltop, and am hoping it acts like a gateway drug to more interaction on the web: http://is.gd/1VO

Sweet! Looking good to me. I went with the plain white two-column setup on Eloquation a few weeks ago, and I think it's improved the emphasis on content on my site. And since this site has fantastic content, I think this is a great move for you as well!

Chris, thanks for doing this.

I've been trying to explain to people how Twitter is my new opinion aggregator (I get tons of answers to my questions, even with a tenth of the followers you have) but it means so much more to them when they hear it from someone like you. =)

in Post a question on Canada’s role in the world for Axworthy, Granatstein and myself to discuss on eaves.ca
Not a question, but a thought that popped into my head a few years ago:

"Perhaps the first problem that the Canadian foreign service needs to address is the notion of the foreign service as 'old white man’s club' and try to foster interest in foreign policy in the growing multicultural public."

Thanks for the link to the video again. I had seen it immediately after the victory, and was struck by how amazing it was, but it's even better now that I've had the time to reflect upon it. Keeping my fingers crossed for Super Tuesday tomorrow!

in Unfair Use Can Sometimes Be Fair on How To Split An Atom
Here's another angle that has nothing to do with the legal business: the Richter-Scales didn't ask nicely. Had they asked, or even had they responded to Lane in a nice and respectful manner instead of getting a lawyer involved, all of this could have been avoided.

Derek's got a great post on this, where he says something super important: "It’s time that we develop some ethical practices for the creation of collaborative media. Simply asking for permission to use someone else’s work is a good place to start."

sbspalding That is an -excellent- point. If they had asked, this could have been resolved before the problem began.
