Since religion isn't based on evidence but rather blind faith, any help it provides is kind of accidental and could very well turn around whenever a new dogma meme spreads.

The bible and other religious books have enough pages that if you dig to find a justification for what you want to do, you can probably find it, whether is it dominion over Earth or its protection.

We need to act based on evidence and the best information available, not on some imaginary friends' supposed wishes.

As a former smoker, I can say that the only thing that would have made me quit sooner would have been raising the price. I knew all about the health problems and didn't care enough to quit. I finally did stop because I simply got tired of the habit...always having to find a place to smoke, smelling worse in the winter, disapproving stares from co-workers.

Raising the tax will encourage more younger people not to start.

I was just thinking/wondering about this site the other day. The parking lot is vast and I've never seen it more than 1/4 full. Seems like an enormous waste of space.

Is the size of the parking lot mandated by any law/zoning code? Is there any reason Schnucks could sell parts of that lot for development?

That area has so much foot and vehicle traffic, and it seems that many businesses are profitting from that heavy traffic. If that area is known to be a heavy traffic area and thus good for consumer sales in general, it seems like a waste to have so much empty space sitting there unused.

I've wondered about this topic. As an Asian-American woman myself, I would love to attend this panel discussion if I lived anywhere near you... but why would Asian American Female Sexuality be different from the sexuality of any other woman? Need we separate ourselves in such a way? I know that some men have different perceptions about how Asian women are, but that does not affect how WE feel about sexuality.

Presumably the differences in sexuality are more from individual to individual than they are from race to race.

When people are in college, they often are so sure that there is one right way to live life. When people have graduated and are out in the real world, they realize that there is no one right way, no ONE definition to any term (such as feminism), no one rule by which they should live.

If True Love Revolution is espousing that no one should have sex before marriage, that is sheer bloody arrogance. There is NO WAY that college students can know enough about the real world to make a pronouncement or even a recommendation like that for all people. So a person who is 40 years old and has never been married... is that person never supposed to have had sex?

Having had the whole experience of love and marriage and kids, I would come down even harder on TLR than you have, Lena. Their position statement on feminism is a subtle throwback to the dark ages. It says nothing about the possibility of stay-at-home dads; only glorifies stay-at-home moms (and doesn't mention the fact that they are unpaid for the most difficult job in the world). And what is this nonsense about a "special bond" between mothers and children, witnessed in animals and other humans? I will be VERY honest here: we mothers love our kids, yes, but that is no different from how fathers love their kids; there is nothing special about the MOTHER-child link. Among animals, mothers take care of their kids because they have to, because the father has usually wandered away. There is no "proof" for what TLR espouses. And the fact that this is all being prattered by kids who have no clue of marriage and parenthood makes it all the more reprehensible.

For their sakes, I can't wait till these TLR students graduate and live in the real world for a while.

While the Tesla looks a lot like a Lotus, so much has been changed that I think the credit should go to both teams. Elon Musk has said in various interviews that up to 90% of the parts were new. The whole body is carbon fiber, the whole drivetrain has been changed, etc..

Ironically, I can see the truth in both Heathcliff and Lena's statements. This is from the viewpoint of one who has already been married almost a decade.

Statistics show that marriage benefits husbands more than wives in terms of increased lifespan and general health (compared with unmarried men and women). Indeed, while married men live longer than single men, single women live longer than married women.

Yet, it really IS true that ever since I graduated from college (and even during my senior year of college), it was always the women around me who were more eager to get married than the men - in spite of the statistics described above. The men have never appeared to be in much of a hurry, even if they knew that their health and lifespan would increase upon entering marriage.

Why is this? I think it's because of an overall societal pressure for women to have children, and to make them feel as though they're somehow inadequate if they don't have kids. My own belief is that if women weren't so worried about their biological clocks, then they could afford to be as casual as men about marriage - and that would be a HUGE relief to women everywhere.

I also believe that there is not much benefit to parents from having kids. There IS a benefit to society, because we need the next generation to pay our Social Security and Medicare. But to individual parents, it is just a lot of hard work and suffering, and we cannot even guarantee our children's affection at the end of all of it (again, this is coming from someone who has 2 kids). So in all honesty, I would NOT recommend having kids as an imperative to young women. If you want them, that's fine; but stop and ask whether you want them because you love children so much, or because you are being pressured on all sides to have them at all costs.

