Thanks for this - another recommendation to add to my To Read List for summer. List is getting frighteningly long now...

It's a huge can of worms - just because a librarian got their quals post-Google doesn't mean they will have the right skills, as you say.
Still pondering. Great topic! (Yes, I said so already ;) )

Kathryn and I were talking about the porn thing today - even with "regular" porn, do you ever see it if you aren't actively looking for it? To me, this stinks of ignorant people trying to control something they don't understand. " ClareSnow made a very good point on my blog today: "the offline majority should not be telling the online minority what to do. but its the offline majority who are scared of the internet and don’t know how to deal with its problematic aspects."

So is the good senator definitely going to be there? (just thinking about today's chatter on Twitter)
Am I being overly optimistic in thinking that all our expressions of opposition and dismay will have any sway, and that by the time of Online we will be congratulating the senator on his good sense?
You going to Online, Andrew?

Well, I'm assuming that, unless we get announcement saying that he ain't showing up any more, he'll be there (despite the irony of him opening a conference called "Information Online".)
I think that sometimes it's overly optimistic to think that our voices alone will have a lasting impact. However, the more people that stir up discussion, the more an issue gets noticed. If enough people speak up and point out the bleeding obvious, then he'll have to concede the flaws in his plan. And ven if we're not successful, as long as there's ongoing discourse, there's still hope for the future.
Yes, I am planning to attend Online. I just need to secure the means first.

I agree 100% that an organisation that values its staff enough to send them to events like NLS is the sort of organisation I would want to work in. (MPOW is sending two new grads, btw ;) ) Of course the budget thing is a big factor - many libraries just don't have the funds to send people to anything...
I went to the very first NLS many moons ago and really really got a lot out of it - hope this one goes well and I look forward to hearing all about it!

in Sick whale euthanised…by blowing it up on The Inquisitr
Duncan I seem to recall somewhere that they couldn't euthanise the whale the usual way because of its size. I'm glad they put it out of its suffering, anyway

It's a humpback, same as the whale in Sydney a few months back. I don't doubt that putting it out of its suffering was the right thing, but the methodology is interesting at best :-)

I have never been 100% raw so can't comment on that, however when I first started Eat to Live I felt so blah it was very hard to keep going. I had raw fruit for breakfast, raw veg for lunch (with a small amount of cooked beans/chickpeas) and then rice with vegies quickly stirfried in water. I wasn't sure I could continue, I found it so hard. Over time my body adjusted, and after the first two weeks or so where I felt absolutely rotten, I found myself feeling great. I guess I'm trying to say that it does get better, even if it doesn't feel like it when your whole body just doesn't feel right.
And yes making sure I had the right food for lunch was a major challenge - I have had to set aside a good half hour in the mornings to prepare lunch (washing, cleaning and chopping veggies) - and we now have a good weekend routine where we go to the market and stock up on lots of greens. Some 6 months on I am still happily eating fruit for breakfast and raw salads for lunch with light cooked meals for dinner...
One thing which I have learnt over the six months is to not beat myself up too much if I "fall off the wagon". It's always possible to get back on track. As you say, even if it does feel like you're starting at square one, you are better off than you were!

Kate, thank you so much for sharing your story. I am full of admiration for you and am glad and honoured to be sharing your journey via this blog. You have already lost so much weight since October (I think that's when I last saw you)! I'm looking forward to catching up with you again soon.
I can really relate to your need to do the raw thing, so as not to slip back into old habits. Since the end of August last year I have lost around 13 kg (was 74kg, now around 60-61kg) and I have done that by going vegetarian (with two meals of my day actually raw and vegan). If I was still eating meat I think it would be too easy for me to get lazy and slip back into my old habits. I'm quite chuffed to know that you, Simone and I are all working on our health (for me the main impetus was wanting to feel better, and wanting to avoid diseases like type 2 diabetes which a few people in my family have). Kathryn if there's anything I can do to support you let me know :)
I'm glad we have a dog - we have been trying to walk him everyday, and I am enjoying our 40 minute daily walk. Am trying to work myself into more strenuous exercise...
I think the main thing is to not beat yourself up when you slip up. It's hard work changing habits that have formed over many years (dietary and emotional), and it's more important to recognise your commitment to yourself, and to just keep working on it. Oh, and yes remember that many people are cheering you on :)

in The invisible audience shows up — on Facebook on Scobleizer
Been reading your blog for ages but always read very quickly, and then go away to digest the info. So no, never bothered to comment. As to why I commented on Facebook instead, well, I don't know. Steve (above) makes a good point, though.

in Lost a Function… on What I Learned Today...
You've probably already fixed this, but in case you haven't, I don't think it's an add-on - go to Tools > Options > Main and you'll see the option for 'When Firefox starts:' - select the 'Show my windows and tabs from last time' option (as opposed to 'Show my home page' or 'Show a blank page').

Having just barely qualified for ALIAA, I could go and work in a completely different industry for the next 10 years and come back claiming the same rights in the profession as someone who has qualified with the latest skills and training - is that fair?
On the other hand, is it fair for ALIA to force people to undergo "PD" for accreditation, particularly if they are located outside major cities...?
