Her campaign website shows 3 issues: Iraq (surrender), Education (more money not accountability) and Health Care (socialized), which I presume is what she ran on. Then when elected she declares her focus will be Civil Rights. Bait and swithc? The parade funding should have given us a clue. Welcome to 1 term Ms. Richardson. Another one putting the "con" in Congress.

Re: WILL NO ONE STAND UP FOR CONDOMINIUMS? | The District Weekly

You ask why everyone hates renters, I ask why does everyone hate landlords? I guess they are just like the Chamber--hate those who provide the jobs, hate those who provide the housing. It's not their park, it is the public's park and they paid for their film permits. Should I go sit down at the partk at lunchtime, or any other part of town where there may be filming, and expect a free lunch or some swag? I find it interesting that John Johnston lived in apartments that were torn down and then he "had" to live in the park. He was paying rent before, then he couldn't? Why not? That is the story to be looking at, not why a film company won't feed homeless people. Why did Johnston go from having an apartment to living in the park? It could not be just because they tore down the building--unless he was a squatter and not paying rent. So instead of trying to paint another corporation with a coat of taint, why not dig a little into those who are in the park?

Re: RICH GET A LOT RICHER | The District Weekly

So the tax cuts worked. First, income tax revenue has been at record levels--no matter how numbers are adjusted. Second, as stated in the article because of the tax cuts the wealthiest Americans, who are much more likely to hold stock and other assets, sold those assets and paid taxes on their gains--something they had not been doing previously. Third, not calculated in the report is the significant increase in the wealth of middle-income earners through their growth in 401k and retirement accounts--not counted because they are not yet taxed. The article only casually mentions the increase in the middle income bracket, but fails to mention it outpaced inflation--statistical spread by the way on 20% of the income earners is huge, the difference between those at the top of the middle fifth and bottom of the middle fifth is quite significant. Fourth, the top 1% in income paid 27.6% of all taxes--up over 20% in two years--that is a huge amount of revenue and the 20% increase is very significant. But it takes too much honesty in reporting to not bash the uber-wealthy and of course any chance to take a mindless pot-shot at Bush. The tax breaks have worked: longest period of economic growth in post-War history, longest number of years of increasing tax revenue in post-War history; unfortunately the drunken sailors in Washington can't stop spending money.

Re: RICH GET A LOT RICHER | The District Weekly

I am amazed at the assumptions and judgements made by the not-opened minded (also known as liberal Democrats) regarding other people's politics, wealth, religious beliefs and values then have to name call to "support" their suppossed argument. Instead of calling me, I assume you mean me, a monkey why do you not try to argue the facts that the tax revenue falls overwhelmingly on the highest income earners--which is what it is suppossed to do. Why do you not argue against the Laffer Curve which has been proven time and again and should Congress let the tax cuts expire and bring back higher taxes will show and immediate decrease in tax revenue. Try a real arguement instead of name calling. All of your comments in this site are so similar in lack of depth, lack of reasoning and then labelling or name calling those with whom you disagree. I suppose that is what the left has left.

Re: RICH GET A LOT RICHER | The District Weekly

Wrong Howie! I support the tax cuts because I understand (with a degree) economics--it is not ideological, it is logical. How are tax cuts not in my best interest? How is having more tax revenue into the Treasury with less paid by me and my fellow citizens not in my best interest? Ideological would be supporting a tax increase that would reduce tax revenue, would reduce investment of capital, reduce transfer of capital through sale of investments, reduce employment, reduce major capital expenditures and reduce the amount of funds available for assisting expansion of business and therefore jobs. <br><br>What you are arguing that I do appears to be exactly what you are doing. Democratic leaders go on and on about tax cuts for the rich when in fact everyone received tax cuts--and the "rich" the smallest--while allowing the middle class to pay even higher taxes through the AMT they have not and will not get rid of. Following their argument that the deficit is because of tax cuts for the rich is buying into a bogus ideological arguement when the facts show incredible increase in tax revenue while the deficit was growing even faster. I buy into tax cuts, I do not buy into the wholesale spending of increased tax revenues by first a GOP controlled Congress and now a Demo controlled Congress and W's refusal to veto any of the b.s. spending bills presented when Repubs were in control. Remove yourself from the ideology presented by liberal leadership that taxes are good and taxes on the wealthy are not only great but mandatory for a better country; look at the facts of revenue collection, economic growth and growth of investments for those of us in IRAs, 401(k)s and other retirement accounts we will need to support ourselves after Social Security is bankrupt and we do not get out of it what we have contributed.