If young women stopped feeling that kids were an absolute necessity, they would be free to make much more rational choices about whether marriage and starting a family should really be part of their lifestyles.

Paul, this advice is all well and good, but rather impractical for anyone who has a "real" life (which you may or may not consider a real life). What I mean by that is a spouse, kids, and a house to maintain.

After reading your advice here, and reading Richard Hamming's essay as you recommended, I was left with the feeling that I simply don't have enough luxury hours to be "great," given that I have real-life duties that cannot simply be cast aside as your so-called Type B errands.

Do you think it is impossible to be simultaneously great AND a working mom / working dad? And I don't mean a parent who neglects the spouse and kids. If you have the answers and advice, maybe you could make this a topic for one of your future essays.

Lena, I totally agree with you about how dishonorable it is to be a "brat" vs. a "slut".

But I'm only partially in agreement with you about Harvard students. I graduated from Harvard about a decade ago. There was a plethora of overprivileged brats in my class. So unless things have changed dramatically there in the last 10 years, I suspect that overprivileged brats still run amok there.

In general, I found that the fields of math, physical sciences, and computer science had fewer of these brats. The students who concentrated in these areas were extremely hardworking, and by and large they got into Harvard because they were highly talented, not because they were children of "legacies".

This is not to say that Harvard students who concentrated in other fields were uniformly brats, but that there was a noticeable difference between the science vs., say, the government students.

Also, a word of caution to you (and unlike other commenters, I'm not cautioning you about your sex life!): If or when you do become a full-time writer, don't become a hermit. Make it a point to socialize actively, because it is through your experiences with other people that you gain the richness for your writing material. Also, becoming a hermit writer makes you less socially fit - believe me, I've seen what's happened to some of my writer classmates.

It's amazing, the kind of expectations society has always foisted upon women. Today, if we want kids, men make fun of us and say that we're desperate. If we DON'T want kids, men think we're bitches.

I think deep down inside, men are afraid of women who don't want children. Sure, they make fun of the women who do want kids, but they're secretly relieved that such women exist, so they can pass on their genes and be dads without having to share equally in childrearing. A woman who admits she doesn't want kids is seen as a downright threat to society.

Advice I'd give to both sexes is to postpone having kids until: 1) you know exactly how much work that entails, and 2) you are absolutely, completely sure you want them anyway. Otherwise, you're heading for disaster and regret.

For some background, I'm quite a bit older than you, a formerly devout Christian, and now a professional / mom / wife who doesn't claim to be an "expert" on this topic.

1/1/09 - A thought formulated itself in my mind today, fed by multiple little observations that I'd always suppressed because they went against the common grain. The thought is this:

WOMEN ENJOY PURSUING AS MUCH AS MEN DO.

We're told over and over again not to do it: in Christian books, in relationship books, by family and friends and acquaintances. Books like The Rules tell us that "Biologically, he's the aggressor," while Jay McInerny says, "Men are predators, which means they prefer to pursue rather than be pursued." These sources invoke a pseudo-biological reason for why men should pursue while women should just sit still and respond: because it's NATURE. Well, bullshit. Females of other species don't just sit there and expect males to provide. THEY are the providers. Look at lions and bears and birds. Females are the hunters, the predators. It's in our nature, all right!

I hate when books and people say, "But you women are LUCKY, because if you let the men pursue, you can just sit back and relax." Bullshit to that, too. Tell men to do that, and see how much they like it. No one likes to sit around passively. We were born and made for action. It is cruel to tell half the species that they can't pursue what they want; that they must wait for the other half of the species to initiate. How can anyone "relax" in such circumstances?

I think this is the same as all other historical examples of men suppressing women. Trying to keep women out of the workforce, because they supposedly don't have the brains. Trying to force wives to submit to husbands, because that's supposedly what God wants. Now - trying to keep women from pursuing, because in nature males supposedly do the pursuing. Anyone can see the utter inanity in these arguments.

Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider might respond, "Well, we're telling women not to pursue because it doesn't work." In other words, they invoke a practical reason. But I think this argument may fall to the wayside in time. After all, 50 years ago, women professors might have heard, "Don't strive to become Department Chair because it doesn't work." And indeed, 50 years ago it was nearly impossible, because of male resistance. But today, many female department chairs exist.

