in What’s Your Google / Microsoft / Yahoo Usage Breakdown? on Bob Caswell
I basically use Google for everything. I do have an email account with Yahoo, but that is only for spam. Occasionally I'll switch over to Microsoft's map service, but generally speaking I like Google Maps better (street view really amazes me!)

I used to use Yahoo a long time ago for searching, but once Google came along, I knew Yahoo was no longer superior. Since then, I've never gone back.

in Search 1.0: Search Engines Still Lack Simple Features on Bob Caswell
This would be an amazing feature especially for students or researchers. I know there have been plenty of times where I have been working on research type projects and consistently found information that was related to my topic, but incredibly out dated. It would have been great to have been able to sort by date and find the most recent information. This is especially true when you're researching computer information. I find articles dating back to 2003 or 2004, and in a lot of cases that information is no longer valid.

I agree completely with you Paul. A bunch of my friends have switched over to Mac in the past couple years, and they consistently use this excuse and usually I just kind of smirk to myself. The only reason Mac's are more secure is because until recently hackers and other malicious online types didn't care enough to go after them. It's like you said, now that they're gaining more popularity, they will not be as secure as they once were. It's been known for a while that Mac's do not contain the levels of security measures that PC's do and I think in time Mac users are going to find this out. I think Mac's security policy is kind of one of security through obscurity. Keep any security flaws secret...your users dont know about them, the attackers (who dont care...yet) dont know about them....all is well. That's probably going to need to change in the near future.

in eBay: No Matter How Hard You Try, You’re Still No Amazon on Bob Caswell
Yeah, I don't know, there's just something about Amazon that feels safer. That's why I didn't mind buying and selling my books on it.

in eBay: No Matter How Hard You Try, You’re Still No Amazon on Bob Caswell
I started using Amazon to buy and sell textbooks just a few weeks ago. I must say that it works quite well. I found some amazing deals and I was also able to sell some of the books I had for a pretty nice chunk of change. Trying to do the same thing on eBay would have been disasterous (I know, I looked into it). Amazon's way of doing things is just so much more organized and smoother than eBay's.

in Amazon MP3 Expanding Internationally, More DRM-Free in 2008 on Bob Caswell
Qtrax is a good idea in principle, mainly because of the the vast number of songs they said they would offer. The issue is that according to most news sites I've been reading this afternoon, Qtrax has yet to sign any contracts with any of the major music labels. Apparently, most of them are even going so far as to deny ever even being in negotiations with Qtrax...with the exception of Universal. This is slightly dissapointing.

If someone could somehow figure out a way to offer free, legal, DRM-Free music (either MP3's or WMA's) that were atleast 192kbps or better, that would be amazing. It could even be ad supported for all I care. Sadly, this is probably just a dream. ;-)

in Amazon MP3 Expanding Internationally, More DRM-Free in 2008 on Bob Caswell
See, Amazon's got the right idea going DRM-Free. Just today there was news out of a new service that was supposed to open tonight (though some reports are saying it's a scam) that would enable users to download all the free music they wanted, LEGALLy off of a type of P2P platform. The catch was that it's ad supported AND the music comes with DRM. The recording industry and it's contractors really just need to give up on the whole DRM kick if they want users to feel more inclined to pay for music downloads. It's good to see that some of them have and that Amazon is taking advantage of it and providing DRM free music to it's users.

in How Much Is All Your Email Worth? Answer: $50 on Bob Caswell
Without even looking at the dollar amount being given to each user here....I just can't believe that an internet company as large as that wouldn't have some sort of backup for their email system. That just seems absurd to me, though maybe i'm just not familiar with the way ISP's handle things.

With that said, if thier contract truly does include a clause about the guarantee and liability of email falling on the end user, than I would say that really any compensation users receive is better than nothing. Sure it sucks that it's only $50, but as you guys are saying, most free email sites wouldn't even afford you that. These are the chances you take when signing up for something free. Still though, they should have a backup system...and maybe after this they'll implement one.