Re: RICH GET A LOT RICHER | The District Weekly

Okay howard I will stoop to your level: your assumptions about me make you look like an ignorant fool incapable of presenting a valid arguement in a discussion. Hard to blame someone for legally avoiding paying taxes--do you voluntarily pay more? You can you know, IRS will allow you to voluntarily overpay. So instead of blaming those who take advantage of legal write-offs and off shore accounts, Congress should be blamed instead for allowing a ridiculous tax code that has thousands of little benefits and perks for their supporters. I would like to see the loopholes closed, allow deductions for mortgage interest, education, medical, legitimate business expenses, retirement accounts and that is it. Cap the top bracket at 30% and get rid of the incredible number of deductions. As well I would put the cap on SSI contributions at $250k per individual instead of the current $90k (or it may be $92k I can't remember since I don't hit it).

Re: AL AUSTIN IN THE 6TH? | The District Weekly

Back from vacation (being a working man needed a break), are you implying that the only people who support "working families" are unions?

Re: DOUG KRIKORIAN ON THE NFL: HE&#8217;S CRYING, BUT HIS TEARS ARE FAR AWAY | The District Weekly

I would only support a team in LB if the model is similar to Green Bay's with public ownership of the team--or at least a portion. New home sales usually drop first and fastest since they are on the outer rings of urban/suburban areas and the builders can drop the prices on new stages to move the inventory and payoff the dirt. Most builders have been building on land purchased long, long ago and the last several years their profits have been huge given the relative cheap dirt they locked in. Median prices have fallen because the homes that are selling are 1st time buyer type properties, condos, etc. and the upper ends of the markets are not moving or even being listed. Most of the foreclosure defaults are falling around the median area prices which leads to that line moving down. Even with the troubles in the sector the last half of 2007 more Americans experience homeownership now than ever before. Finally, the subprime market consists of less than 10% of the new loans funded in the past 4-5 years for the country.

Re: ROMNEY SUSPENDS HIS CAMPAIGN! The enimity that he inspired (inspires) with conservatives blinds them to his many somewhat conservative achievements. Same with Bush. He has been a great President for Democrats if they can get past their BDS to look at what he hath wrought: expanded Fed government, huge domestic spending, attempts at immigration reform that would bring amnesty into the picture and allow hundreds of thousands, if not millions, more immigrants to surge north, Federal intervention into education, he signed McCain-Feingold, and he was lighting rod that allowed Dems to regain control of Congress. <br><br>Get past the emotional hatred and look at the deeds and both sides should see that perhaps the man they hate did more to further their own agendas than the man they love(d).<br><br>Too bad the Golden Spoon filter appears to apply to your view of candidates, it precludes you from supporting Hillary or Obama!

Re: ARE WE STUPID? | The District Weekly

It depends on what your defition of "is" is, I mean that could get complicated. For Gabelich to take the leap to "Long Beach brought to you by Coca-Cola" is intellectually deficient (no surprise for her). Further she seems to think that the graffiti on the bus stops are because of the advertising in them, how ridiculous is that? The graffiti is because the city/county/state have wasted billions of dollars on anti-gang/graffiti programs that have not worked and will not work but they feel good about them so they spend more money. I would love to see a garbage truck go down my alley some Thursday painted like a Glad trashbag box, knowing that several hundred thousand dollars was being paid into our general fund by the company; or the street sweeper painted Simple Green; or our maintenance vehicles orange with a Home Depot logo on them. Simple partnerships that make sense could bring in significant money--seven to eight figures--not "nothing" as Gabelich claims. We are broke but somehow can take huge revenue possibilities off the table so as not to offend the evidently delicate sensibilities of the genius representing the 8th District.