Women can and should do anything we want. We should be wary any time others try to limit us based on our sex. Thankfully, it's un-PC today to say that girls can't do math - but we still hear that women shouldn't pursue. I hope all such false sexual dichotomies will fall away in the near future. "In nature," after all, females don't limit themselves in any way. They live their lives to the fullest.

Lena, a few comments here (please take any advice in the spirit of helping, not criticizing or pointing the finger):

1. It would be helpful for you not to see the world so much in black and white. You seem to believe that the only two options are to lead a very public life or to "disappear." Most of us live in-between. We choose not to reveal everything about our lives to perfect strangers, yet we're also not hermits. You will find that it is a lifelong struggle to determine just how much you can reveal to others, and who is sufficiently trustworthy that you can bare your thoughts and feelings. My own experiences have taught me that it is better to hold back; to reveal my deepest concerns and thoughts only to long-time trusted family and friends.

2. It is natural for you to feel trepidation about re-entering Harvard as a student. That is one brutal place, to put it frankly. I graduated from there long ago, and every time I revisit, there is tension in the air that is thick enough to cut with a knife. How we all survived is a mystery. The only advice I can give you is to put your chin up, keep a stiff upper lip, and remember that you only have two more terms to go. Then whatever you do afterwards almost certainly will be less brutal - which does not mean "less prestigious" or "less rewarding." Just less of a pain in the neck, to put it frankly.

3. I don't think it is a bad thing that you learned that you can't trust everyone. Everyone has to learn this at one point or another in his/her life, and it is always cruel when it does happen. But you pick yourself up (as you have done), learn whom you CAN trust, and go on with your life. It doesn't mean you have to be cynical about everyone or everything.

What are the adverse health effects of your current HPV, if any, given that the vaccine protects against the ones that cause cancer? Is the only real risk that you might pass it on to a partner: no real health risk to yourself?

She "forced" the FDA put to Plan B over the counter. She "created" children's health care. I don't follow campaigns, I don't read websites, I don't listen to speeches. I go to a candidate's Senate webpage, I research them on Thomas, and I figure out what they did and did not vote for.

Is the first and only defense of Obama that I've seen that makes sense. As a hyper-pro-choice woman who has been planning to vote third party because Obama is *shitty* on choice issues, THAT is the kind of defense I need to hear regarding that vote. I still have my doubts, the Roberts vote wasn't in a vacuum and can easily be placed in the same box as his "present" votes and his desire to "reach out" to anti-choicers, but it jolted me and made me see things differently.

I do respect his views on how SCOTUS nominations are supposed to work. Well, actually I don't, but I understand where he's coming from. I had a very long discussion with a friend about the nomination process and he took the same view that it should be a blanket confirmation without bringing politics into it. My qualms with this is more of an issue with the Democratic Party at large and is yet another reason why I'm considering a third party vote.

By counting all the votes, Hillary has already earned the nomination. A couple things, though. You're saying that Obama was only upset about being called a Muslim or having his qualifications questioned. But looking at it, there's no direct quote of what you said (that could be the reporter inserting examples, or campaign surrogates), and I don't consider it unlikely that Obama wouldn't mention more damaging slurs because he doesn't want to repeat them. So he'll say "she called me a Muslim," (which amounts to a slur in our disgusting political environment), but he won't say "she didn't say anything about the Obama-monkey on a t-shirt."

Politicians are singularly egotistical public figures. Obama is, Clinton is. I am pretty sure this debate would be occurring in almost exact reverse if Clinton had closely won the nomination, with blacks rightly angered about Bill's SC comment and Geraldine's remarks, etc., etc. Clinton would counter with the misogyny she faced in the public arena. So as a card carrying member of the crowd that "just doesn't get it," I'll admit, yeah, I don't get it. My point is that the press and the public has been quite nasty to both of them. On the other hand, when McCain says "I will overturn Roe," or touts his record of near perfect conservatism, the press says "Psst...he's not really that way, and by the way, Obama's black."

