in Bluetooth on iPod Touch 2G on Island in the Net
I don't have a Nokia Smartphone so I don't know the answer to your question. If you haven't already, update your (2nd generation) iPod Touch firmware to OS 3.0 and try it out. Thanks for dropping by.

in How to create a wireless mesh network with Apple AirPorts on Island in the Net
Let me know how well this works for you. I am considering upgrading my Time Capsule to get the "guest" network feature. Being a security minded person I use WPA2 to secure my wireless. But my son's Nintendo DS does not work with WPA.

Using different SSID means you've created separate wireless networks. That would not work for me since I would not be able to use devices connected to one network from the other. My printer is connected to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme so that everyone in the house can print. My Mac Mini serves as a music jukebox. I use the Apple Remote app on my iPod Touch to control AirTunes (the AirPort Express is connected to the home stereo) running on the Mac mini. I also use Simplify Media so that I can stream my playlist to my iPod Touch when I am working in the yard. None of that would be possible if I used different SSIDs.

All my WDS devices use the same SSID. So no matter what I am connected to my network. The WDS clients (AirPort Express and AirPort Extreme) are basically rebroadcasting the signal from the base station.

Interestingly Apple with just 1/3 of the staff and barley 7% of the market does very well financially even when compared to Microsoft

Author, Seth Godin, wrote a short post on hig blog titled "Luxury vs Premium". He was not talking about Apple or Microsoft specifically but he made some very valid points.

"Luxury goods are needlessly expensive. By needlessly, I mean that the price is not related to performance. The price is related to scarcity, brand and storytelling. Luxury goods are organized waste. ……. Premium goods, on the other hand, are expensive variants of commodity goods. Pay more, get more."

I'm glad it worked. Unfortunately my employer uses a proxy server and the MobileMe for Windows Control Panel applet does not support proxies.

I have a mixed environment of Windows, Macs, Linux and BSD-UNIX so I understand the need for interconnection. It's easy when using standard protocols and services but ... Microsoft never plays nice.

You can connect from Mac OS X to Windows using Microsoft free Remote Desktop Connection for Mac. You can remote to a Mac from Windows using Virtual Network Computing (VNC). While Macs (and UNIX and Linux) support the standard VNC service out of the box, Windows does not. For Windows you will need to install a VNC client.

Andre, I bought my first Mac in 2005 and fell in love. It was the first computer system I have ever used that did not require a lot of technical knowledge (like Linux and UNIX) and did not crash repeatedly (like Windows). As an IT professional I highly recommend the Mac for regular home use. I plan on buying and iMac for the kids this spring and kicking all the PCs to the curb. I am sick and tired of dealing with security patches, and anti-virus updates, and rebooting. In my experience, the Mac just works.

Andre John Khurt,
I'm thinking of making the change to an iMac or macbook this year on of our computers. So during the transition, our home network will be in a mixed state of both apples and windows. Do you know if there is a way to remote desktop from windows into an apple? Let me know what the experience was like in terms of performance and ease in setting up. Thanks!

I don't have Tiny XP so I can't help with that. A lot of others have got this working in various ways. I have you tried using the me.com domain instead of mac.com?

I have Type 1 diabetes so my soda drinking is limited to "diet" which usually means artificial sweetner. However I found a brand of diet sodas made by Steaz that are low enough in sugar that I can drink them. I like the Black Cherry.

NexusE. Thanks for dropping by. You are correct. iDisk is available on Windows. I forgot about that; which is odd since I wrote an article on how to do it. LOL.

MobileMe and iDisk however do not work at all behind a corporate firewall with proxy servers. This is what Apple has to say:

Check for proxy servers

If you use a proxy server to connect to the Internet, you may need to talk with your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) to find out if the proxy server supports WebDAV connections. WebDAV is the protocol used to allow your computer to interact with the iDisk. Sometimes a proxy server may be running outdated software that does not allow WebDAV connections. If your proxy does not support WebDAV connections, the network administrator or ISP may be able to give you information to enter in your network preferences that would enable you to bypass the proxy server when connecting to the Me.com domain.

The whole point of web proxy servers is to allow the company to control how it's network resources are being used and to mitigate legal liability (from porn etc). So why would the network security admin tell a user how to bypass the proxy?

I am the web gateway (proxy) security policy manger for my employer and I know that our (brand new) appliances support WebDAV. The problem is that MobileMe is coded to use port 80 instead of whatever the Internet Explorer settings are.

Adnan Pamukcu Well, I amd not a mobile me user, but most of the people that I am working with trying to syn ical, address book and everything between their iphone and computer. They all have complains about it is not working properly.

This is the reason I am using dropbox and on the top of it, when I hearth about Fruux I got so excited. I did not get a chance to try it yet.

I think Apple needs to offer more value for the $99 I pay for MobileMe. I have so many other free and low cost alternatives that I will not be renewing my MobileMe membership. The only thing I will miss is Address cloud based synchronization between my iPod Touch and Macs. But then again fruux.com comes very close to closing that gap.