Re: &#8220;HERE&#8217;S THE CITY OF LONG BEACH, SPONSORED BY COCA-COLA&#8221; | The District Weekly

Dave: Poor presentation does not make the idea poor--the choice of company may have been poor. Regarding how much power we want our government to cede to corporations--selling naming rights or service mark placement rights is ceding power? I don't see it as a displacement, or hand over, or reduction of government power but as an opportunity to increase needed revenue without taxes and without relinquishing any control. Contracting out services diminishes government power a lot more than advertising and sponsorship opportunities and that is something the city should also be looking at. As to the statement about giving away power to people we did not elect and whose loyalty is ultimately to their company...most companies treat their customers and clients better than they treat their employees, given the level of service and type of treatment many of the "customers" (i.e. you and me) receive from the city having a company with sponsorship rights in charge of customer service might just see an increase in customer/public service. I would take the customer service at Disneyland, or from American Express over that of our collections department or animal control or....

Re: CSULB STUDENTS TO PROTEST LUDACRIS SATURDAY | The District Weekly

So what did Luducris do with his Pepsi shakedown money? A job, the kind of job that will stop a bullet, requires education. A very good education is available to all in the Long Beach Unified School District. To get the education to get the job to stop the bullet, the parents of the child need to do everything they can to get their kids into classrooms, into their homework and studies. I hope the voters in the 6th keep Andrews as their Councilman, not only for the benefit of their district but for the benefit of all districts.

Re: &#8216;IT&#8217;S A DELICATE SITUATION&#8217; | The District Weekly

I am very much a supporter of limited Federal powers and states' rights having as much precedent as possible. We have several opportunities with specific issues to be hypocritical in our preference for states rights over Federal rights, or more precisely we should saw state jurisdiction over federal federal jurisdiction as I feel the word "rights" is tossed about much too freely.<br><br>I agree that the legality and use of marijuana should be a state's jurisidiction and the Feds have the right to jurisprudence and laws of interstate and international trafficking. <br><br>My question to those who support the right of California to have control of marijuana use and laws to said effect superceeding those of the Federal government is this in regards to your affinity for strong states' rights on this issue: Do you feel that states should have similar rights and control over abortions? Gay marriage? Should Kansas be able to severely restrict the conditions under which and abortion may take place? If Alaska passes legislation that allows same sex marriages or unions to replicate exactly those between man and woman, does North Dakota have to recognize those same sex unions? Do you feel that a California resident receiving medical marijuana treatment should be allowed to be treated in Utah where they may not have similar laws? Where is the line?<br><br>Picking and choosing which laws, or issues should be left to the states and which to the Federal government becomes sticky when we take specific issues we support and how the application of states' rights v. federal rights most benefits our position. Thanks for the artilce, these discussions beyond the single issue of marijuana, but to the rights and areas of authority of local, state and federal powers are critical to our being a country of laws based on the Constitution.

Re: &#8216;IT&#8217;S A DELICATE SITUATION&#8217; | The District Weekly

What about the death penalty? Take the same circumstances, let's say killing of a peace officer while committing another crime (I wish this were only hypothetical but unfortunately it happens). In Texas or California the killer can get the death penalty, in New York or New Jersey there is no death penalty. Each state has determined their own extent of equal protection and just punishment. Some argue that the same determination on the state level should apply in the case of abortion. Some states may ban, others allow under certain circumstances (danger to mother, incest, rape), other may allow it as long as the mother desires it. In both instances, taking of life--I know arguably for some/many on the abortion issue--is involved, on one side (execution) states are allowed to self-determine; on the other (abortion) federal government has precedence and states that have tried to ban or severly restrict the practice have been over turned. <br><br>I find the juxtaposition of these two issues very interesting to look at in how supporters/detractors divide. Typically pro-abortion supporters are more liberal and are anti-death penalty and anti-abortion supporters are more conservative and are pro-death penalty. The first class generally wants federal government to have final say and all states to allow abortion and ban the death penalty; the second class wants the opposite, or at minimum allow each state to decide for itself.<br><br>Breaking the Constitutional powers of the federal and states governments down to specific issues and then following to the supporters and detractors is very interesting to me. As the old cliche goes conservatives want the (federal) government out of everything but the bedroom and liberals want the (federal) government in everything but the bedroom!