Unree, you say that like Clinton somehow was a perfect manifestation of political graciousness and respect. I have a different opinion that no one here is likely to change. Obama said some stupid ass stuff (I couldn't believe he was so dumb as to use the word "sweetie," but then, he personally apologized afterwards), but Clinton has done equally bad. "Hardworking, white Americans" was one thing, but there was also "won't throw my lot in with economists" (which came out from Begala, which I will not hold Clinton to per your standard, as "can't win with eggheads and African Americans alone"). While educated people are hardly a marginalized group, Clinton, to me, consistently showed disregard for education, intelligence and good advice.

My point is this: Clinton and Obama neatly divided the electorate. The vote was incredibly close and Obama only won because he outmaneuvered Clinton in delegate strategy. Yet both of them would have played the "you don't have anywhere else to go" game after winning. Obama expects women and hopes blue collar folks will come back to the fold. You'd have to be mad to think that Clinton wouldn't fully expect black and "latte liberals" to vote for her. And I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts she wouldn't have apologized for disparaging them non stop.

To quote from the "feminism 101" link up top: When someone engages in divisive behavior, any resulting division is their responsibility. It is, simply, not the duty of any person who is repeatedly subjected to alienating language, images, behaviors, and/or legislation to nonetheless never complain and pledge fealty from the margins.

Here, here. Obama should own up, or at the very least stop making it worse. But gawd, Hillary is far from a saint, and I doubt you'd find she "gets it" were she the nominee.

I'm not saying Hillary Clinton is an evil bitch and I don't believe it's true either. Clinton is a politician, just like Barack Obama. I'm just not sure what it is we can reasonably make a goal here. I think that Obama will be strongly pushing women's rights when he campaigns with Clinton. Is that enough? Or does he need to unilaterally disarm and claim that a misogynistic media was a large part of his primary victory? What, in short, need Obama say and do to fix the divisions that are his responsibility?

And yes, while I may have poorly phrased things or made unhelpful statements, I stand by my assertion that Hillary has caused as deep of divisions in the electorate as Obama. Is she responsible for those divisions, as Obama is his, or is she absolved of such responsibility because "it's over" and she's not the nominee?

I just can't even understand the inner workings of the brain that reads a post like that and thinks I'm advocating a vote for McCain. Sigh.

My guess is that the process adds a few more assumptions to the chain of logic. They do not necessarily hold (as in your case), but they might be:

--Candidates A and B are the only candidates for whom a vote may generate electoral benefit (to the candidate)
--There is no non-electoral benefit that outweighs that possibility of electoral benefit in voting for another candidate

These conditions may not hold in many situations--those where a vote for third party may give true electoral benefit (such as media recognition, public financing, or even the possibility of winning an election), or where the possibility of affecting the election is very low (DC or Utah, maybe), or where simply not giving your vote to a particular candidate is more important than him/her winning or losing. But assuming those above, right or wrong, the conclusion that you should vote for A becomes correct.

So, wither now from here? A Kos diary about the "Overton window" (here and here) is a possible option. Even if the assumptions hold and you should vote for candidate A, you can affect the election/political/social climate in other ways. Food for thoughts.

Nothing annoys me more than supposed rational thinkers defending religious tripe. Just because you "have a religious friend" who's "not like that" doesn't mean that the vast majority of religious people/rituals deserve any amount of respect. These "not like that" "religious friends" who are truly offended by stealing the cracker (because it shits on their fairy tale beliefs) while also being equally offended by the death threats these people are getting (because it shits on their fairy tale belief that christianity is kind) are not people we should be concerning ourselves with. Someone who places equal footing of crackers with death threats are no better than the people who are engaging in the death threats themselves.

Sure, yeah, it's not nice to shit on someone's belief. This is similar to telling a kid that Santa Claus doesn't exist. It's mean, really mean. But it's also an unequivocal truth. Trying to get someone fired for not lying is ridiculous.

Sure, maybe Boomers agreed with these movements but I certainly can't think of a social movement actually instigated by Boomers. Hell, even third-wave feminism is led by non-Boomers for the most part.

The social movement that people identify with Boomres is that of the 80s/90s family values crowd that destroyed gains made by the civil rights/feminist movements.

I originally intended to send this email to the author of this particular article but I can't find her email address online. Because I'm getting more annoyed the more I think about it, I am sending it to you as the person who "represents the readers." I've enjoyed reading the NYTimes for years and this article is not representative of the quality of reporting I have come to anticipate.

