in Not Your “Trophy” First Lady?? on YBPGuide
If these black women are saying that they believe Michelle Obama isn't an ideal first lady then I have to believe that this was just a poor sampling of black women.
But it seems like the interviewees are saying that they believe white people would be more comfortable with her if she "looked different." I don't know why but some black people honestly believe that white people treat black people differently based on the lightness or darkness of the skin. I don't agree with that line of thinking. I personally find her beautiful, radiant, intelligent and the perfect first lady. I think she would easily be the most attractive first lady that I have ever seen.

in A YBP Facebook Debate: Barack vs. Hillary pt. 3 on YBPGuide
Obama's answers aren't general and he is clearly the more intelligent of the two. His answers are clearly just as specific as Hillary's. If someone disagrees, I'd like to see a side by side comparison of answers each gave at a debate. Either way, politicians have always been feeding the people the same old recycled lines, but now supposedly some people are soooo concerned about lack of substance. Yeah, right.

in Egypt: Blacks or … non-blacks on YBPGuide
Curt,
Its nice to read that you consider ancient Egyptian civilization advanced. If you are impressed with their ancient civilization, you would surely be impressed with that of Egypt's neighbor, Sudan. There are actually more pyramids within Sudan's borders than there are in Egypt and the people of Sudan are undeniably black, black, black.
Furthermore, being able to build a mud hut and hunt gazelle is pretty damn advanced. I'd imagine that most of us in "advanced" countries would be dead within 3 weeks if the grocery store closed for good.
Anyway, since there are black people within Egypt's borders and a black country to the east and to the south of Egypt, I don't believe that anyone, without some hard scientific proof, could say that ancient Egyptians were not black.

I think oppressed people can always oppress others in the same or a lower position, so I do believe black people can be racist.

Thanks for the budget calculator link. I have always considered myself cheap so I never put much thought into actually budgeting. Now I have finally realized that all those cheap purchases add up very quickly.

in Do we really need Black Music Month? on YBPGuide
I don't know. I have a hard time believing that people sincerely have absolutely no clue what "black music" is. I mean, I have heard members of other groups refer to various aspects of their own culture, including music, so I am just confused about how people can claim not to know what type of music is traditionally a part of black culture. I know that one of my best friends told me how soca reminded her of Nigerian music, so I do think that different cultures typically have different styles of music. When I think of black music, I first think that the term is specifically referencing african american music & culture. When I think of African-American culture, I think of rock & roll, blues, jazz, r &b, hip hop, and even "pop" music. I think "black" music has more to do with culture, than skin color.

in Why do people hate on Tyler Perry? on YBPGuide
I imagine that some of the haters want to blame Perry for the fact that the black entertainment tends to be so one dimensional. I also imagine that some of the haters are scared of what good white people will think when they see black people behaving so "stereotypically" and "low brow." Overall, I agree that most of Perry's haters just have their own issues.

in YBPs: The Advanced Degree Chasers on YBPGuide
I admit that one of the first things I thought when I read this article was that blacks are probably enrolling in grad programs at a higher rate than whites because we have have a harder time than whites getting hired with just the bachelors. Also there are certain majors that definitely won't leave you with the big salary that most people desire from their college degree. However, I do think that more education, for whatever reason, will benefit the black community as a whole.

in black wine. black pride. on YBPGuide
Thanks for posting this. During black history month, a friend and I went to an African wine tasting and we noticed that all the African wines came from South Africa and we couldn't help but wonder if they were black owned vineyards. Although, I still don't know if the wines we had were from black owned vineyards, it is nice to know that they do exist.

in The Wonders of YOGA on YBPGuide
I, along with two friends, took this class. The intensity of this yoga class is the equivalent of taking tae-bo in the middle of the sahara desert. This class goes well beyond just stretching and pushes your body and lungs to the limits. It is extremely challenging, but fun and quite a unique workout experience.

in paris, texas. in plain view on YBPGuide
The discriminatory sentencing in Paris, Texas happens all over Texas. Doesn't Texas hold the dubious title of putting the most black men to death in this country? The entire state needs to change and its going to be up to black people to force that change.

13 pounds in one week from yoga!! Wow, and I thought it was just stretching. I was thinking of taking yoga just to loosen up my very stiff muscles but the possible weight loss makes the yoga idea even better.

in Are we tired of rap music? on YBPGuide
I have been praying for the demise of rap for a minute. I cant stand the image that it sends to us and the rest of the world about what it means to be black. The entertainment industry shouldnt be as powerful as it is in controlling people minds and behaviors, but the unfortunate reality is that it is extremely powerful. I can only hope that once rap goes far, far away that things will not continue to fall apart as they have been in the last 15 years or so.

in Would You Live on MLK Drive? on YBPGuide
I actually lived on MLK Drive when I was a kid, 35th and King Drive. And as the cnn article stated, the MLK Drive I lived on did not then and does not now fit the stereotype of "a place where you don't want to be," unless you have a problem with an all black neighborhood. Even today, I would live on King Dr. in Chicago, at least.