Re: &#8216;IT&#8217;S A DELICATE SITUATION&#8217; | The District Weekly

DK: Let them ream, I enjoy your viewpoints and the opportunity to exam these issues that have been examined for decades in the case of abortion and longer in the case of the death penalty. I only wish that more people would examine and think about the big part of the issues; i.e. states jurisdiction v federal jurisdiction; what is the role of each level of government; what is the role of council representative, governor, senator, president. Too many voters, and non-voters, care only about the moment and the singular part of the singular issue on this day; they don't seem to think about how the issue is solved or dealt with today in relation to what it will mean five, ten or even fifty years in the future. Not that they are in any great shape with all the layoffs they have gone through as their circulation shrinks and advertisers leave. <br><br>The print media has been deathly ill for some time and they are mostly to blame. Dinosaurs who have not been able to adapt to new media, make a place for younger commentary and perspective from folks like those who produce The District, poor reporting that often is editorializing, and failure to admit their biases in an age when alternative opinions and reporting are available with a click. You folks do a great job and I very much like your "point of view essays", the points of view are clear and the information available backs them up. I also do not mind that the vast majority of MSM is clearly biased to the left, I just mind that they say they are not and try to come off as objectively reporting facts. It is damn near impossible to objectively report anything, human nature, but when editors and writers try to claim they are unbiased in their coverage and reporting it greatly diminishes their content. When 90% of a press room has voted against the guy at the podium we are suppossed to believe there will be objective coverage? I just wish they would admit it. I give the P-T great credit for their editorial pages and their use of columnists from both the left and the right-I'm pissed as often as I'm pleased which is good it makes me think and ask questions. Papers like the LATimes do not even try to put forth and opposing view and seem to think their news is the final word and readers need to accept and believe as so. <br><br>The District, LBReport, LBPost, LBTalkback (which I think needs more input from community) are all great additions to the community of ideas, varying viewpoints and discussions that are only avaible through the internet. Looking forward to Obama or Hillary restoring everything! The amount of blame you can place in one single person is terrific for a democracy, but I know the retort: Bush is an imperialist and with Cheney and Rove kidnapped democracy. All those poor elected Senators and Congressmen without the powers of the Legislative Branch, all those poor judges stripped of their roles in the Judicial Branch. Spending a billion or more of public funds to build a stadium for a private enterprise that can then move the tenant with no recourse at the end of a relatively short lease is asinine. Someone made this comment on a call into Doug "I Only Write About Drunks In Town" Krikorian and he said, "why shouldn't public money be used for a stadium, they use my taxes for libraries I don't go to..." or some comment to that effect. <br><br>Re: #2 Brian: "Clippers" "professional team" ?

Re: LEST WE FORGET &#8230; | The District Weekly

So anyone who makes contributions to candidates for City Council are not able to participate in the democratic process or have business before the city? Better pull the plug on JetBlue (I know a lot of folks would like that), the public safety personnel, most of the commercial brokers who lease space to public officials/programs. Better check Feinstein and Boxer's contribution lists and determine who should not be having any business with the Federal government, also Dwight, you should make a list of Bonnie's contributors to ensure the state doesn't do any business with any of her donors. If the P-T has somewhat relevant site they could post many of the releases that drive their stories "live" perhaps creating buzz about the next day's paper for readers to want to read the full story. But that would be actually expanding their thinking of what their market is, what their competition is and what would drive eyeballs to the ink.<br><br>Much of the P-Ts, and other papers, demise is their inability to convert in the news/opinion delivery industry with the expansion and growth of the internet. <br><br>They are stuck because the have historical newspaper management and they need internet/new media mentality to drive people to the paper and sell subscriptions and therefore advertising. Thus local sites like The District Weekly, LBPost and LBReport with forward thinking management continue to grow and involve the community in news and opinion and the P-T withers away.<br><br>One more thing, Krikorian personifies the dinosaur nature of the paper and its irrelevance (sic).

Re: GORDON: CHAMBER USED ELLIS RECALL &#8216;TO RALLY THE TROOPS&#8217; | The District Weekly

John, "his union" consists of business owners, business managers and business people. From small businesses run out of living rooms to corporate giants like Boeing, they belong to The Chamber. They are far from tired of what Gordon has done for the business community and his relentless energy to fight anti-business legislation and environments (see many postings on this site for evidence as to what attitudes are). He cares about the students because they are the children of his membership and also the future employees of his membership or better yet in his view his future members as they matriculate and start their own companies. Unlike TALB which takes hundreds of thousands from its members every year, The Chamber donates and fund raises tens of thousands to be put back into the district. He is definitely a polarizing figure in our community--but the business community strongly backs him.<br><br>Whiner: Schipske also won with tens of thousands of dollars of support from TALB--for whom she still draws a paycheck.