When I saw the headline Europe Takes Aim at Sexual Stereotyping in Ads, I was eager to read it. Marketing relies on such base archetypes to sell products that I'm often flat out insulted when I see how people are represented and I mentally applauded Europe for addressing it. Unfortunately, this paragraph:

Clearly, the advertising industry is not quaking in its boots. But the move, however laughable as a gesture of political correctness, may well provoke some debate among agency executives and their clients about the messages they are sending. (That said, the people who approved the gender-stereotype measure are the same ones who suggested that all car advertisements should have warning labels because of the toxic impact of gas fumes.)

I enter this paragraph by first being told to prepare my eyes for a rolling of a lifetime because this is such a "laughable gesture of political correctness". Then I'm told something really important: this measure may take roots! Advertising companies are likely to debate sexism imagery! This is good news, right? Why was I supposed to roll my eyes again? Then the paragraph shoves me out with an unnecessary, offhand remark denigrating Parliment's support of warning labels for toxic fumes. Clearly a person who doesn't see what's worthy of laughter with this gesture is supposed to dismiss the froofy Europeans with their baguettes and great wine and concern for social welfare after hearing about ... gas fumes in an article about sexist marketing.

The paragraph implies that the writer and the reader are flat-out ignorant of the social effect that billions of dollars (euros, persumably) spent on advertising causes on society as a whole. Perhaps the writer is so unaware, but I do not appreciate being lumped into that category. Finally, although this is not my area of expertise, two of the possible derided "toxic impacts of gas fumes" may be breast cancer and increased rate of miscarriage. The mockery of this idea, however, has caused me to wholly doubt the bits and pieces I have read about the topic over the year.

So as I said, I'm quite impressed that Europe took this issue on. I'm disappointed in the shoddy reporting on this issue but I hope I can find an original press release from Parliment in order to read an unbiased report (or at least a report with an educated bias) about it.

I think it's motivated by many of the same observations you have here, in that there's a suggestion that it doesn't actually make the campaigners or Democrats generally look all that great.

Given that most of the women I've ever dated have been Democrats to some degree or another, I really hope that the statistics cited there aren't true... ;-)

Damn it, Will, I was planning on ripping Brooks a new one over this latest travesty of his. But you've already done it with your characteristic skill and flair. Sigh. Oh well. Nicely done!

The only things I might add are these. First, Brooks is acting like this is revelatory stuff, when in fact philosophers have worried about this very issue since at least Hume, who famously said that reason is, and ought to be, the handmaid to the passions, or words to that effect. And as you pointed out, even if this is what most non-philosophers do, it hardly follows that this is what everybody does, or should do, or is capable of doing. He should do some reading on the Naturalistic Fallacy.

Second, given the close tie between ethics and politics, I'm wondering how Brooks would characterize his own enterprise as a political commentator. If reason is truly impotent as the medium for discourse, wouldn't that make political commentating sort of useless? Unless, perhaps, he sees it as his job to appeal to people's emotions to get them on board with whatever he believes in. But that sounds more like a propagandist, or at best, an advertiser, than a public intellectual, which surely is more how Brooks would like to see himself.

that's nonsense. Cydia is an amazing achievement by Saurik, offering a *fully functional* set of UNIX utilities, unlike the broken 'BSD Subsystem' offered by nullriver. Furthermore, it's completely open-source, and because it's based on the Debian APT package-management system, is thoroughly documented, tried, and tested. Besides, with the launch of the appstore, I sincerely doubt nullriver will maintain installer anymore (not that they did much before anyway). My vote is to kill Installer stone-dead by never including it, and to stick with Cydia, which is more reliable, more logical and safer.

The product is sold in Australia for the most part I imagine. In Australian paintball slang a "killer" is a player with excpetional skill. The average paintballer who owns a marker themselves and will be playing and purchasing the products is over 18 as it is a legal requirement to having a paintball marker permit. The purchasing of a paintball marker is ilegal without one.

Paintball is not a sport feasable for children with mums and pops to play in aus and therefore I don't see anything wrong with it.

The Killer paintballs are fantastic paintballs. Shoot straight as an arrow. The Blood ones are also brilliant a hit from one stands out like a sore thumb. No possible way to wipe.

Speaking of previous Fallout games while the original Fallout 1 and 2 had children which were in fact killable some non-US releases had the children "removed"(fixable with a fan made patch) due to laws in those countries which I am guessing have now reached America. had to watch it a few times but yeah its fake. There is no fuel spray when the wing breaks (as a stunt plane there may have been no fuel in the wings for a day out to stay lighter) but the flaps in those things are all controlled by wires and directly connected to the joystick. Now it is possible that the wires snapped cleanly not taking any debris at ALL with them (mountings etc) but its not possible he could fight against the stick while its tight. secondly the wires are generally going to hold longer than the aluminum joystick. let alone its articulation joint. finally wings (and i would think especially on stunt planes) are not sticky taped onto the plane. There are support structures from the fuselage into the wing and vice verse as it is all built as one structure... none can be seen on either the wing or the fuselage. Again it is all POSSIBLE that it sheared cleanly possible there was no fuel in the tanks and possible it did 0 damage to his controls. but if he had the revs up enough to employ that helicopter RC stunt going as slow as he was landing I am fairly sure the torq would of flipped him over more than once and taken the other wing off.

I think they're used more for calibration. You measure with satellite, then you measure at the same place and time (more or less) with the UAV, and then you compare. If you get the same readings, your probability of having a well calibrated sensor is much higher.

I suggest the following:

numpy + scipy + matplotlib + ipython + pil (python imaging library).

Then use interactive python via ipython -pylab. It's really quite an amazing environment. There are also many addon libraries, depending on what you want to do. It would be nice if these packages were all bundled together.

If you want more symbolic stuff (sounds like you don't) then check out sage (www.sagemath.org). It's a bundling of many of the components above, but also has many other things.

I am not sure what components jj was referring to. I found numpy quite comprehensive.

Why should we stigmatize mental illness as though it were much different from physiological illness? Indeed, I'm surprised that only 1/3 of the Harvard men ever had a bout of mental illness by age 50. Virtually everyone I know (mid-30s) has had at least one bout of clinical depression, anxiety, panic disorders, etc. Perhaps these Harvard men were indeed more privileged than the average, in spite of having undergone WWII.

Multi platform games that are created on the 360 as a lead platform will always fall short on the PS3 unless they have a separate entity create the PS3 version. Each system needs to be programmed for from the ground up. If you take a game (RE5) and build it from the ground up on the 360 then "tweak" the code to make it run on the PS3, you will always have a shortfall due to the totally different architectures. The PS3 requires the Dev to be creative with memory allocation, streaming, and multi-processor programming techniques. The 360 runs more like a PC so it is extremely simple for Devs that have experience on the PC to make a game.

I studied one semester of comp architecture(one of the most boring/interesting courses out there) and can tell you even when programming for different RAM architectures, this requires you to start from the ground up.

To put it simply multi-platform Devs have time/money constraints which make them choose one platform to Dev for then port to the other. If you want to truly make a AAA PS3 hit (fully utilizing the PS3), you need to make the game only for the PS3 only as the 360 neither has the storage capacity or the horsepower to get these games, like KZ2, Uncharted, Heavy Rain, etc. to run.

I'm sorry but i think security issue on this is being way over played. These things have a 2-3 inch read radius. If you don't want the government tracking you or someone stealing your car don't put your hand directly on top of a reader. And if you think someone may have gotten a read on your chip, it will take them sometime to crack the encryption. You should be able to unplug the system in your car and dust off your car keys with plenty of time to spare.

As for getting your hand cut off, the average car theif will quickly figure out you don't have a car key and take your wallet instead. Besides its easier to use a slim jim and crack the stearing column than it is to saw through bone, if your theif happens to have a surgical saw on him.

The governing system of the Islamic Republic is an ugly hybrid of theocracy and republicanism. It's dysfunctional because theocracy and republicanism maintain mutually exclusive notions of sovereignty and accountability. Republicanism grants ultimate authority to the people. Theocracy grants ultimate sovereignty to God. Very strange bedfellows.

Similarly, though not identically, the Baha'i Faith attempts to combine the notion of divine sovereignty with representative democracy.