Re: LETTERS: VOL. 2, ISSUE 5 | The District Weekly

Maybe Molina not that he's cut his teeth on the Long Beach Magazine and its triteness is ready to shoulder the challenge of a "real" publication and make a bid for the P-T. Your derogatory labelling of the Chamber begs the question, are you anti-business or just anti-Chamber which supports business? Do you work? At a private business? Is it a member of a Chamber of Commerce? The anti-business environment in this city and too many of its residents is incredible, especially since so many people do draw a paycheck from private businesses.<br><br>Andy I am not ignoring any aspect of that parcel and suggesting it has to be developed, if it is left alone so be it. In that same regard I am not ignorant of the fact that any time any development anywhere is proposed it is fought tooth and nail by a very vocal segment of our community. In your comments linked above you state "landowners should get a fair price for their property." Who determines what is a fair price? Does it include compensation for loss of revenue for not being able to develop it? <br><br>You state that "in this case public interest should trump private rights." By saying "in this case" are you saying except in this case you are against eminent domain--which is essentially public interest over private rights? What is your basis for extending public interest over private rights in some circumstances but not others? What if the public at large decided the better interest served was something with a parking lot because it meant there were businesses supporting jobs and tax revenue for the city? Is the loudest group with the best lawyers the arbiter of the best public interest? What if a referendum said, "Develop it?" Is that public interest or just misguided voters?<br><br>If the land owner is willing to sell the land at a "fair price" to the city or some entity that would prevent its development more power to them. But who is going to pony up the millions to buy it? Certainly not the city. Not any private entity unless they know there will be return on the investment. That leaves who? <br><br>In the end this parcel will sit for decades more as the tanks continue to decay and the seepage continues into the area as public interest in this case fights private rights in this case and vice versa. Status quo reigns supreme as the lawyers reap the retainers and fees.

Re: SLEUTH TO PSYCHO | The District Weekly

File a civil suit against the theif. Go to small claims and max out the amount you can file, I think it is $5000. She won't go to jail so she can stay home and have her kid, but she will have the judgement for a long, long time and won't be able to get much credit with it outstanding. You can always settle for less if she decides to pay anything. Make it big enough to get her attention and scare away any potential creditors; eventually she may come to you for the actual amount she stole and you can add in your cell minutes, etc and reach a settlement.

Re: SLEUTH TO PSYCHO | The District Weekly

We has two $2000 checks written against our account at WAMU on a Saturday and a Monday--days when anyone checking online would not see the transactions until late Monday or Tuesday morning, when I discovered the withdrawals. The perp used counter checks and had my driver's license number, no other ID. He/she got the number probably from my writing check in local retailer and them writing the number on my check--never since will I let anyone write down my license number. There were two and I presumed the same teller who was probably in on it since no photo ID was presented. I called the LBPD who took statement and assigned a case number which I took to WAMU. The almost immediately credited us with $4k back into our new account that we had to open. I assumed they would look at the video tapes and see if I recognized the thief, but that was it. Never heard from everyone. Since WAMU made us whole, with the exception of changing out a checking account which is a pain but minimal compared to the loss of money set for important home project, we were done. I followed up with the Detective assigned and branch manager once and figured they were not interested. I wondered how much we would have to lose, or WAMU in refunding the amount lost, before it hit the radar of being worthwhile to pursue the crook and prosecute. <br><br>Everyone can be a victim very easily, that does not make it the victim's fault for the evil acts of another simply because the let themselves be a target. I admire the efforts you took Jenny to track down the crook who stole from you and did not do the right thing. How nice that while she was withholding tax and mortgage payments she voted herself a nice tax break of $20-60,000 in legislation that changed tax code so that principal loan losses by lenders due to foreclosure no longer became taxable event for borrowers--in Richardson's case about $200,000 in loss to lender. Egypt builds a wall preventing Palestinians entering their country, do not supply any vital supplies, electricity, water--but turn a blind eye to smuggling arms into Gaza. Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, they all provide funds for arms and actual arms but refuse refugees, or those wanting to re-locate in their lands. Palestinians are cannon fodder in their fight to eliminate Israel and all Jews. Every truce, treaty, agreement that has been made has been broken by the Palestinians or Arab states, yet Israel continues to make them and then be shelled as those not signing the agreements send more funds and arms to those willing to kill Jews. <br><br>Julia, this site is mostly commented on by those a bit further to the left of you and I; don't expect much agreement for any of your sentiments as expressed. Better yet, get Hamas to quit state sponsored murder of Israeli citizens and recognize the state of Israel and its right to exist. Maybe then a path to peace would open and future Palestinians would benefit from what Hamas denies those under its rule now. Good to see some you still carry the same drum throughout the site, bang "Bush lied"; bang "Randy Gordon is a whore", bang "make every issue about Bush or Gordon". Your rythm section gets a bit dull when you drag it out for every issue. This is about a member of the U.S. Congress cheating people in her unabashed quest for power. Is there something in your DNA that prevents you from calling out Richardson just because she's Democrat? As long as those stats are clung to there will not be reconcilliation. Interesting that you acknowledge intifada--the terrorists breaking Arafat's "word" on peace and attacking Israel. What is more important to the Arabs, peace or land? Israel has given up land in accordance with agreements, only to be attacked. Arabs don't want peace, they want Israel gone and all the Jews as well. Intifada is about killing Jews not finding peace. Israel would like nothing more than peace and has time and again been betrayed by those who sign agreement after agreement.