How else would you describe a system where voters elect delegates that ultimately vote for a supreme legislative body that is purported to be unerring and divinely guided in its pronouncements and activities, and excluded from the type of accountability entailed by representative democracy? (It's worth mentioning that the Veylat-i-Faqih is supposed to be chosen in a similar manner.)

Farhan, the Baha'i Faith sees itself as the solution to the world's problems and its aim is to convert the world - you know it, I know it, everyone here knows it. Granted, it intends to do this through persuasion rather than coercion. However, the goal remains the same.

And I have no doubt that if the Baha'i Faith were to ever become the dominant religion of a state it would show the same level of intolerance for dissent, criticism and non-belief as all other state sanctioned religions.

The same fanatical hysteria that fuels the rage of a Basji thug exists in nascent seed form in your and Masud's wild failings against anything that doesn't pass your ideological litmus test.

The Baha'i theory of governance, with its emphasis on the infallibility of the UHJ, shares a common provenance with the Usuli Twelver Shia notion of the velayat-i-faqhi.

I am not talking about individuals; I am talking about the blueprint of said instiutions. I am no comparing the current actions of the IRI regime to the actions of the UHJ; I am comparing the blueprint of the V of F to the blueprint of the UHJ.

These two models, though not identical, share three salient features.

Both models of governance maintain that society requires infallible top-down guidance, otherwise society will be dysfunctional.

Both models disparage dissent and criticism of the directives of the infallible body.

Both models maintain that the infallible body is accountable only to God. (Exception: the supreme leader can be removed by a major vote by the assembly of experts, which has never happened in the IRI's 30-year history)

In my opinion, a just model of governance requires accountability and competence. Accountability is necessary for competence. The three aforementioned premises shared by V of F and the UHJ are antithetical to good governance insofar as they undermine accountability, and, therefore, competence.

The blueprint of the V of F has failed to create a just society.
The blueprint of the UHJ is sufficiently analogous to the V of F.
It follows, then, by logical analogy, that the blueprint of the UHJ will fail to create a just society.

I suspect you would challenge the second premise, and claim that there are salient dissimilarities that would preclude a common fate.

In brief, the failings of the V of F are due to a faulty blueprint, not the failings of a particular individual. Similarly, the Baha'i model is faulty in design.

I believe the current evils of the Islamic Republic of Iran should serve as cautionary tale for those who hope and work for a Baha'i state and Baha'i global governance.

It should be - if the Baha'i system is divinely inspired then it will flourish, because flourishing is a necessary condition for determining divine inspiration; divine inspiration is sufficient for flourishing. So if it does not flourish (negation of the consequent), then it follows that it is not divinely inspired.

What are you metrics for "flourishing"?

I disagree that the world needs a "miracle," or God to telephone divine schematics to a middleman engineer who then shares it with all the construction workers.

The world needs greater accountability and competence. The world needs individuals that are committed to justice and equality. Individuals that work for positive, incremental change, not Utopian miracles.

The world does NOT need those committed to setting up another system with pretenses to divine guidance and infallibility. It's been tried. And it's failed. (I know, I know - the other ones lacked the holy spirit, and so on.)

The relative stability, freedom and prosperity enjoyed in the western world is a consequence of The Enlightenment, not the adoption of Baha'i principles - an anachronistic claim that you regularly make. Baha'is enjoy freedom of assembly and speech in the west because of Voltaire, Kant, Rosseau, Paine and others, not Baha'u'llah.

But like many fundamentalist Muslims who enjoy the freedoms of the west, Baha'is hypocritically hiss at western society, fantasizing about its downfall - so they can swoop in and fill the vacuum. With what? More of the same. Infallibility and divine guidance, proven over and over again to be anathema to human progress.

Of course, liberal democracy is rife with flaws, but regressing to systems predicated on infallibility is taking several profoundly tragic steps backwards. progression. The Baha'i model of governance is not a viable corrective to the flaws of liberal democracy. It's regression, not progression.

Moreover, history shows us that the oppressed very often take on the characteristics of the oppressor. Baha'is are not immune from this, and the current contempt they show for those who disagree with them does not bode well for any future Baha'i state.

When the initial goal of mass conversion fails, the response is to broaden the definition of what qualifies as success. It shifts from declarations to people responding positively to the Baha'i message.

Your claim that the Baha'i Faith's only goal is to effect attitudinal change at the individual and collective level makes it sound more like a non-profit social organization than a religion, which does not jive with Baha'i scripture.

So many people walked out on Speed Racer last night where I was seated at. I enjoyed the visuals , the CGI animation, the smooth fluid colors, and the editing. Christina Ricci and Emile Hirsh were awesome.

The story sucked, though. It could have been 100 times better if the Wachowski Brothers let someone else direct it, while being in charge of visual effects.

this discussion is actually pretty interesting. I didnt know that Nicholson based the Joker on Cesar Romero, because to be honest, I thought the 1989 Batman movie was crap. I saw it again after 19 years on TV and I thought to myself, "wow, people liked this crap when it came out in 89?" I wanted more Quantum.

The movie is called Quantum of Solace, is it not? I thought the movie was going to be more about bringing down the mystery organization or witnessing it's scope. The only time we got that was at the opera scene, which I thought was a very cool. Additionally, Bond barely dispatched the villain in CR, but almost handily beat the leader of this supposedly more sinister organization.

Regardless, the movie still gets high marks: craig was great, dench was great, and the locales were cool. I think CR was better, but Quantum was still fun and I am happy with where the franchise is going. Just expected something different in this movie I guess.

PS, mini-spoiler...

I don't think I can buy the possibility a trained killer can get away from a group of other trained professional killers in an elevator. Didn't buy it in die hard 3, didn't buy it in MI3, didn't buy it last night. Weird, I know. I can believe Bond taking on a dozen special ops guys or some guy in a super electricity suit, but just not in an elevator.

This ending was far better. It showed that he had mistakenly thought the creatures had lost
all their human attributes and were mindless creatures. In the theatrical ending it proved to
be true. The theatrical ending butchered the rest of the movie. I believe he was so
persistent to find a cure because he thought they had lost what made them human and
didn't want that to happen. When he realized they still had it I think he was able to accept it
and leave.
Still don't like the look of the creatures though.

Maybe you should read the bill before criticizing it.

All businesses, under the law, can have smoking rooms, as long as they meet ASHRAE standards for a smoking room. Which means they have to have a negative air pressure compared to the rest of the building, and separate ventilation systems, etc etc. I'm pretty sure its the ashrae standards they invoke.

As with everything, I suppose there are good and bad designs/implementations.

Sad to hear that some of them are quite bad; it could leave a bad taste in people's mouth (sorry for the mental picture) and keep them from wanting the good ones. I don't think that's the real problem. Here's what I think is happening:

1) Certification is more expensive than it should be right now, but it's still a minor part of the cost compared to what fertilizer/pesticides/herbicides/etc would cost. That cost can go down, but it's not the reason for the premium you pay right now.

2) The problem is that there's less supply than demand, and that there's less subsidies for organic farming (so you are paying closer to the real cost of your food - if you paid the real cost of your non-organic food, it would be more expensive).

The fact that there isn't enough supply (despite a 20% annual growth) and less subsidies encourages organic farmers to sell their product at a premium, both because they can (lots of demand) and to make up for loss of subsidies.

So yes, increasing CAFE will result in more deaths, because some people will not be willing to spend the extra money necessary to get an equally safe, yet more efficent vehicle. When I was looking at Mazda 3i's a year back, side airbags were an extra $400 - and the vast majority came out of the factory without that option. More than a few pennies, though it would have been worth it to me. ESC wasn't even an option (though they offer it on the version with the bigger engine). ESC still isn't offered on the Honda civics either, unless you go with the Si (the "boy racer" version). The consumer doesn't always have very good safety choices, especially in the smaller cars.

I suspect they don't develop for other phones as much because they don't all have the features they want, and then you probably have to code 50 different versions for different phones that all work slightly differently, and it's hard to get they apps out to people, etc.

There's that chakra sheild we heard about, the thing that gets me in a weird way is that it blocks specials. O_o. I loved the voice acting and there was Baki's, Temari's and Garra's throw, Garra's throw seems weird.

Part of it is definitely bad urban planning, or cities growing far bigger than what the original plan projected.

But it's also culture. In lots of places, motorists just don't feel like they have to be "nice" to pedestrians. Their only obligation seems to be not to hit them (and they can't even always do that..).

I like the Kakashi vs Jiraya one better, (I'm sure a lot of people might be thinking that).