Re: RACE AGAINST THE MACHINE | The District Weekly

And still because of the b.s. districting the arguments are only between two candidates that are pretty much indistinguishable because they are the only ones with the golden (D), guaranteed to get you elected in LB no matter your transgressions.

Re: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ISRAEL | The District Weekly

1979 Egypt-Israeli treaty and recongition. Jews should open their borders, disband their army, get on their knees and pray to "just get over it and take a loss for love" as the terrorists murder them and wipe out their people, their culture and their state. I get it, the Jews are expendable in your quest for peace so that the murders and terrorists of Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria, Iran, and on and on get what they want. <br><br>Until you understand that Israel wants peace and its enemies want the destruction of Israel you will never understand this conflict. In 1917, during WWI, Britain the "Balfour Declaration" promising a Jewish homeland in Palestine, shortly thereafter British take control of Jerusalem from Ottoman Empire. In 1947 after Britain turned the issue over to the U.N., the British territory of Palestine was partitioned into an Arab state and a Jewish state. An Arab blockade of Jerusalem started and attacks on Jews and Jewish settlement--almost all of which had existed for decades. In 1948 the Jewish government was formed and at that time an army was brought together out of militias form the different cities and settlements. 1948 was when the fighting started in earnest, virtually all Arab nations declared war on Israel and about mid-way through the year the Israel War for Independence started.<br><br>Palestine has been to the mid-East like Belgium to Europe, always under some other country or nation. Roman, Egyptians, finally the Ottomans. Until WW1 and the partition from the Ottoman Empire Jews and Arabs lived somewhat peacefully together. It was not until the U.N. resolution establishing Israel that the violence escalated. And it was not until the 1970's that the Palestinians engaged in terrorist acts outside of Israel, and obviously not until late '80s and early '90s that we became targets from non-Palestinian Arab/Muslim groups using Israel as their cause celebre initially to mask their desire for a worldwide Islamic caliphate. <br><br>Your last line is a head scratcher, for an Israeli there is no difference for if they do not "win" they know there is no peace as they will continue to be attacked and terrorized until there are no Jews or Israel, or both, left. They choose to defend themselves, if you wish to call this fighting then so be it, yes continue to fight against those who put bombs on children and send them into buses and markets, fight agains those who set up in schools and homes and use them as bases to fire rockets into Jewish homes and schools. <br><br>Ultimately the Jews were offered Israel by the U.N., why would they have said "no?" <br><br>I know none of this will matter to those who hate Israel or see some type of moral equivalence between defending against suicide bombers and the suiced bombers themselves. And because we cannot see eye to eye our expectation is that those living in the environment day after day will?

Re: RACE AGAINST THE MACHINE | The District Weekly

Andy is spot on in two ways: 1) thanks to the districting Lowenthal is almost a shoe in to win in the general 2) Joshie can move into Mommy's old residence and take over the seat.
